Matilda woke to the sound of explosions. Jolting awake in her bed, her thoughts raced with thoughts of intruders. It took a moment for her to realize the explosions weren't from grenades or guns, but from a bright light outside. Fireworks.
How long had it been since she'd seen those? It felt like ages.
As her mind began to work its way out of a sleep state, the woman wondered who was able to produce such a spectacle. Weren't they worried about the infected and undying? Yet as she continued to watch, not a single one of the vicious creatures could be seen moving towards the deafening roars.
Was there more to the lights than she initially thought? Donning her number four jersey, Matilda went to investigate...
...A casino? A huge one, at that. "How are they generating so much energy?," she murmured, stepping forward in determination to investigate the strange sight.

There was actually a casino? An honest-to-god casino in the middle of an apocalypse? It felt so off to just see people casually playing slots a little ways away. It was as if everyone's sense of disbelief had been put on hold.
This couldn't be real. Her inner skeptic couldn't honestly believe this was real. It was too good to be true. Walking down the isles, Matilda watched carefully for any signs of danger or foul play. When none was to be found, it only made her worries grow rather than increase.
Her gut said something was wrong.
"Welcome to Delta Casinos! To begin, we will play with a currency called Casino coins. You can use them later for fantastic prizes!"
The woman jumped and spun around to find herself face to face with an individual holding out what looks to be a drink. "No thank you, I don't drink," Matilda declined. She wasn't about to take a suspicious drink from a stranger in a casino in the middle of a monster outbreak.
Even though she declined the drink, she wasn't able to refuse the coins that were passed off to her.
"Hmm...," she pondered, turning over one of the coins in her fingers. It seemed authentic. "Perhaps I can find out what's going on here if I use these coins..."
Seating herself at the nearest slot machine, Matilda leaned back in case something bad happened, and hesitantly pulled the lever.
The reel spun for a couple seconds before slowing down. Cringing as it fell on still on the last section, she tensed at the sound of chimes going off. Rather than coming under attack like she expected, though, two coins popped out of a panel on the side.
She won?

Pulling the lever once more, she saw that whatever she was landing on wasn't a winning spin. Preparing herself, she was mildly surprised at the low 'oops' tone that played.
Was this really all there was to it?

Spinning once again, Matilda listened to the win chime in confusion as two more coins were ejected from the machine. Was this really just a slot machine and nothing more? She knew she was a pessimistic person, but...
why did she still feel so on edge?

As Matilda got up to investigate the area some more, she stumbled against one of the other machines. Was she sick? How could she have gotten so dizzy so quickly?
The smell of smoke made her heart race and her stomach churn. There was... something in the air... she had.. to...
She groggily awoke to she sound of stifled cries and labored breathing. She attempted to lift her arm, but found its lack of respond strange. Was she bound?
Lights flash on and Matilda scrunches her eyes shut to futilely negate the glare. Daring to squint, a loud voice, one coming from a speaker, welcomes them. So there are more? With how tight the ropes around her are around her, she couldn't see for herself.
As the rules of the 'game' were explained, Matilda paled. They were going to be bought? They weren't items to be passed around!
She managed to calm herself down just in time to hear about the casino coins. So that was the purpose behind the coins! She knew the casino was more than it seemed! She just had to play... and win. If she was lucky, she would be able to save some other people as well!
Her anger flared at the fate of the unpurchased. Cannibals. This was the purpose of the casino... to lure victims for food, like a venus flytrap.
Seething silently, she contemplated how she could quickly earn enough coins to buy herself and everyone else out. Matilda wouldn't stand for this trickery! Unfortunately, they didn't release her to 'play' like she hoped. She tried to hold back the need to panic as the entire chair is dragged away into another room. Inside were two more people tied to chairs just like Matilda, though they were gagged as well.
"Now," booms the announcer voice in the new room, a much smaller one, "these are the losing players from the last game. A Bunch of sore losers if you ask me. But we're giving you a chance to redeem one as their patron. If you manage to buy yourself out of the games, then you will also buy one of them out too. Now, which one will it be?"
She had to choose? What kind of sick game was this? She didn't have the right to play god! Even though she thought that, her lack of decision may end up with them both dying. Looking from side to side, she reluctantly chose the young boy. She hated it, but her heart couldn't take the thought of dooming a fresh-faced youth. Matilda's gaze caught the woman's for a moment, and a lance of regret went through her. She was terrified, and her eyes held so many unspoken words: misery, betrayal, fear, anger, the list seemed endless. Before, she could think to call out, a series of gunshots rang out.
Swiveling over to a thudding sound, her eyes widened as she boy she had chosen laid in a pool of his own blood inches away from the doorway. He had tried to escape, and was gunned down as a result.
Her blood boiled. She would end this, one way or another.

After being untied, Matilda was bodily carried out of the room and thrown out the door. Before she could double back to question the man, the door slammed shut and a loud click sounded. Locked. Turning back to what appeared to be a along hallway, Matilda raced to the end.
Throwing the door open, she found... the casino floor. This was where she would play for her life. The sense of foreboding made sense in so many ways now. Her sense of dread was from the other 'players' in fear for their lives and the lives of their companions.
Let them try to buy her off. She wouldn't go down without a fight.
