Good news after bad news, still was stricken by the cruel fact that Rebecca fell, her ears no longer hurt. As if magic had cast on her, it didn't buzz anymore. The mall rats gathered in The Winchester again for the arrangement after Rebecca's death, a new guy called 888 was introduced to them. Position can be replaced, but the person couldn't. She was gone forever. She would never smile and say that "welcome back" to her. She felt sad, it should be sad when someone you know died, no matter how aloof you are.
Someone told the news about the thorns and got praised, to that, Gretel remained noncommittal. One behind the scene didn't give time to those grieve and mourn, the game the bandits were talking had begun, dragging the survivors in.
Something loud like an explosion roared from far, those who climbed to the third floor peeked from the window yelling and calling the rest. They got out and looked skyward at the hint of lights above.
Firework.
Things that appeared in festivals, for events of celebration. Gretel was dumbfounded at the blooming flowers at the sky, but when her senses snapped back at her in split seconds, she looked for the undying or infected. In great surprise, they didn't move, like fascinated by the beautiful scene, their eyes were stagnant. After discussion, the mall rats were all out to scavenge for supplies.
Upon arrival, the first thing Gretel did was blocking the dazzling lights, like the mythical Las Vegas. She looked upward, with squinting eyes to use eyelashes to block some of lights, it wrote: Delta Casino. Gretel was very skeptical of this edifice suddenly appeared, where they got the large amount of electricity from. Even if she couldn't find any supplies, she was gonna pry for the secret of electricity, the female thought.
Gretel's hand let go of the door once she was inside, busy in deciding whether to cover her nose and mouth or her fragile ears. She turned the shoulder strap to get to her bag, pulled out the mask to put on and then used her hands to cover ears. It was packed with people, she couldn't believe what she saw, it was a world separated from the outside world, They desperately fought to live, covered in blood, tears and dirt. They dug the potentially dangerous places for simply a bag of cheap candies or a bottle with water. They was deprived of sleep and happiness.
She sighed for how unfair this world was, even she knew she can't say much, whether it was real or hallucinations. With her usual resting b***h face, she scrutinized the big area. The sound of coin jingling as they dropped into the bucket drew her attention, she stood behind the Carousel and watched how others played. Swears and cheers rose and fell. It was a game testing merely your luck.
She watched for a while, then headed to the tables. Card games required more of strategies and thus she had better interests in them. They had two, poker or blackjack. Gretel had to admit she wasn't familiar with poker's rules, she didn't play it before. She was more of a video gamer. Someone in iron-neat uniform walked over and handed her a cocktail in ambiguous pink-yellow. "Thank you." She took a small sip of the drink, just enough to wet her lips. The cherry at the bottom swayed as she put the Martini glass down to take the coins from the man.
Gretel decided to give it a chance, she picked an empty table and sat for a round of Blackjack. Knowing her luck well, she wasn't surprised she only got four in total.

After losing the game, she continued to wander in the casino for possible scavenging. It seemed to be a normal luxurious casino but it was too surreal to be conceivable. Her instinct was right again, walking slowly she abruptly felt dizzy and lurched for a step. Gretel tried to still herself but like a drunken person, the world began to spin around. Biting her lips, she staggered towards the entrance to get out of the casino, one step, two steps, and three steps. Her hands and legs shook like an old lady as she moved on, but they could no longer support her body. Same applied for her eyes, images blurred and vision darkened. She collapsed and before everything black out, she heard herself hitting against the ground.
"Ah....." she naturally groaned in soreness. The hand wanted to touch her head was pulled back, even her vision didn't come fully back to her, her eyes flickered to her wrist. Barely, she felt something tied her down and she wasn't alone. Where is she? The last minute it was all darkness, the next she almost shut her eyes immediately with the white lights.
Gretel's ears buzzed slightly at the voice, then the noises were collected. After a while, her senses aligned. She was in a classroom....not possible, the voice continued to come out from the speaker -
"Attention all Casino players! Welcome to our tenth annual casino games! A big round of applause to our new players!"
If Gretel still not knowing what happened, then her knowledge from playing games and reading should be put on a waste. She twisted to try loosening the ropes but it didn't work. Maybe she shouldn't touch that cocktail, she lost to the temptation of thirst. Maybe she should put on her mask earlier, but there was no time for regrets. Things happened were happened, she wasn't wasting time on that. Therefore, she calmed down and paid attention to those "rules". Despite she was forced to play the game, Gretel found it fair. "If you wanted something, you needed to earn it." That was her principles in the years she lived and she would continue to follow it til the day she perished.
After the briefing, some screamed and cried, Gretel remained composed as always. She took the chance to ask a question but the speaker interrupted before she could do so. A man got close to her chair and dragged it, the friction made it screeched, she grimaced at the sharp noise. She was separated from the rest.
Gretel sighed at the quandary, from the speaker's intonation, she knew they wasn't doing it for kindness but for fun. Male or female? She had to pick one of them, in normal cases the young teen would be picked. Gretel was not normal person, she'd picked the one tends to give her less trouble. The woman she picked shrieked in relief, Gretel thought she might make the wrong choice. Her eyes followed the two attendants from freeing the woman to carrying each of the man's arm and dragged him away after cutting the ropes he was tied up with. Knowing what fate awaited for him, the man screamed and yelled in horror.
Tied with her chair, she could only took a glimpse of the room the teen was dragged into. Why they're so scared, she had to know so she asked the question. As the attendant asked the question in an uncomfortable way, the woman reacted wildly with her head shaking. Sorry unknown lady, she had to know the answer, some people from her faction also entered the casino, she needed information on what they might be facing.

"Then we will tell you, at a price."
The voice happily announced and almost simultaneously the woman shrieked, after one second, with the warm bloods splashed onto her face and painted the room red, she understood why. In the uniform buzzing noises and the sound of tearing flesh and bones, she realized she killed a person. The eyes widened in shock and series of emotions but Gretel suppressed all of them. If that was what they wanted to see, she wasn't showing it.
As the electric saw severed the body into even pieces, she learned that it wasn't a first time they did it. She was too overwhelmed to make any reaction. The gore scene was disgusting, the body was still twitching. The moment the saw cut into her body and her body thrashed and flailed in natural reflex, followed by the bloods can't wait to pour out. The one holding the saw was enjoying it, and another numbly washed off the bloods on the piece with cold eyes. They packaged the parts as if they were treating hams, that was the last thing she saw before the door closed.
They freed her and escorted her down the hallway, away from the slaughter. Her face paled, energy deprived from her body so they rather dragged her along, in front of a door and let go. Gretel buried her face into her hands, collapsed on the floor while wondering what was the number of deaths she had been the woman was. When she was still helpless, the door opened.

Gretel was back in the classroom, but another one filled with familiar faces, from her and other factions. Ironically, her mind was thinking it was such a big game when she just witnessed something that violent. Her instincts were right, but she understood too late. She took a deep breathe, tried to brace up to play the game.
She was a player, and if she lost, the price was her life or other people's lives too. She still held her testing ground theory and it gave her a bad chill. It felt like an adventure novel she read, with a dystopian post-apocalyptic setting.
If you want something, you need to pay efforts for it.
