Ingrid counted her casino tokens over before stowing them carefully away in her purse. Now that she knew she was helping someone else, now that someone else's life was in her hands, gambling felt like a horrible idea. The more time she spent watching the poker and blackjack tables, the more she felt it: it was too risky.
And like hell she was going in the room labeled Russian Roulette.
This left her pacing about the casino, occasionally checking on the slot machines to see if she was allowed to play them again and shrinking back when the attendants gave her dirty looks.

Ingrid froze for a moment. How many days had it been since she'd had an actual conversation? A real one? Resting the tip of her umbrella on the ground, Ingrid spun it around by the handle with one finger. "House always wins," she responded, trying to keep the bitterness out of her voice. She reached up to touch the collar around her neck. "I don't trust the games. I was hoping maybe I could find coins on the floor, like, if somebody dropped them."
It sounded ridiculous when she said it out loud like that.

Rajni's mouth became a thin line of a smirk. This girl was very wound up. Judging by the umbrella, they were from the same place though. That at least made her more of a friend than others.

"Why would I trust them?" she asked, raising her eyebrows. "The odds aren't in my favor at all. If you're lucky you'll earn back the entry fee, and if not, well."
She rubbed a spot on her neck under the collar. It was starting to get itchy. "This is a sustainable system for them. That means that a lot of people don't buy their freedom."

She nodded, oddly enough. "I thought as much myself. I have asked a free man if their word was good, and he said it was. They removed his collar when he paid their fees."

"So I should... what, leave my life up to chance?" Ingrid pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. "They do remove the collars if we succeed? That's good to know." She forced a faint smile onto her face. It didn't feel right - she was out of practice. "Name's Ingrid."

Her smile became a bit more real at that. "That - that'd be really nice of you, actually. Thanks." She flipped her umbrella up to lean it against her shoulder and began to walk again, scanning the floor. There had to be some to find somewhere.

Rajni sighed, unsure what she'd gotten herself into. She was only a handful away from buying herself so it wasn't exactly a stressful situation, but ...

It would be easier, just playing along, but Ingrid didn't want to take the risk. She had been curious about how this place had the electricity still going, but now she wasn't sure if she wanted to know. She had never been big on risks.
A glimmer of metal caught the corner of her eye, and Ingrid saw a purse lying underneath an empty blackjack table. She moved towards it slowly, cautiously, and when nobody tried to stop her she bent down and picked it up.
Full of coins. It was her lucky day. "Rajni," Ingrid called, waving her over. "How many do you still need? We can split this."
