Witty Punching Bag

The inside of the hospital was about as dreary as she could have ever imagined. Destroyed walls, shattered glass, tattered curtains and drapes, leaks from the ceilings, and all other manner of disarray one might imagine could result from a sudden surprise apocalypse announcement. In TV shows and movies hospitals were usually among the first places to be attacked, so as she walked down the halls she kept this eerie thought in mind. It basically meant that she had to be careful, so she took cautious steps as she ventured further into the building.

Quote:
[ 21- 40 ] Your paranoia begins to build up even more. You begin to get angry as well, and your skin begins to itch sporadically. Sometimes, instead of just voices, you swear you see faces of familiar people in the distance. They always fade away when you stare directly at them.

OOC: SCENARIO 4
Scenario requirements: A phone begins to ring as you wander the inside of the hospital. At first you do not want to pick it up, but the noise persists. You wander multiple rooms, and there are multiple phones. Each one you pick is a voice from a person you recognize, begging you for help. Whenever you ask where they are, they hang up. The ringing continues, over and over. If you are RPing this with multiple people, all of you hear the ringing, coming from various phones. It is up to you when your character comes to the realization that the ringing is all in their heads, (or if they need other chars to help them realize so!)

When the event is over, add +10 infection to your character's infection meter.

Characters involved: Pomelo Ranier Antonelli

Extra effect: Players [ carrying a flashlight ] can shine it in dark places. Does additional +1 damage every time they hit a mob (including bosses) when they flash it at them. Also, if one person rolls a mob in a PRP/SOLO/ORP thread, nobody else in the thread has to roll for mobs. This post is applicable to ALL characters, flashlight or none.

It was quiet at first, or relatively so; she could hear her own footsteps echoing down the hallways. The sound was carried by the tile flooring, and paneled walls, and barren ceilings; then further amplified by the emptiness that engulfed the entirety of the building, which didn't help her rising anxiety as she continued walking despite everything in her brain telling her to turn tail and run the other way. Sprint, even. But no, she wouldn't. She couldn't. The fog was outside, and so were those voice...

But it's safer outside, right?

"No, it's not!" she cried out for the first time since she entered, her neck and shoulders tensing at the sudden response she gave to the voice that she could have sworn she heard. She froze in place, slowly looking around for the possible culprit. No one, and she cleared her throat and scratched at the sudden itch on her arm. She passed it off as nothing more than an itch from her anxiety and simply walked on.

Are you sure you want to keep going, Melon-pop?

She listened as the voices continued to echo, her father's voice prominent among them for the time being. Her shoulder twitched a bit while the itch in her arm simply got worse the further she walked. And for a while, out of boredom and curiosity, she started conversing with them. At first they responded reasonably enough, but as soon as her attention was pulled away by the sudden ringing of a phone they started becoming more...aggressive.

You're all infected!

Why bother with trying to survive?

Just go off and die, it's an inevitability!

It's your fault, all your fault, Mel!

Why didn't you save us?

"No. no, no, no!" she cried. They had once again caused fresh tears to streak down her face. She fell to her knees in a corner of the hallway and she shook her head violently until at last they left her. For the time being perhaps, but even though they were gone she could still hear the phone ringing.

"No, it's not true," she sobbed. "It's can't be true..." There was an ache in her chest as images of her family began flashing through her mind. The phone rang on as she gathered herself, and when she finally managed to get up again she began to search for its source in hopes that it wasn't a hallucination like everything else she seemed to be hearing.

The ringing echoed, much like her footsteps, but the further she got the louder it became which led her to believe that she was getting closer and closer to its source. It was perhaps four rooms down that she noticed that all of the phones in all of the rooms were ringing...so she walked into one of the rooms to pick it up.

"He--"

"Mel! Melon-pop, are you safe?" she heard the voice of her father on the other end of the line. She almost didn't know what to do, but when it finally clicked she practically yelled into the speaker.

"Daddy! Daddy, is that you?" she cried, the tears coming freely once again.

"Melon-pop, of course it's me! Answer me, are you safe?"

Her hands were shaking and the itch was back but she was smiling, wearily but she was smiling, as she held the phone to her ear. "Y-yeah, I'm alright. Where are you? Are mo--"

There was a click on the other line.

"D-daddy?" she started to say weakly, the smile fading immediately as she realized what happened. Slowly she set the receiver down, and almost as soon as she did the ringing started again, though she heard it coming from the other room this time, and she ran for it.

"Hello!" she cried into the receiver, hoping to hear another familiar voice.

"Mel, sweetie, are you okay?"

"Mom, quick! Before they hang up the phone, where are y--"

It clicked again, and she slammed the phone back into the receiver, prompting another phone to go off in the other room.

"Squirtle! You doin' okay?"

"Quince! Where a--"

Click.

SLAM. RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING.

Her footsteps echoed in her ears as she raced for the phone once again.

"Mirabelle?!"

"Melo-jello!"

It was this voice, this one voice, that caused her to break down into tears once more, and her knees finally buckled beneath her. She landed with a very audible thud but the pain didn't even register. She could hear the concern in her sister's voice over the phone as she tried to console her, but Mel continued to sob into the speaker.

"I could never abandon you, Mira," she said between breaths and hiccups. "Never, you hear me? I need you to know that..."

"I..."

"Mira, listen. Just tell me where you are and I'll come find you! All of you!"

Click.

She blinked and caused a few more tears to trail down her face as she heard the dial tone on the other line. With shaky hands replaced the phone on the receiver, but it didn't ring again, not this time. She didn't care, though. Mel focused her blue eyes on the wall directly across from her. Listless and despondent. They were gone...they had to be if they were haunting her like this. They were gone and she'd done nothing for them. She'd only saved herself, and for what?

They were all infected anyway, so what was the point?
