J'nes

After watching the Touching and seeing Janel’s reactions to the eggs, J'nes rather was eager to talk to his son about his impressions of the clutch. Though finding a time took a bit of thinking, since as a Candidate preparing for a Hatching, Janel would be busy most of the time. But everyone got time off for dinner. So he sent one of his flits to the boy with a message to meet him at the dining hall when he got his break for the evening meal. J’nes even went to the kitchens and tried to wheedle some kind of sweet from them as a treat for his son. There were unfortunately no bubbly pies baking, but he did manage to snag a few sweetrolls, which he rolled up in a napkin.

He opted not to get real food yet, and instead sat himself at a table by the door where he'd be able to keep an eye out for his son. Then he waited. The smell of food and the knowledge that the sweet rolls were right there was tempting, but he’d rather eat with Janel than eat early, then sit there grilling the boy while he was trying to eat. That just seemed inconvenient and uncomfortable, and he’d rather keep this a pleasant experience. So he sat back, folded his legs and stared at the door, one foot jiggling eagerly.

Janel

Not long after the Candidates had left the Hatching Grounds after the Touching, Janel found a gold flit swooping up to perch on his shoulder. He’d been around the flit all his life, so he immediately recognized his father’s flit. “Hey, Dana,” he greeted the little queen. He wouldn’t be able to let her hang around if he was in a lesson or anything, but since he was just walking from one place to another, she should be fine there for a bit. He reached up to scratch the little queen along her eye ridges, and she leaned into his finger and crooned in pleasure. Then she held out a foreleg to him, and Janel saw she had a piece of paper tied there. “A note from Dad?” he guessed as he carefully untied it. Dana only chirped at him.

He unrolled the paper to find it said: “Hi, Janel. Interesting clutch, isn’t it? I’d love to hear what you think of it. Want to meet me at dinner? Love, Dad”

Janel didn’t have anything with him to write, so he just handed the paper back to Dana. “Tell him yes,” he told her. She was a smart flit, she could nod to her owner to say Janel agreed. She chirped, nuzzled his cheek and flew off.

The day continued as usual, with chores and lessons that felt more like busywork, this close to the Hatching. When the time for the dinner break finally came, he headed into the dining hall, but he paused by the door so he could look around for his father.
