Letting out an exasperated grunt, Lola began to scrummage around the prison's kitchen, searching for anything edible that she could use in her new concoction. She knew Al had not had a hand in this assignment - poor man had experienced her cooking skills on more than one occasion. Okay, maybe five occasions. She wasn't much of a cooker, she was more of a TV-dinner-reheater.
A few boxes of grains emerged, as well as a can of baked beans. In one of the drawers, there was a handful of pasta scattered around. She took a few minutes to scrape the pieces from the bottom of the drawer and plopped them on the counter with the rest of the mess.
What the hell was she going to do with...this.
Finding a pot, she stuck it on the stove. Adding a little bit of water (as that's all that was allowed), she stuck the ingredients together in the pot. Hopefully the juices from the beans would help soften the rest...God only knew how this disaster would taste. Maybe they wouldn't let her do Kitchen Duty after this.
That was, at least, a nice silver lining to think about.

After ten or so minutes of stirring (and praying, let's be honest), she turned off the stove and stared at the pot. Should...should she drain it? But then it'd lose its sweet flavor from the baked beans...right? Or would the bean juice even be sweet any more, God knows how long that can of beans had been sitting down there.
A few minutes of internal debating resulted in the decision to not drain her experiment. Instead, she dished it out into a large bowl that she found, along with a handful of smaller bowls and spoons. Well, the zombie apocalypse was the last of their worries: Lola's cooking should be first on the DANGER priority list.
Taking a spoon, she dipped it in the bowl and drew out a mouthful. Closing her eyes, she quickly drew the spoon to her mouth (before she lost her moment of bravery) and tasted the concoction.
Hey....this s**t wasn't too bad! This stuff might be edible after all!
It was early in the morning, hours before the sun was due to rise. She'd woken up and couldn't go back to sleep (possibly because of the fact she was attempting to sleep on a prison cot for a single person alongside a 200+ pound man?).
Feeling good about the previous evening's successful meal, she'd decided to take it upon herself to make breakfast for those willing to test another one of her kitchen creations.
Rummaging through the cabinets, the search was on for her next set of ingredients. She knew where the baked beans were - two cans, even! Score!
Digging around through the barren cabinet, a single ghost pepper was spotted. Dare she?
Of course she dare. Al liked a good kick in his meal - this would surely wake him and everyone else up!
Leftover grains were the finishing touch for her experimenting and then she set to work. Grinding the pepper and grains, she slowly stirred them in with the baked beans as they cooked on the stove, then put the entire thing and popped it in the oven, after sprinkling the remains of the grain on the top to give it a crusty coating.
Now it was time to wait.

She gave the breakfast bean casserole about thirty minutes to cook, hoping the bean juices absorbed well with the grains. The coating on top had browned enough - enough for her opinion, at least - so she grabbed her pot holders and pulled the dish out.
Letting it cool for a minute, she collected her dishes and forks in the meantime. The smell was...interesting, at best, but the appearance seemed at least adequate enough to eat.
Cutting out a small square, she gingerly dug her fork into the piece and lifted it up to her lips. She could feel the heat as it neared, so gave it a soft blow before taking a small nibble.
Hmmm...interesting. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't amazing either.
Tolerable, at least. Edible? It would do.
She miiiiight not reveal the ghost pepper part, though. At least, not until after they ate it!
The evening was late and Lola was feeling antsy. Pacing jail cells was nice and all (not), but she needed something to distract herself.
Having found Kitchen Duty to be rather fun as of late, she decided she'd sneak into the prison's kitchen and whip up something different for a late night snack should anyone be brave enough to be interested in one of Lola's "meals".
The back of one of the drawers held another precious, tiny ghost pepper. She plucked it out and chopped it into tiny bits. Setting aside the pepper bits, the short woman collected what remaining grains she could find and began to boil them. That should be something like noodles...right? Maybe? Sort of?
While she waited for the grains to soften, she ran across a bottle in the bottom of the pantry. Interesting didn't even begin to describe the contents of the bottle - black, oozing, intriguing.
Well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
Pouring it in with the grains, she stirred the pot, adding the sliced ghost pepper with a dash of black pepper for seasoning. Whatever this mixture was, spicy was definitely going to be in the description!

Leaning over the pot, the fumes from the peppers forced her eyes to water. Whatever this was, it was strong.
What was she going to call it? Pepper Goop? It Came From the Black Ooze? Spicy Mystery? Ghost Glob?
The consistency was questionable, the black liquid of mysteriousness having made the grains very thick. The pepper smell was distinct, she could only imagine how the taste would turn out.
Dipping her spoon into the pot, she raised it up and gave it a small lick. The pepper was strong - almost immediate - but whatever the black junk was, it surely made up for the spice, balancing it out both strangely and deliciously. Why, this wasn't bad at all!
In fact, for what materials she ended up having to use, it turned out to be a pretty fantastic late night meal!
Everyone that had dared to try her Pepper Goop had loved it. She had even frozen some of it with the intentions of trying it out in a hard form. But for now, she needed to prepare for today's course.
She had been assigned the task of coming up with a lunch for those hungry enough for prison food (scrapings, more). She still had leftovers of the mysterious black liquid, as we as having discovered an additional bottle shoved away in the dark, damp corner of the no-longer-very-cold walk in freezer.
Lola still had no clue what the liquid was, but she DID know that it went well with pepper. So making her soup based mainly from the mysterious black liquid, she once again chopped up a ghost pepper and sprinkled it in as the goop boiled.
Breaking apart strands of grain for texture effect, she decided to let it sit and stew for nearly half an hour this time.

The smell was horrendous.
It was more of a stench than a smell. The black liquid had clearly been boiling for far too long by the time she'd come back to check it. The consistency was that of sludge, almost tar-like as the bubbles slowly rose up, popping and sending tiny, burning flecks of sauce across the sides of the pot and up into the air.
She dipped a spoon into the goop, wincing as a black bubble popped and hit her with sludge remnants. The burn singed her skin and she let out a small squeak, but it did not deter her from her taste testing mission. Bringing the spoon up to her lips, she hesitated.
Should she? Really?
Taking a deep breath, she gulped it down. It oozed its way down her throat, forcing her to immediately gag. If the smell wasn't bad enough, the taste was unspeakable.
Once the actual taste hit her tongue, it immediately rose back up, the short woman beginning to hurl the contents of her stomach out onto the kitchen floor.
Well.
Looks as though there wasn't going to be a lunch today after all!
After yesterday's disastrous escapade in the kitchen with the black goop of goopiness, Lola was determined to redeem herself and her budding kitchen skills by creating another Masterpiece by Mistake.
Black Liquid was the first to be set out on the table. She knew better than to use too much of it and cook it for too long - that was her mistake, yesterday.
Pepper came next. She decided to go with black pepper this time instead of ghost pepper, since the extra spice had burned excruciatingly bad when returning up her throat, yesterday. Yuck. Black pepper still gave it a kick, but not enough kick to send her cleaning up after her own vomit.
Dried pasta, check. She put it in the pan, along with the black liquid, and turned on the stove. She was mindful, this time, to ensure she did not leave it on for too long - the fresh chef wasn't about to overcook her meal again. Several minutes down the line, she added the pepper to the mixture and stirred.
It needed something else, though, and she thought for a moment while going over her options (and, her kitchen drawers). Stumbling across a bag of sugar seemed like a small victory and she scooped up several spoons and stirred them in with the pepper goo. The smell wasn't nearly as bad as it was yesterday - maybe this time, it'd actually be edible?
And this time, she wasn't going to vomit as a result.

She left it to boil for about fifteen minutes. The smell hadn't grown overly abundant in its stench as it had the day prior, but it also did not smell terribly sweet, despite the copious amounts of sugar she'd added to the pot.
The consistency was of a soupy pasta, the noodles having had time to soften and grow limp in the black liquid. The pepper and the sugar were surely adding their own spice to the mix, but was it a good mix?
No. No it wasn't.
This time she was able to make it to the actual bathroom, to vomit, the sugar having caked with the black liquid, creating a hard sludge that struggled to make it down her throat. A single pasta noodle dangled from the sludge, triggering her throat to up-heave everything she'd consumed.
If at first you don't succeed....maybe you shouldn't try again.
This was it. Today would be the day. She'd worked so hard in the kitchen for the past month, slaving away with the various tasks and putting her creativity to test with her experimenting and mixing and baking.
Today she would create the perfect masterpiece.
Pulling out two cans of baked beans from off of the shelf, she turned to the spice rack (which was pitifully empty, for the most part) and plucked off the salt shaker.
There was another ingredient she intended to use, one she'd been saving for such a special day.
Out of the corner of the closet, she dusted away the bags of flour that she'd positioned over the bag, effectively hiding it. There, sitting, waiting, expectingly, lay the bag of peas and corn.
Actual. Food.
Stirring the baked beans in one pot, she pulled out an additional pot for the corn and peas. Adding water, she began to boil the vegetables, adding pinches of salt here and there for flavoring.
Al would be so proud. Boss would be so proud.
Everyone was going to be so proud.

She continued adding salt out of habit. Like some of those old cooking shows that she used to marathon - what were they... Chopped? Cutthroat Kitchen? Anyways, she'd seen in many of those where chefs were afraid to use salt and got dinged for not using enough.
She wasn't going to make that mistake.
Dishing out the corn, pea and baked beans onto the chipped, worn plates that still remained in the kitchen cabinets, Lola prepared to serve lunch with a smile on her face. It didn't occur to her until the moment she was about to ring the dinner bell that she should probably taste her new masterpiece.
Pausing, she bent over and gingerly took a piece of corn and a piece of pea with one fork. The smell was delicious - much better than the black liquid fiasco from the other day. The taste?
Sliding it into her mouth, she was prepared to emit a happy mmmm, but it never came. Eh. It was alright, she guessed.
