I keep seeing these at game stores, and I have this nigh irresistible urge to buy a box and try them out. Only thing is I don't know anyone who's played them so I'm worried it's not gonna be fun or it'll be too money intensive for me to get into it.

Has anyone else played it yet or do you know someone who plays?
PostPosted: Wed Sep 30, 2015 12:46 pm

I haven't played and I don't know anyone who has so afraid I can't comment. I've gotten more into board games and table top recently though, so I'd be curious but yea wouldn't invest unless someone really sold me on it and/or I had people lined up to play.

We have friends that we meet up with for tabletop gaming night, but none of them have played it to my knowledge.
Since I've gotten into tabletop RPGs, I'm collect weird dice so I'd be lying if I said that wasn't one of the reasons that I want to buy them. But I also don't want to leave them sitting on a shelf if it's not fun to play. xD

Yea it's no fun having games you won't ever play. I was gifted a kind of story telling anime themed game for my birthday and I want to play it but barring my partner haven't found anyone interested, and it really wouldn't be interesting without at least 3 people. It's kind of like Cards Against Humanity, it's more like Snake Oil if you know that, but CAH is similar, but yea, requires a judge and would be no fun with just one player and one judge each round. I will play it one day, hopefully. xd

I did get DnD dice for my birthday as well though and I suppose if I was going to have something just sitting around dice would be the best thing as they can be kind of fun to display. My DnD group usually plays other games while we wait for people to show up (this is only my second night hosting so maybe I can trick people into playing tonight), so perhaps you could see if your tabletop group would be interested in giving it a go with you? Might be worth the investment if you definitely knew you had a few interested players.

That sounds like it'd be fun! I'm not familiar with Snake Oil, but if it's similar to CAH, it must be awesome. xD

That might be worth trying. We don't have anyone in our group that's interested in YGO, but I bet I could get them to play anyway. Most of them like to try new games regardless.

I did successfully get my DnD group to play the anime game (woo!) even though none are particularly into anime (you really don't need to be for the game though) so hopefully you shall be able to find some similar interest, or at least willingness to try. If you do get it and play it do let me know if it's worth looking into, particularly if non-fandom interested people also get any enjoyment out of it.

Awesome! Glad you got to play it then. biggrin
I have so many games sitting around my house 'cause I don't have anyone to play with. I end up bringing them with me when I go to visit my family. That's how desperate I am to play them. XD
(I say that because my family are the biggest bunch of sore losers you've ever seen. I think if we ever played Monopoly someone would be murdered It's that bad. ^^; )

What version of DnD do y'all play? :3
We used to have tabletop night every other weekend, but we've had to stop since our schedules don't work together anymore. We were playing Pathfinder though. :3

Yea I put off buying a lot of games because I worry I won't even get to play them, especially ones that require a good number of people to play. One of my favourite games is called the Great Dalmuti and while you can play it with 4 people it's better with at least 6-8. Another favourite is Avalon but it requires a minimum of 5. I also like Werewolf but that one you can at least play with a normal deck of cards (if you can remember what is assigned to what) so you don't have to invest in the specialty deck, though probably will at some point. I have an avid dislike of Monopoly unless it's Monopoly junior. This is because it just goes on too long and I just eventually get bored and stop caring. I sometimes like a long game but that's not one of them, I guess as it feels very samey every time, and yes people get super competitive about it. But yea even if I was in my country my mom is the only one who might play games unfortunately, although we may try to get my partner's parents to play some games next time as they are curious. They are lovely people but a bit highbrow academics and kind of look down on things they feel are juvenile. And can find they enjoy said things if they can be prompted to give them a chance, but we shall see. Atm there's a board game shop that hosts a game night every Monday so I've had the opportunity to try a lot of new games that way, and that's how my partner and I ended up meeting our current DnD DM and starting a new campaign.

We are currently playing the 5th version of DnD and it's my first time playing so I'm having a ton of fun as I've always wanted to play but everyone I know who does play it has always lived somewhere else. I think Kits was saying she likes Pathfinder, and my partner is curious about it but he hasn't played it either. Our group currently meets weekly and recently split into two groups as there was a core group and a lot of drop ins, so the drops in are going to be with an online group and the core group and a few people who want to be more core group will continue the in person game. Though the DM will be the same for both and the DM's sister will probably go back and forth. But yea, if any of the core people can't find a common date (as the days vary and thus far have never been weekends) and/or are too busy in a week we usually just skip the week. Other than about 3 weeks over summer when there were various vacations going on we have usually never skipped more than a week and have been pretty regular so hopefully that keeps up. Atm I think the thing I'll be saddest about in moving back to the US is leaving my DnD group behind if it's still going. But very motivated now to get a new one in that case.

I generally don't like Monopoly either because it makes people hate each other, but the fact that it's so slow and boring adds to it. xD;
I've never heard of those games, but I'll give them a search. Always looking for something new to try. Maybe we can invite the tabletop group for just board/card games day. ^^
One game that I want really badly is Betrayal at House on the Hill. It's way complicated, but it's a Lovecraft-style horror board game. It takes a long time to play a whole game, but it's so enjoyable that you don't even notice. I played it once when we had vidya game day with some friends. One of them is big into board games lately so he brought it over for us. Now I neeeeeeed it. @ u @

Oh, that's cool! Pathfinder is a revised version of DnD 3rd edition. The main reason we picked it is because it's cheaper than playing DnD. xD;
All of the rules and guides are available online through the publisher's website, and they support the bare-bones playing style that we like. We don't really use maps or figures. We have a blank hex map that we scribble on a little to show the battlefield, and most of us just use whatever is lying on the table as a player piece. xD
(I actually have a figure that I bought recently though. I haven't painted it yet, but it's really cool~ <3)
We tried to split our group up as well because it got too big for everyone to sit in our living room. Also, we had a player who was being rude that we had to kick from the game. He was supposed to be a friend, but he was trashing our house (On purpose!) and breaking things. We tried talking to him, but he threw a huge fit. Then he started making comments of a sexual nature about me so my hubby said enough was enough and kicked him out. xP
But in the end we didn't have to split our group because he was gone. xD;

Board game/card game day is definitely fun. Sorry if I'm repeating myself - I've been ill since Friday and my head is fuzzy - but I met my DnD group at a board game night and we usually start each session out with a casual game of something or other before we begin (sometimes while eating, other times because somebody is going to be an hour or two late) which is nice. Gives me a chance to play more games. No yuugioh dice still but I did buy Zombie Dice and Cthulu Dice on the weekend. I really like both games, and part of why I got them is that they work for two people so it's nice to have some games I can play when it's just me and my partner around. I especially recommend Cthulu Dice and it has modifications for two players to make it even more interesting.

I also really want to get Betrayal at House on the Hill! A friend (who is in CA and thus not local to me, nor would be if I was still living in CA as he's in the south and I'm from up north) posted about it about half a year ago and I've been curious ever since. My DM owns it but yea it'd probably have to come out on a non-DnD night as we are unlikely to have time for both. Definitely plan to get it myself at some point though as it looks and sounds really good.

A lot of people recommend pathfinder, might aim to try that at some point. Our DM likes to draw - he's no brilliant artist but serviceable - so we generally have his hand scratched maps and stuff as we play though he does have actual maps. We only ever use them though when he forgets his own, as he doesn't actually like them. I do miss some people (and/or characters) after the group split but it would have had to happen regardless of size, or else move online (and I'm enjoying the meeting/socialising aspects so don't really want to switch to online), as half the group are still in university and thus at the end of summer were off to other parts of the country. Actually, several of them go to my uni, but they are undergrads so actually have to be living there, whereas I am a PhD candidate and in write up so when my fiance got a job in Wales we moved. I'm glad we moved though, I really like Cardiff and generally only miss friends from where we used to live.

That sucks about someone purposely trashing your house though, who does that? My partner's friend who was visiting tends to accidentally break or make things messy a lot (no breaks luckily, some mess) as he's just a big and kind of klutzy guy, but he never does stuff on purpose. Sucks you had to put up with him but glad to hear he is gone, definitely sounds like he was no loss and nice that your group can carry on as is now. razz

Oooh, I'll definitely have to check out the Cthulhu game then! I'm all into that Lovecraftian lately. xD
But yeah, we'll do a quick card game or board game while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive as well. Usually Trivial Pursuit or something since I have the LOTR edition and our whole group is into LOTR. We can usually finish that in a half hour or so.

I bought Betrayal at House on the Hill yesterday though! There's a game shop not too far from where I live so I went by to pick it up. ;D
I spent the whole evening punching out the cardboard pieces and reading the instructions with my hub. It's such a complicated game. xD;

We had talked about doing our sessions online as well, but we all decided it was more fun to meet up for it. It getting increasingly difficult for us to meet though since everyone has jobs now, but none of them have a solid schedule to work with.

Yeah, even though he was a pain, we still felt bad cutting him out because he was friends with my husband since middle school. But honestly, he's not a very good friend. He's one of the types that takes and takes from a relationship, but never wants to give anything back.
On top of the breaking things and giving me a hard time, he wouldn't bring anything to our game night potluck dinners, but he'd eat twice the amount of anyone else in the group. (And half the time, he'd take the food, realize he couldn't eat it all, then throw half of it away.)
Sometimes we'd order pizza instead and everyone would pitch in a couple dollars to help with the food bill, but unless we called him out immediately, he would race everyone to the door when it was time to go so that he wouldn't have to contribute. It just became such a burden to have him over. @ o @

Yea it's a really simple and really cheap game. My fiancé and I combined it with our Warhammer figures so pretended they were the ones losing 'sanity' to Cthulhu which was great fun.

Yay Betrayal! As it's a bigger game I'll probably put that one off until I move back to the states. As I only have a year and a bit left in the UK I tend to try to keep purchases to small items and/or stuff I won't want to keep in a year as international shipping costs aren't fun. I do hope I'll get to play it before then though, guess I can prod my DM and ask for a Betrayal night as he has it.

Yea online sessions won't really solve the time problem, it just is an ideal work around for proximity differences. And it is definitely more fun to meet in person. Hopefully you guys can still figure out semi-regular meetings.

It does suck to have to end a friendship, especially a long standing one, but sometimes it has to be done when it's just not healthy for one or both parties. And he definitely didn't sound respectful. At the very least not a friend I'd want in my home. It's not that hard to bring a bag of crisps or at the very least if you don't have the cash for takeout forgo eating any. We've had drop in people who either forgot to pay (probably legitimately forgot) or didn't really contribute, but that's not okay regular behaviour. But maybe cutting him will encourage him to grow up. I have had one friend I fell out with that I later became friends with again, and in many ways while the falling out was hard it was good for both of us. If he wants friends he'll have to learn to give, maybe he'll be motivated, but if not, that's his problem.

I might have to check it out then! I'm always looking for some two player games so that I can play with my hubster. xD

Whew, yeah, I imagine shipping overseas can get real expensive real fast. Would be cool if you could get your GM to set up a game night for it though.
It takes at least 3 players so we're gonna have to get some of our friends to come over to play soon. Hopefully this weekend. biggrin

Yeah, that's how we finally decided to handle the situation. He did several other things besides what I named that made us finally decide to cut him out. We're hoping that once he matures a little we'll be able to invite back over, but no such luck so far. D;
PostPosted: Thu Oct 22, 2015 10:31 am

Yea the dice games are good b/c they are simple and can be group games but can also be played with just two people which is nice. I definitely do want more two player games as it is often Tom and I on our own, although I guess that's what video games are for. biggrin

Here is to hoping your old friend grows up a bit. FYI, my broadband provider decided to turn our internet off, for no reason. It was an accident and there aren't even notes to explain why or how the agent did it but even expedited it'll take 4-5 days to turn our service back on (from Monday, as it went out Friday but we couldn't get hold of them until Sunday due to being away). So hoping to have it back by tomorrow but we'll see. Tethering to my partners phone atm, he was away doing field work until today so I've been pretty isolated as I don't have a smartphone but I guess I focused on work a bit more than I might have. Really unhappy though as this is their mistake and they still seem to not be making the effort to fix it. When our current contract is up with them we will probably switch to someone else. Originally we thought a line was done and that's fine, we wouldn't be mad at them for things out of their control. But they did this so we think we are within our rights to be unhappy. Anyhow will stop ranting but that is my explanation for why I haven't been on and will likely be poof for a couple more days.

Oh, if you like card games too, I know a fun card game for 2-4 players. biggrin
It's called Boss Monster. Basically, the players play as the boss creatures in an old school RPG dungeon. You have to build a dungeon to entice heroes and kill them. Whoever kills the most heroes wins the game. It's really fun, especially when you have more people, but a 2 player game is nice for relaxing before bed or something. smile

Oh, that sucks! Hope y'all can get that sorted out soon. D:
Sounds like y'all are justified in being mad at them; that's really unprofessional of them to mess up like that and then take their time fixing their mistake. razz
