A tall Japanese man with red hair stood scowling with his back on one of the poles. Wataru didn't really want to play any of these games. They all involved far too much social interaction for his taste.
Still. It wasn't like he could afford to slave away in this casino, either. Free as he'd be of the undying, this place was ******** shitty and endorsed slavery. And...it couldn't last forever. He tugged grumpily at the collar around his neck, gaze darting around the room in search of more familiar faces.
Wait, there was that girl again; the small one. Wataru didn't know her name - had never talked to her - but he at least could tell she was a resident of Clearview, with an umbrella to show for it. Anyway, he'd seen her around.
"You!" he called, and then remembered that the word 'you' could refer to literally anyone. What could he do?
...right. He ran forward to tap her on the shoulder. "Hey," he said. Would she recognize him? Probably not - Wataru wasn't much of one for community-building events, and tended to slouch, late, into the tail end of house meetings.

She'd more or less been minding her own business ever since coming into the casino. For however long she'd been there (and she honestly had no idea since she didn't want to go anywhere near the doors in case the guards were hyperaware and shot anything that got anywhere near them) she had yet to see any friends or familiar faces. Heck, she'd even take vaguely familiar faces at this point.
When she heard someone call "you" she didn't turn around. The voice was distant and it really could have been for anyone, so she went about her trek toward one of the poker tables when someone tapped her on her shoulder.
"Huh?" she asked, thinking it'd be one of the attendants trying to give her another drink. Like she'd take a sip out of anything she found in this hellhole...
But when she turned she saw a familiar face, one she could actually put a name to, and she smiled up at him. "Wataru!" she cried, a wave of relief washing over her when it finally dawned on her that she wasn't alone. Which was terrible to think she was happy to see someone else she knew with a collar, but...it was comforting, regardless of how messed up it might have been.
"Oh my gosh, you know I haven't seen anyone else from Clearview! How have you been? Are you okay?" She blinked at his collar and noted his value. "...Are you any closer to getting out of here?"

Wataru's base-level irritation faded when she said his name. "You sure have a memory for faces," he said, raising his eyebrows. She was also way too nice for him, probably. "Yeah, I've - I've...I glimpsed October," he confessed, scratching the back of his neck. "And my friend Renita? I don't know if you - she kind of stays up on the fourteenth floor." With her ******** awful sister, and the LPer a*****e, and his roommate, who Wataru got along fine with. But he hadn't seen any of them around, and he kind of hoped they didn't end up making their way in here. Even Sawyer. She'd at least avenge her sister gracefully, right?
"I'm...I'm okay. Not very excited for, you know." He waved a hand pointlessly. All of this. "Are you all right yourself? Would you...recommend any of these games?"
Yeah, so there was the big question: Wataru was always interested in saving his own a**. She looked unharmed, right?
"I'm pretty close," he confessed. "Got...twenty-three coins left? I'm at seventy-two," he added, watching her examine his collar. "You doing okay?"

A month was plenty of time to tie names to faces, or at least Mel thought so. While she didn't really talk to everyone at Clearview, she tried to keep up with names and such.
The news that there was at least one other among them offered her a bit of relief mixed in with worry, a sobered and more realistic feeling compared to the plain relief she felt when she saw Wataru. "Only good thing I can say is that they're alive at least," assuming they could all buy their safety by the end of the day. But she left that part out; no need to repeat something so morbid.
She nodded and placed a hand on her own collar, frowning. "I'm alright," at least as far as her coins were concerned. Being in the casino at all was...well.
"Stuck at 64 for now, but I'll make it. I think I saw an exchange booth, if I'm out of luck I might go there and see what happens..." She had no plans of dying here if there was anything she could do to help it.
Blue eyes focused on a table past Wataru when he asked his question, and she recalled her luck with Blackjack then frowned. "Some games are better than others, I think. I've only tried Blackjack--no luck for me, but I think I just suck at gambling--and the slots, which are small gains but at least it's something." She gave it a bit more thought, though.
"Bingo's also alright, nothing too flashy there. Have you tried the poker tables?"

Yeah, well Wataru just didn't like people, okay? He only really remembered names when he interacted with people a lot. He was used to people coming and going.
"I hope you can get yourself out," Wataru nodded. He didn't care much for her personally, but he also thought this place was ******** nuts. Asking people to sell themselves into slavery? Huge nope. "I'm not too into fake currency myself, but of course - of course it's a special circumstance." The sentence came with a hollow laugh. What a stupid euphemism.
He leaned back on his heels, running his hands through his hair. "I...did some slots," he said lamely. They'd been fine, profit-wise. "Small gains, but at least I never lost, right? I haven't done anything else," he admitted. "I'd...probably be okay at poker."

"Thanks," she said, offering up a small smile. She wasn't so familiar with him that she could say she cared about him as anything more than an acquaintance, but she didn't want anyone--even someone she hated--to spend too much time here. And yes, it certainly was a "special" circumstance. One she sure as hell didn't care for, too.
"I hope you can get out, too. The sooner the better."
At mention of slots Mel shifted her gaze to the machines and sighed. They yielded her a nice little profit as well, but it hadn't been enough. "If I pushed my luck there I feel like I probably would have lost all of my coins," she said with a weak laugh. The idea of losing all her coins put a frown on her face immediately following the statement though, and she turned to him again.
"I haven't tried poker yet, but I'll probably be lousy at that, too. I lost twice at blackjack...set me back ten coins."

"That's definitely the ******** truth," Wataru grinned. "You're..." She was worth a lot more than he was, he realized, after checking her collar. Well...not a lot, but it was pretty hard to get coins here. "But...yeah, my slot machine went out of order eventually."
He paused. "We should get a group of Clearview-ers together for poker," he said, after a bit. "I should hope..."
Well, Wataru didn't really know anyone. The perks of being an antisocial hermit, right? But at the same time, Wataru didn't wish this kind of fate on anyone. Even if it meant he had to talk to people he didn't know, eventually. "I'll stay away from blackjack, then," he added, looking over at her and shaking his head. "I wouldn't put it past them to...y'know, cheat."

Ugh, cheating. She'd heard that some casinos did that, just to keep the money rolling in. "Yeah, or I was just lousy," she said, preferring to think that she lost because she was just bad at it as opposed to being cheated. The latter made her feel...worse about the whole thing. Like there was even less hope of her getting out if they were just cheating and keeping everyone in, in the first place.
"I mean, I gambled and hit when I had 16 and 15, two different hands, and lost both times. So it's worth a try?" All the games were, at least once, just to see what your luck with it actually was. She's probably try blackjack again soon. "Just my two cents, if you're interested."
She shrugged and tugged at her collar, clearly unhappy about it. It was heavy. And something was scratching at her neck, like a rough piece of plastic of metal. And it hurt.
"I think we could use a poker game," she said eventually after trying to get at the irritation on her neck. "Maybe come up with ideas on how to buy everyone out of here. I'd hate to think of any of ours getting stuck here to deal with who knows whatever they plan on doing with whoever's left..."
Her mind flashed back to the kid from earlier and had to force the tears back.

...okay. One thing Wataru was good at was math, and he had to admit that hitting in blackjack when you had a sixteen? Was a bad ******** idea. So maybe blackjack wasn't rigged after all. Carefully he revised his opinion of the girl before him, but he considered her carefully nonetheless.
"Yeah, I'll - I'll at least give it a shot," he said, nodding. It was worth at least a bit of a try, right?
"I agree, though - it'd be real shitty for any Downtownies to be left behind just because we were too busy preparing for the apocalypse and not this." This meaning the casino, obviously. "I'm up for poker, if you let me know...later." Right now he maybe had to figure out whether Sawyer or Lenny or Oscar were actually here.

Well...that's why it was gambling, though she'd learned since then that yes, hitting with a 16 or 15 was a bad idea. She wouldn't do it again, that was for sure. Live and learn type of deal, so at least it was a learning experience.
She bobbled her head along in agreement with basically everything he said, not really sure what else she could add to it. If anything they should probably toddle off and try more games to get their coin counts up and buy their safety rather than stand around and talk...
"I'm probably not gonna be very good at that either, but I'd play if it means finding more of ours and kind of having a meeting or something," she said after a bit of thought. "Honestly I've mostly been looking at people's numbers as opposed to their faces, but..." and she let the thought trail as her gaze went back to one of the tables. "I'll try and keep a lookout for more Downtownies and we'll see about that poker game, yeah?"

Wataru winced. "Sounds good," he said. "I'll...look for my neighbors."
They were the only people he really knew, anyway.

Mel nodded and meandered off to one of the tables to watch some more games before playing any of her own, though she did turn and wave goodbye before she got too far. She...wasn't really sure she wanted to risk her coins again just yet. Maybe in a bit...
