"Okay, 31," Autumn said, looking down at the unconscious guy she had found. "We gotta get you to the portal." They weren't that far from the portal, and she attempted to lift him up. "You're heavy." Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but for some reason she seemed to be weaker than usual. Oh well.

She'd just have to improvise!

Autumn grinned, and then lifted him up by his shoulders, dragging him on the ground. "Sorry about this, 31, but unless you're gonna wake up and walk with me, this is the best you're gonna get."

He didn't respond. "You're really out of it aren't you?" It didn't really bother Autumn to be talking to somebody who couldn't answer, though it'd be nice if he did. She was a bit curious about what had happened.

She pulled him a little farther, and then they were at the portal. "I'm really glad I didn't have to pull you farther." That would have been annoying. "Alright, let's get you through the portal." Nice and easy. She pushed him through, and then followed.

This was not where they were supposed to be.

This was a highway. Autumn looked around, seeing a skyscraper covered in vines, whose top seemed to have shattered. It was painful to look at, and so she looked away. She could feel shaking, and she turned.

That was one big horse thing. It was made of vines, and something else, something that she didn't think was fear. It was huge, and as it came closer, unraveled into vines, into claws, into fingers.

More tendrils unraveled from the creature, and in her head, she heard it speak. It is not natural for you to accept us?

The words hurt, and the images that followed made it worse. She could see flashes of people, thousands, people in fear, in anger, in despair, in hatred, in loathing. It hurt, and her knees buckled. It was only her bow that kept her from falling, and she patted it. "Thanks."

She forced herself up, grabbing Dylan and pulling him along with her. It was hard to run carrying him, and she shot at the vines that she couldn't escape from. They ran, and it chased.

While she would normally stop to fight, right now her mission was to rescue the human and get them to safety. This was not safety, and so she continued to run. Behind her, the city burst into vines, but she couldn't look back. She didn't have time for that.

Eventually they reached a clear stretch of highway, but it had no where for them to hide. The fog came back in, encasing them, and Autumn grabbed for her bow. It was oddly lifeless in her hand, and she looked around. There was no way she was going to be able to outrun the monster while carrying 31. He was getting heavy again.

She spotted a Jeep Wrangler off to the side of the road, and dragged Dylan over to it. The keys were still in the ignition. "Yes!" she exclaimed. She maneuvered the guy into the passenger seat, buckling the seat belt around him. This was going to make things a bit easier.

5 + 4 speed= 9 km

As she settled in to drive, her headset clicked on. Apparently a new portal had been set up 10 km straight down the highway. She just had to get there. "Hold onto your horses, 31!" She exclaimed. "This might get a bit crazy."

She shifted gears, and then pushed down on the gas. They were off like a shot, and in her review mirror, Autumn could see the vine beast chasing them. It was catching up, and one of its vines struck the back of the car, busting out the window and denting the back half. Good thing it wasn't her car.

(6 +4= 10 km)

She swerved the car, pressing down even farther. She could see the portal. It wasn't that much farther, and she pulled the car off to the side, parking it, and then taking the key. Just in case.

You never knew when you'd need a key.

"Let's try this again, 31," she said, unbuckling him and pulling him out of the car. She hadn't gotten more than a few steps closer to the portal when the man suddenly started to swing his fishing pole around, aiming it at her, and she cried out when it hit. "That stings."

She dodged out of the way of another hit. "Hey, hey. 31. You're fine. I've been sent to rescue you. We're a rescue party. Gonna get you someplace safe." He wasn't listening, and she used her bow to block his hits.

It didn't seem as if he had any weapons training, and she finally just slipped around him, and bashed him with her bow. It wasn't elegant, but it was effective. He was back on the ground, unconscious, but as she turned to drag him to the portal, she noticed it was gone.

"Really."

Of course it was gone. "You're not making this easy, 31. I'm just trying to do my job."
