It was about time that she had been promoted! Hell, here she thought she was doomed to a life of unknowns, undying, and ******** thermometer fetching for however short or long that span ended up being. But that afternoon, as she reported with the wry smile of one who was ready to get ordered around, she had been informed that in fact, she had been promoted! Hah! AND with promotion came a few sweet perks: seniority, responsibility, a title--and now, it would seem, a few underlings of her own.
The bunch were an eclectic group. Two of them looked like they had been caught up in the Day Zero chaos like she did and seemed more fit for a mall crawl even a month after the outbreak than they did anywhere else. The third was still wearing his prison uniform, solidly built like a bull with a furrowed brow and a few interesting scars. He would have made a fun original character, the older woman thought with an inner sigh. What interesting stories they probably all had, even the young ones...
So. Theirs was a delicate work, and though Adelaide had worked her a** off in the infirmary, it still didn't make her a qualified doctor--not even if they had had all the resources at their fingertips. She was going to have to be particular about teaching them, since each looked at least a degree or two clueless about what to do first.
"Alright," she barked at them. "So we got Larry here being a test subject for us. Say hello, Larry."
"I-It's Perry," the meek patient mumbled.
"Alright. Larry here needs to get an IV in him--"
It was then that a real doctor--and she knew this because his stained white coat still had his name tag on it--whirled onto the scene. "Thank you, Adelaide, but I'll take it from here," he said stiffly.
She rolled her eyes and gestured for him to get on with it.
"So, the IV."
(And she knew it was going to be a time, because even the mere mention of it made one of the mall crawlers lose some color in her face.)
Adelaide waited patiently until the doctor finally allowed her the needle. "Carefully," he reminded her, like she was just going to get possessed somehow and jab the poor soul. She made a face at the doctor before turning to the patient. True, her hands could shake if she was really under pressure, but it wasn't like she was 70; give her a break now.
Although she did have trouble finding Larry's vein the first time. Not her fault he didn't drink enough fluids, okay?

Now disinfecting she knew off the top of her head even before she had come to shadow at the medbay: it had been useful to learn while the boys were growing up, seeing as they were both adventurous types and tended to stack up the cuts and scrapes. Adelaide managed to bandage up Larry in no time, and she liked to think it inspired the other recruits.

"Listen up, Larry."
"P-Perry."
She laid a hand on his shoulder. "You did good in that fight club match, eh? But watch yourself. We need every able bodied person available when the s**t hits the fan, alright? And you, I see you got a nasty right hook. Save it for the undying."
The young man still ducked his head humbly, but at least he appeared less intimidated after the quick pep talk.
