Rubbing at the skin around his neck where the collar used to sit, Mia winced as he scanned over the crowds and frowned, not sure if he saw his partner in crime or not. Or rather, partner, off and on. He found that he missed Third, even though their relationship wasn't really solid to begin with. It never had been. It had never needed to be.
Mia wasn't really worried, but he was worried. Third usually got out of every mess he got into, but this was different. A Dante's levels-of-hell kind of different.
Pursing his lips and tapping his foot, the blond crossed his arms and clenched his eyes shut, willing his stupid endless non-quiet mind to kindly shut the ******** up. He didn't want to imagine the endless scenarios that Third might have ended up in - he had to concentrate instead of focusing on the what-ifs if Third couldn't pay himself off. Mia had already been paid off by an anonymous benefactor, of which he wished to thank, but he had no idea who it even was.
No. He firmly shut down his mind and walked into the crowd, taking a breath and feeling like he was jumping into a pit full of piranhas.
He still saw that a few people still wore collars, but there were a lot less people in general around than when he'd first gotten here.
The question was... was it worth it, buying Third? He knew Third would be angry, but...
Yes. The lives of his friends were always worth the risk. Unfortunately, he only had one. Friend, that is.
He was certain in his mind, now. He would buy off Third and... quietly accept his damned fate, whatever was in store for him. Third would most likely be unhappy, but it was his choice, wasn't it?
He'd have to find out just how much Third was tallied up, worth wise.

Third was NOT all right.
There was an almost zombie-like quality to him as he meandered his way through the crowds, jostling almost numbly against the occasional passer-by. He wasn’t even trying to steal anything off of anyone, despite the bouquet of opportunity presented to him. After all, everyone here was tense…though, he thought distantly, nicking someone’s wallet might make him feel better, a touch more like his old, pre-apocalypse self.
About the time that he was feeling sorry for himself, trying to suss out the most efficient way to get this bedamned collar off his neck, he was distracted (blessedly), by a splash of unkempt blond hair.
Third transformed.
He grinned widely, pushing past people to grab Mia and hug the dickens out of him, mingling golden and chestnut strands with a whoop of delight. “Oh man oh MAN am I glad to see you!” Crowing happily, now that he had something else to focus on other than the situation at hand. A rush of relief soared through the tall brunette, as having his friend solidly clasped to him was a fine reassurance, as anxiety had played havoc in the back corridors of Third’s mind that his friend had gotten himself killed, or worse eaten.
Will shuddered just thinking about it. Ugh. He didn’t know if they were feeding zombies back there or feeding themselves, but that latter stuck in his noggin’ with rather voracious tenacity.
Drawing back a bit so that he could look his companion in the eyes, Third’s smile stuck around, “How’s it been?” The words, however, held a more serious tonality. He’d no idea how much Mia knew about what was going on in this place, other than the obvious.
He noted, with another rush of satisfaction, that the conspicuous collar was missing from his friend’s throat. ’Oh thank sweet baby bagel Jesus…’ Somehow his comrade had managed to look out for himself, a miracle, but then again, Mia often had this way of surprising him. It was one of the several reasons that the thief found the other man rather endearing.

Mia looked... very quiet, and very sane at the moment, though his eyes were beyond haunted - far more than they usually were.
He got right to the point.
"How much are you worth?" Concern was in his eyes as he stared at Third, both hands resting on the other's shoulders in a very familiar gesture. The blond reached over and traced a finger over the collar, reading the number on it.
"A hundred and five." Lips curving downward, the blond sighed and hugged Third again, closing his eyes for the briefest of moments.
"I'm going to get us some water. Stay here." He left, other things on his mind as he glanced to the sides, the tick of his still there, but... he was a lot more focused.
Most likely due to the chaos inside the casino.

There was something very worrisome about Mia, Third mused. Especially when he wasn’t going off on one of his tangents. It was both a blessing and a bane, to see his friend looking this…lucid, considering the state of things.
When Mia didn’t answer his question, the thief frowned slightly, concern burning deep into his eyes as he studied the blond male opposite. Not that Third’s comrade didn’t tend to be a worrywart, he most certainly did, but at least in this scenario…worry was possibly the most mild reaction one could have to this fiasco. “Hey whoa…” It was soft, as though trying to soothe, “You gonna…”
But there was no deterring the other, it seemed, “Uhm…water sounds good actually, yeah…” Though there was a note of suspicion in the brunette’s tone. At least Mia was already in the clear, so rash decisions hopefully couldn’t wind up too catastrophic.
As the other walked away, Third cupped hands around his mouth, “DON’T DO ANYTHING I WOULDN”T DO!”
For once that seemed like sound advice.

It wasn't long before Mia returned, give or take five or so minutes. He actually scrounged up a bit of water, handing it over to the other, looking completely relieved and not uptight like he'd looked just a few minutes ago.
Mia looked relaxed now, as he stared at Third.
"You... should be able to remove your collar now." He downed all of his water, tossing the cup in the garbage as he went back to staring at Third, that content look still on his face.
"I paid your fee. You're free." This was a far bit different feeling than jail, and Mia was more than happy that he was actually able to do something that Third wasn't. He didn't feel resourceful in the least - he just did what needed to be done, and he needed Third to help him stay sane. Third was one of few things that actually kept him sane.
"It's... good to see you. I am relieved. So very relieved." His hand twitched again, fingers rubbing against each other as he started to babble again, unable to help himself. He was definitely relaxed, but they were still in the casino and he definitely wanted out.
"I don't want to be here anymore Third. Some people are still here, like other jailbirds like us, but there are some who've just disappeared and I don't know where they've gone and I don't think I want to know and I don't think they're feeding them to the undying but I can't think of anything else they'd be using them for other than to sate the undying so they don't bother the casino?"
Mia took a breath, huffing, his face turning red.

Oh.
Third rather woodenly reached out to take the water that Mia offered him, sipping at it as his eyes widened a touch as the other man continued. “I…you…” There was a part of him that rose up, angry and belligerent that his friend had spent coin on him, more wrathful still that Third hadn’t been independent enough in this to buy his own way out…and then there was also a profound sense of relief that he wasn’t going to get his a** killed in the most obvious fashion.
He sighed as his hand went to the device at his throat…and he almost started, alarm at the click that it made as it came free. But then it was sitting there harmlessly in his palm, and Third shook his head, a wry grin coming over handsome features. “I should kick your a**.” There was no force to the threat, “And I would if you’d done this before taking care of your own.” That statement was a bit more grim, eyes leveling at his friend knowingly, “But as it stands, I could bloody well kiss you. So. You didn’t have to, but thanks.” That last was breathed out a touch shakily, as he dropped the collar and then edged a couple of steps away from it. How about nope.
Reaching over, long fingers encircled the blond’s spasming ones, cupping Mia’s hands in his own, trying to calm the tremors. “Hey…I’m happy to see you too.”
The brunette shivered, grimacing openly as he remembered his initiation experience…and he waited for his companion’s rant to come to an end before interjecting his own opinion. “Well first off, I don’t think that plan would actually work. Second off…considering what I’ve seen already…” His voice dipped, and he looked around as though insuring that no one would overhear him, “Mia we’ve got to be ******** careful because I’m pretty damn sure this situation has gone Hannibal on a grand scale, ok?”
Just the thought of it made his stomach churn uneasily.

"Yes. Good. Me too." Mia blinked. "Well... I would have. But someone else paid for me." He breathed in and lowered his head.
"Oh." That explained a lot. "So... no eating the food here. Food is bad." He reached into his large pack and felt the potato he'd found earlier, giving a sad smile. "Good thing I have a potato if I get hungry." Squeezing Third's hand gently, he leaned forward and pressed his forehead against Third's, his voice serious.
"To be honest... I would have paid for you and not worried about myself. I'm useless compared to you. You have so much more going for you and I just have so many problems and I just scare people away with my ramblings when you've dealt with it and had so much patience and I don't understand why." Mia's eyes were glossy, but he refused to cry, even though his voice was wavering, bordering on cracking. "If someone else hadn't paid for me... I would have just paid for you and left it at that."
And who knows whose meal he would have ended up as. Mia shuddered as he thought about it, visibly wincing. So that poor kid... he'd ended up as someone's meal.
Sick.

Irritation rippled anew across Third’s consciousness as his friend confessed what his prior intentions had been, and he had to bite back a rather scathing chide, knowing full well it wouldn’t help either of them right now. “Well I’d have ripped you a new one.” It was low, controlled, his fiery temper simmering just beneath the words. Had the man opposite been anyone other than Mia, they would likely have gotten clocked for being such an idiot.
Heaving a sigh to dissipate some of the tension in his shoulders, the dark-haired man allowed that quiet contact to continue. Third could honestly say that he needed it right now, it was solid and reassuring and definitely non-hostile.
It allowed him continued patience as he listened, realizing that his friend had really not been doing well at all during the blond’s solo forays. In fact, it had likely been his need to insure Third’s safety that had kept him on track, and that put to rest some of the thief’s ire. “Well you saved my neck, didncha?” He murmured, “Sounds pretty useful to me. Besides if you’d paid for me and you weren’t taken care of I’d have to bust my a** so I wouldn’t lose ya. We’re really running low on people to trust around here if this is the sort of madness we’re dealing with. Death looming over one’s head makes people do some crazy s**t.” A snort of derision followed the words.
“And there are some really bad ways to go, but I’m finding new excuses to add ‘being eaten’ to the top of my ‘methods not to die’ list. Tch. As if the zombs weren’t bad.” And yeah, the Undead were pretty bad, but live, functioning humans eating other people? That was just messed up.

"Yeah." Mia started to speak, stopped, and then closed his eyes, continuing in a hushed whisper as realization crept into his voice.
"I killed someone, Third." His voice was shaky, his body cold. "I've never done that before." The weight of the sudden realization left him stunned and quiet.
"... I deserve to go back. To jail. I deserve it. I killed him." The raw emotion and stunned realization hit him like a brick, and he pulled away from Third, leaning against the nearest wall as he stared at the ground. His hands were pressed together against his legs right above his knees.
"I... don't want to hurt anyone else. It was my fault. He died because of me."

"Whoa whoa whoa hey there, Sparky...." There was a slow breath as he listened to Mia, and he then rather calmly put an arm just below the other man's shoulders, bringing the blond in against his solid form.
"Talk to me...what. Did you stab him or something? How did you kill someone." He said it with a certain gravity. The thief, after all, was still living his own scenario. Where apparently his words had killed not one, but two people. Yet he was cognizant enough to know that he wasn't responsible...that it was intentional, emotional bullshit concocted by their captors to make them feel as though they were monsters.
Sorry, but he just didn't identify with cannibals.
"Hey hey no..." He chased Mia as he went down, putting a hand on that wall. "You gotta talk to me, my missing boyo, what happened. You can't just give me the teaser trailer." It was light, but an undertone of soothing logic. He couldn't have his friend break on him because of these bastards.

"I chose." Mia murmured softly, staring at his hands. He remembered how he'd chosen the woman because the man just looked so dead inside like he'd given up on life. He'd seen that same look before on others who had been in jail with him, and he shuddered just thinking about it.
"I chose, and because I chose, someone died. It's on my conscience and I can't shake it and it's all my fault." He put his face in his hands and breathed in, just feeling that it was all too much and he just couldn't bear it right now - he had to try to block things out and just breathe.
Breathe, and try to cope as best he could.
"I chose the woman because the kid was just so dead inside like he'd given up on life and there was nothing there to save like there was the woman."
