Nothing. Not a thing.
Undying aside, the hospital was abandoned. Ryan was really beginning to think he wouldn't encounter any form of life here that wasn't already well... Hell, he wasn't even sure what to look for clue wise. He wasn't in Death division for a reason, and other than the weird vines growing everywhere, he didn't see anything out of the ordinary--and by ordinary, he meant Deus ordinary, which wasn't really ordinary at all. So as much as it burned him to have wasted all this while and produce no results, he was running low on time and would need to start making the trek back to the portal. In fact, he had made all the way to the edge of the parking lot when his boot collided with something soft and he stopped.
Immediately he looked down and though a number of different scenarios went through his head, he was surprised to find a human body. No wait, scratch that. Upon closer inspection, he noted the slow rise of the kid--err man's? chest and after checking his pulse, he could confirm that the pulse was not weak, but strong. Very much alive then.
"How the hell did you get all the way out here?" He wondered aloud, quickly taking inventory of the man's injuries. All of which turned out to be minor and could be treated back at base. It was kind of surprising, given the current state of him. The man gave no indication that he was going to wake any time soon. Which also meant that he was now going to have to carry him back. Great. At least he was roughly the same size as himself and lighter thankfully, which he could likely assume was due to lack of food. He could have really been unlucky and find a taller man like Dakota. Now that would have been proved to be impossible. With this guy, he was sure he could carry him a fair distance, even with his energy sapped as it was.
"Okay well, lets at least try and get you back and get you some medical attention, then." He said, hoisting the unconscious form of the human up onto his shoulder. "Locke, I'm going to keep you ready and waiting. I imagine we'll be having some kind of encounter between here and the portal."
:Roger that!: The chipper and somewhat obnoxious childlike voice chimed in. :Careful you don't poke holes in the guy's skin. I'd hate to see him bleed out.: In spite of that, Ryan was sure that Locke wouldn't care either way.
"Yeah, yeah, its not the first time I carried someone, while keeping you summoned, you know." He pointed out and got an amused sound for his effort.
It took a while, and required subduing the occasional undying creature, but eventually he made it back to the portal; stepping through with the unconscious man still over his shoulder.

The second Ryan stepped through the portal he noted that something was completely off.
This was not the base? Where was this? What the hell just happened? Had someone imputed the wrong coordinates? That was a pretty big damn mistake to make. Don't they double check this kind of s**t?
Before he could even attempt to contact anyone, the skyscraper beside him practically exploded. He turned to look, but immediately turned away with a curse. It hurt? That wasn't normal, what the hell was going on here? Where exactly did that portal drop him? The ground began to shake and Ryan immediately tensed, slowly lowering the unconscious civilian to the ground and preparing for battle. He didn't see anything yet, but judging by the way the ground was shaking it was going to be massive. Not good.Quote: More tendrils unravel from the cage of the creature and you hear something whisper in your head. It hurts, and nearly causes you to pass out.
It is not natural for you to accept us?
Images begin to flash in your head, and they are overwhelming. They show people, thousands of people each second in fear, anger, despair, hatred, loathing- the images flash even faster, and it hurts for you to even remain standing.
It is only the support of your weapon that causes you to regain semi-consciousness again as you force yourself as far away from the thing as possible. Just nearing it causes your head to pound horribly again. You feel a renewed power as you pick up the victim and begin to sprint out. Vines lash at you and you sever them with your weapon without much though. You run. It chases.
Now, after reading the above for this step, write a post in REACTION to what has happened in the entirety of STEP 2 for your RESCUER. You may now choose to continue to run (go to next step) OR stop a little to fight the boss. If you do, the boss has ???/??? HP. If your character (RESCUER) successfully does more than 10 damage to it (remember GUEST STUDENTS Have 2d6-6 dice and QUEST HUNTERS have 2d8-6 dice) you manage to repel it a little bit ICly and it gives your character a bit of a breather. This post should be the exclaim SECOND rp post in your thread! :Ryan watch out!:
Locke practically screeched in his ear as a massive creature appeared, leaking shadowy tendrils and shoving painful thoughts to his mind that stabbed like shards of glass.
It is not natural for you to accept us?
Ugh! He clutched at his head, gritting his teeth hard as the images flashed through his mind and was accompanied with what could only be described as the worst migraine imaginable. It was too much to bear.
:For Jack's sake, Ryan! Move it! Grab that human and let's get the hell outta here!:
Locke's shrill voice managed to cut through the pain, forcefully snapping Ryan to his senses and giving him just enough time to grab the civilian and run. But of course, as expected, it gave chase.
With little to lose and in spite of the human draped across his shoulders, Ryan spun around and with an almost feral snarl and swiped the creature hard against one of its limbs; shredding at the tendrils of darkness and causing it to briefly falter in its chase. That was his cue to run.

The skycraper exploded a second time, only this time it burst into thousands of vines. Ryan didn't dare to look back, instead he continued to run along the highway, glancing at each and every car as he passed them by.
There!
One still had keys stuck in the ignition. If he used this, he could put a lot more distance between him, that monster, and those damned vines. Certainly better odds than simply running and risking it catching up. He only hoped the car still had fuel.
:Where's the friggin roof? Ryan, this is broken! Find a different one, hurry!:
"Its a convertible." He corrected, leaning in to turn the key and sighing in relief as the engine purred to life. Though, judging by Locke's sound of confusion, Halloween must not have anything similar. After all, convertibles were quite popular in their world. Not that Ryan ever really saw the attraction to them. But right now, he'd take anything that worked and moved faster than his legs. So once he deposited his 'baggage' off into the passengers seat, he quickly slid back into the drivers seat, shifted into drive, and floored it.
Car: 2010 Mercedes-Benz convertible

Just as Ryan pulled out onto the highway, the monstrous horse like creature appeared again, striking the vehicle hard and hitting both him and his unconscious passenger. Fortunately, now that they were actually on road and not dirt, the distance between them and the creature was becoming larger and larger with each passing moment and they were fast losing it. As an afterthought he dragged his goggles down over his eyes, though was careful to watch the rear view mirror, in case this thing gained on them at all. Because, while they might be safe from this thing for the mean time, the fog was making it difficult to see.
Stupid convertible--why couldn't it have a roof so he could just seal the damn fog out?

At this point the creature was fast becoming a speck in his rear view mirror, with no signs of anything else like it on the way. He let out a shaky breath, and loosened the death grip he had on the steering wheel. The sooner he found that portal, the better.
Though he tried to keep watchful eye out, in search of the portal, he couldn't help it when his attention was drawn back to the road.
Was that...
Ryan squinted and gawked at what he saw.
What kind of idiot would ride a vespa in this situation? He was pretty sure he could run faster than one of those!
Needless to say, the convertible shot straight past the crazy vespa driver. Though not without a slight pang of guilt. He would have stopped but... with his luck the engine would cut and he'd be screwed either way.

Finally. FINALLY. There was the portal.
Ryan let out a long sigh of relief. However, just as he took a step towards the portal, the unconscious civilian, who had been slumped over his shoulder, woke up. At first, Ryan was surprised by the sudden movement and was about to ask them how they were feeling, when the little b*****d struck at him.
"Whoah-whoa-whoah! Hold on a sec, I'm trying to help you!" Ryan made to grab at the man's wrists and restrain him, but he little s**t was quick and twisted out of his grip, only to swing at him again. But if that wasn't shocking enough, the fact that he was strong, was. It was unnatural. No one who was just comatose should have that kind of strength, not so soon after waking up.
"Calm down already!" He bit out, finally seizing hold of the man's wrists, and pinning him to the ground. But it wasn't until the red head finally ceased their movements and slipped back into unconsciousness that he actually released his hold and checked him--again for his vitals.
That was seriously messed up. He would have to ask one of the doctors back at base to have a look at him and--
The portal was gone. When the hell did that happen?
"Oh shi--"
