Quote:
You reach a long barricade of thorns on the other side of the wall. They seem to be moving, pulsating with a life of their own and gift out a strange light. Flowers begin to bloom on the wall. When you press your hand against one, you are immediately assaulted with a strange vision (roll 1d6 to see what it is).

1. You see a skyscraper. At the very top there is a greenhouse. You feel yourself hovering above the greenhouse before diving right into it. There is a beautiful garden inside it, almost like a biodome. In the center of the biodome is what looks like some sort of chalice

2. You see hundreds of dead bodies, and a strange feeling washes over you. Apathy. You stand over the bodies and continue searching for at least one survivor. You hear yourself speak. "Are humans really so fragile?"

3. You fight against humans, but this time they are armed. Their weapons hurt. You are frustrated. They are eligible, but none of them will truly accept your wisdom. You kill many without ever feeling accepted. The feeling continues until the vision is over.

4. You fight against creatures of shadows, what you would consider your own breathren. They come in all shapes and sizes, large beasts and dragons, demons and even the undead. They refuse your knowledge. They are not compatible. They beg, negotiate and even fight against you to stop. You assimilate them for their treachery and refusal to serve.

5. You sleep in a long chamber of vines. Inside it are rows and rows of crystals. Each one is important to you. You tap against one, and it resonates, and you feel a strange sense of satisfaction. This is the power you have collected from those living and dead.

6. [ There is no actual image in this vision. Instead, you are assaulted with hundreds, thousands of conflicting thoughts, emotions, and ideals, all of them not your character's own. Your actual character's nose begins to bleed, and they fall to the ground, convulsing. They are unable to roll any other visions from the above if they reach this prompt and eventually pass out ].

Otherwise, you may continue rolling until you have fulfilled the 250 word requirement for it!

When the event is over, add +10 infection to your character's infection meter

Every sign had pointed against going near them. Radio chatter, corkboard notices, hell, even her own common sense and intuition would have screamed their protest even without the other corroborating evidence. But there she was anyway, inching towards them with the sort of fatal curiosity that afflicted many humans, shaking slightly. The soft light they gave off was a lesser evil than the fog, surely; anything was better than having her own inner doubts pulled out in her own voice, parroted by some uncaring deity.

Like Briar Rose, she was compelled to p***k her finger on the thorns and fall into a deep sleep.

There was no logic to sleeping and moving: more than dreams and infinitely more than reality, Adelaide didn't question it. Curled amongst the vines, she felt content rather than afraid and full of dread, a better state than she had been able to achieve for over a month now. Going amongst the clusters, she noted the soft glints of crystals and glided her fingers across them, feeling each resonate with captured power. There was safety in knowing the multitudes that belonged to her, that both life and death could be joined together so beautifully.

It should have never come to this. Creatures large and small, magical and brute force, ongoing and undying even without a beating heart--this was supposed to be celebrated and acknowledged, not destroyed. But they did not understand. They were not eligible for her opportunities. There was always confusion and hostility to be found against an unknown such as herself, but it didn't mean she couldn't find it regrettable. Every life taken with a simple touch, vines wrestling every monster and demon and ghost and beyond into submission, pressed to their beings so that they might be preserved like flowers.

"Adelaide."

The voice came like a whisper in the wind. Soon enough, the decaying figure with one bright green eye lumbered on closer to the older woman.

"Your children have not joined my cause. Our cause. Both they and you will pay for this treachery," he rattled out, looming forth with a rifle in hand. Then, he charged straight for her.

She was jerked from her dream abruptly and nearly staggered back onto the thorns. Wild thoughts skittered across her mind: how long has she been out, what had those things been, why did her skin itch--

Boss. For a moment she thought his face, but the image faded quickly and was replaced with something far more monstrous. More fog tricks? It had to be. She couldn't possibly believe Boss would be so unlucky, so stupid to get himself killed and brought back as one of those things. Nonetheless, it chafed on her nerves to have to deal with him on top of the already present doubts swimming in her ******** right off, shadow," she growled as she wielded her candlestick, the only other source of light there beyond the creature's single green eye and the thorns. "My kids're just fine where they are." (But were they--)

After striking the Boss with the candlestick, Adelaide would feel something warm and wet roll down onto her hand. Blood.

He snarled, then lashed back with his bladed rifle.

"You dare strike back. TRAITOR! TRAITOR! TRAITOR!"

What...?

No. Illusions. The fog could make voices and dreams, why couldn't it replicate something as simple as blood too? All in her head. All in her goddamn crazy infected head.

"Yeah, that's how I know it's not you," Adelaide said with an irritated smile, one eye closing at the strike. Still, she was shaken, and it showed in the way she swung her makeshift weapon. "Being a giant v****a about it isn't his style."

"Fool."

His voice distorted as he spoke. It was all he said before reaching out to grab her by the throat.

A strangled yelp barely made it under that grasp, and for a moment there was true fear in Adelaide's limpid eyes. And then it was replaced by the instinct to fight back, coupled with adrenaline and traces of apology. (Because what if--)

She jammed one of the candlesticks in the creature's remaining eyes with a desperate thrust.

The Boss howled and recoiled back, dropping Adelaide. Clutching his face, he fell quickly vanished back into the fog.

She nearly dropped her weapon when she herself was dropped. Not one part of her felt bad now; she was irritated frankly that this had to happen on top of everything else--and while the dream had been rather peaceful to boot! (And strange that sucking up dragons and s**t was now her new definition of peaceful. What a life.)

Taking a breath, she rubbed at her neck and let herself take a break on the floor until it stopped throbbing.
