There was an area of small seating off to the side of the bar; a few people dressed in fancier clothes than the students were lounging chatting and laughing as if nothing mattered. Unlike them they didn’t have collars around their necks leaving a bitter taste in Harper’s mouth as she sat down in an empty booth. She tired to imagine what people like them where like, knowing the fact that they were eating other people, that they were sitting in a room where they auctioned off people’s lives like herd of cattle. Thinking about it made her mad, mad enough she wanted to punch the next person she saw in the face.
It wouldn’t do a whole lot of good thought for her, she was better off wasting her energy on getting her coins and buying herself. As soon as she did that she could help others out. When she started she was doing pretty well at Blackjacks but now she was losing more than she had wanted she had to regroup and rethink.

He had been wandering from table to table, watching over some of the students playing for their lives in the casino games. Some were coping with the stress and the situation as well as they could, while the others were visibly compromised emotionally. He had taken it upon himself to look after them, offering a few tips and advice for the games, as well as taking note of the ones that were tilting, getting them to walk away from the table and refresh their mentality.
As for his own progress, well, that was lower on the list of priorities.
“Tough luck?” he slid into the seat next to hers. Peter began to notice that the people surrounding them were not participants, but rather the perpetrators of the dastardly operation. He let a moment of silence sit between them before speaking up again.
“Peter Kim, used to teach at the Engineering faculty, but now I mainly babysit the generators. And you? Your faculty and major?” A typical opening conversation between a Professor and student, and an attempt to recall some sense of normalcy amidst the madness. He was far from being a trained counselor, but he had a good 20 years of life experience over them which probably accounted for something.

“A little.” Harper looked over the new guest who had taken a seat next to her. As he looked around she could only guess that he had realized that everyone else in the seating area were a participant of the dinner auction. It made her a little ill to her stomach to think about it really, eating other humans. Enough to really deeply consider becoming a vegetarian for the rest of her life.
“Harper Caine, former masters of art student and designer for student center. I can’t say I ever took your class sorry, not really good at math to tell you the truth.” She gave him a strained smile as she tried to be lighthearted talking about class and such. “Did you teach at the college long? I mean where you somewhere else and moved or have you been where it used to be for long?”

The busied noises coming from the restaurant was hardly a cheerful addition to the atmosphere. Peter had noticed the particularly repulsed expression on the young woman, making note to avoid speaking of the topic at all.
“Harper, nice to meet you,” he nodded. “Can't say many take my class at all,” he laughed, returning the smile.
“I've been teaching for a little under 20 years, been at Emerston for about 10 now.” He tapped the table absentmindedly, trying to recall. “Came to Canada for University and moved back for a bit, but since I've started teaching at Emerston I've been here for good.”
“And yourself? Have you gotten a chance to travel around on exchange?”

“Really? I thought engineering was one of those classes a lot of people got into mostly because the pay afterwards is pretty good. I mean a lot better than what I would have made really.” She didn’t really pick her major for money or fame but it was something she had always been good at. It was something Harper had enjoyed doing as well and thought that one day she could have spent her life doing it.
“Oh cool, so you are from the states then? Why did you decide to stay here?” She had been to the states a few times herself, considering it hadn’t been far but she always wondered what it was like completely living in a different country.
“No, not really. Traveling wasn’t something I could have afforded. It was just my sister, my dad, and I living together and we didn’t have a whole lot. I mean we lived, we had food, never worried but we weren’t rolling in cash either. I didn’t want to add more reason so spend money, so I spent most of my college live partying, working and going to class.”

“Well you're not wrong, it's what my parents said as well.” His mind flitted to them briefly, before suppressing any more thoughts of them. He didn't really want to think about how they would handle the news, or the lack of news from him, the way things were looking.
“But the work there didn't make me happy, which is why I'm here I suppose,” he continued, “I thought it'd be nice to return to my alma mater.”
“Korea actually, but I'm a citizen here now,” he scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
“Seems like you've got your life in order,” he smiled, listening to her talk about herself and her family. “So then,” he got up from his seat, giving the room a glance over, “Time to prove your worth? Good luck at the tables, I heard poker's a good game.”
