Winnifred Opal loved casinos. She really, truly did.
They were a wonder in society. So bright, so flashy. So many dreams and hopes. They were simply amazing.
So. When someone suggested going to the new casino Winnifred Opal was not about to turn it down.

It was very much like every casino she'd ever known. Bright lights, loud noises, people milling about. The sound of coins jangling in the air, the smell of smoke and and the flashing lights was almost enough to be overwhelming. It wasn't though, not quite. If only because Opal was an old hat at casinos.
She liked to gamble. It was fun, as long as nothing too valuable was on the line. A bit of cash, a few drinks, and other such little things. Never too much. The key was knowing when to walk away.
"Oh! Hello!" She greeted the attendant warmly. "Free coins? Marvelous! Thank you!" She'd always loved the little perks that casinos gave away.
She knew just what to do with these coins, too.
To the slots!

"Ha! That first one was a winner! Let's try another!"
There was something Winnifred Opal had always loved about slots. Maybe it was the lights. Maybe it was the randomness (though how random was up for debate). It didn't matter. She'd always loved slots. So, she tried again.

"Ha! Just like I remember!"
Winnifred Opal paused. That was right. Casinos shouldn't exist anymore. Between the electricity and the money...there was no reason for it to exist. None.
"How is this even possible? Am I dreaming?"
Just to see if she was, she pulled the lever again.

Winnifred Opal almost gave the slot machine another try. But the fact that she'd remembered there shouldn't be a casino at all was starting to eat at her. How was it here? Who built it? Why? There were hardly any people here anymore. They'd never make any amount of money. There was no reason for this place to exist.
So she turned away from the slot machine. She turned away and noticed the first wave of dizziness. "Hm?" Another step sent her head spinning. "What?" She registered that she was falling as the darkness closed in.
When she woke up again, the wave of panic that filled her was almost too much. She wasn't too old, but she thought her heart my give out. It didn't make any sense. They were captives...slaves? They had to be bought? What?
Winnifred Opal had a question.

A price? What? Things were happening too fast, and Winnifred was having trouble keeping up.
But she understood one thing. She had the option to save someone. She could save them. Give them a chance. She looked from one terrified face to the other. She thought. She cried a little, and thought some more.
She chose the boy. A younger life, so full of chance and promise. It made the most sense to Opal's soft heart.
Winnifred Opal began to cry as the woman was dragged away, screaming. Opal watched, terrified. What had she just condemned her to?
She didn't see the man start to run, but she did turn her head just in time to see him fall, bloody. WHAT?
It wasn't real. It couldn't be. It had to be a dream. This whole place. It...it...didn't make any sense.

They let her out back onto the casino floor. Winnifred Opal simply stood there, stunned.
