He was determined to find her, October sweeping the room with his umbrella clutched at his side, bandanna pulled fully up over the lower half of his face. He felt better without his expression being fully visible, most of the time keeping it tugged up and his glasses securely over his eyes so that most of the time his face was almost entirely hidden. A defense mechanism, perhaps, but it was what he could hold onto, at least.

He still couldn't find her, so he made rounds around the poker tables, trying to catch sight of her familiar red hair.

Having finally secured enough coin for bother her and her faction leader, Brie was taking a small break, sitting underneath one of the currently unused tables, quietly and tiredly munching away on her left over bag of chips. With the rumors of this place and its food, she wouldn't dare trying to eat anything else, than what she brought with her.

Unfortunately for October, she didn't realize she was being searched for, but if he came by the table she was under, he just might hear the faint sound of chips crunching.

He slowed to a stop beside a table, strange - and familiar - sounds echoing out from underneath it. October frowned, debated internally, and then realized just what the sounds were with a click of recognition in his brain. It could have been anyone, really, under the table, but he could hazard a guess just on instinct.

He crouched down and gave the occupant a Look.

"Brie."

Practically in a daze, Brie slowly blinked at October when he found her. "October!" Chip still in hand, she nearly dropped it, snapping to full attention when noticing the collar around his neck had been removed. "They removed it!" For all their tricks and lies, she was glad to know that they at least kept their word on this. With October being one of the faction leads, she was afraid they might go back on their word, just so they could fetch a price with his status alone.

Anything that was in her hands were dropped, as she was now leaning forward, feeling around his neck as if to be doubly sure the collar wasn't there, and not hidden under the bandana and other clothes he wore.

Her relief at knowing the collar had been removed shouldn't have made him feel worse, but it did, because October had the sinking suspicion that he knew how and why the collar had been removed in the first place. They hadn't said anything - he'd been a little drowsy when they'd told him he was bought - but he knew, anyway, or at least, thought he knew.

His hand rose and caught her wrist, the expression on October's face half hidden behind all of his gear.

"Did you do this?" he asked, meaning the collar. "It was you, wasn't it?"

Pleased to find no collar, even after he quick search, she paused when he caught her by the wrist, taking a moment to just stare. It was always difficult to tell what October was thinking, especially when he had his face covered as much as he did. Was he mad?

"Yes." She answered, not at all ashamed for what she had done.

He let go of her wrist and sat back, smacking his head on the underside of the table. With a groan, October eased himself onto the floor in front of Brie, legs crossed and one hand rising to rub at his temple.

"You shouldn't have done that," he said at last. "I was going to figure something out."

Wincing when October bumped his head on the table, she reached over to rub his head as he sat down in front of her. She had bumped her own head on a table earlier. She knew how much that hurt.

At his words though, she gave him a look, a little more serious now. "No, you wouldn't have. I know you. You would have gave every last coin you had to save everyone else. You would sacrifice yourself if it meant giving another person a shot at life." She shook her head, upset with the idea of it. "I'm sorry, but I'm not giving you that option."

His gaze flicked to hers, almost sullen in what little was visible of his expression. Brie had a knack for reading him strangely well, even though he didn't show that much in general. But then, she'd always been that way, since he'd first met her; intuitive in a sense that meant she could pick up on his emotions when he tried to pretend they didn't exist in the first place.

"I wouldn't have...done that," October protested, voice a little muffled, except this was a lie. His shoulders drooped somewhat, fingers toying with the laces of his boot. He was silent for a moment, and then eased out a breath.

"I wanted everyone to get out safely, regardless of what it took," he said quietly. "Is that such a bad idea?"

Frowning, she dropped her hand to rest on her lap, sucking in a small breath when his actions confirmed her suspicions. No. What he planned was not bad. It was extremely noble of him, in fact. But it was also something she just couldn't allow. Something she WOULDN'T allow. If it wasn't for October, she would never had made it to their faction, and likely wouldn't be alive. Whether he knew it or not, Brie came to depend on him a lot.

"It.. it is if we lose you." Head bowed, her fist clenched and unclenched. "I don't want to think of what would happen if- I can't. I only have a few people I care about left in this world. I can't lose you too."

His gaze cut across to her, half hidden behind the glimmer of his glasses lenses. October didn't want to think about what would happen, not to him, but to Brie and the others, to the people he'd started thinking of as more than just casual acquaintances.

"You weren't supposed to buy me first," he said, sounding a mixture of irritated and subdued. "That's not how it works."

A sigh ebbed out of him. "Captain goes down with the ship, right?" said October, and gave her a wan smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Shaking her head, her frown eased into a small smile. "It doesn't matter. I got mine off too. What's done is done, there's no use changing that now. If you feel like it, you can give me extra work duty as a punishment when we get back to the apartments." Even if October was upset with her, she didn't regret it. He was safe now. That's all that mattered.

"Well, I guess it's a good thing we're not on a ship then. No, we still need you, October. You're a huge part of what keeps us all going. We would be lost without you. I know I would."

October glanced suspiciously at Brie's neck, even though he had seen the lack of a collar before now. He half expected it to suddenly appear again, or that she'd hidden it just to make it seem like she was safe when she actually wasn't.

"You'll have to clean all of the toilets when we get back," October mumbled, but they both knew he didn't mean it. He ran a hand through his hair, but Brie's last comment made him lift his head. His fingers dropped into his lap and he stared at her for a few seconds, expression inscrutable.

"You'd be fine without me, Brie," October said quietly. "You wouldn't be lost, you'd be strong."

Okay, when she meant extra work duty, she didn't mean the worst duty. Groaning at the mere thought, the girl nodded, accepting her punishment. "Okay, fine. But I'm taking a long shower afterwards. Those toilets are disgusting." For an apocalypse, they were relatively clean. Before the apocalypse..not so much.

"So you say, but I don't think so. So you better be around for a long time to help keep me out of trouble!" She grinned, poking him lightly on the forehead.
