It'll make us useful, Autumn had said. If there's fireworks there must be other good things, they'd all said. Joy Ann hadn't said much herself, since her jaw was still a little sore, though she could definitely talk clearly again. It was kind of strange, being woken up in the middle of the night to find herself with only a dull ache where there had been burning pain, but maybe she hadn't been as hurt as she'd thought. Sleep could do wonders.
She shuddered, following along behind her kitchen-running friend as they entered the casino crowd. Where did they get all this electricity from? Joy Ann paused, marveling at all the lights. She had never seen anything so flashy before in her life... And now she couldn't see Autumn either. Not to the left, not to the right... Joy Ann let the crowd carry her along, confused and dazed and not sure what to think. As the doors opened, she was hit by a wall of sound. Oh. So this was a casino.

After the sound came the smell of thick tobacco smoke, followed by waves of alcohol. Joy Ann wrinkled her nose, wondering if it was just some internal compass that said 'these smells will only lead to trouble' or if it was some memory somewhere... But she had never been in a casino before, so that couldn't be it, could it?
She wandered a little, keeping an eye out for Autumn and for Shaun, since she was pretty sure he had also been headed this way. The radio in her bag squawked with voices all saying different things, as well as the general noises of the casino. Huh, there must have been quite a few other people here then.
"Oh, no thank you," she declined the drink that Mr. Snazzy Suit offered her, thinking alcohol probably wouldn't make this situation any better. Where had Autumn gotten off to? Wait, was that the warden over there?
Before she could follow up, Mr. Snazzy Suit was talking to her again, this time handing her a bag of coins. "Um... Thanks..?" But she didn't want to play. Heck, she didn't even know what most of the sparkly, loud machines were for. She was feeling quite awkward in general and really wished that she could just find her friend then go back to the prison... She was way under-dressed for this fancy place. That much was for sure.

After awhile, the feelings of awkwardness faded into feelings of sleepiness. I'll just sit down in this comfy chair here, Joy Ann decided, barely able to keep her eyes open. Surely Autumn would be able to find her more easily if she wasn't moving around... Even if she was now completely out and not actively looking for her friend.
When she came to, she definitely wasn't in the same place as before. While others may have panicked and gotten defensive, Joy Ann panicked and her brain completely turned in on itself. She had enough time to register that she was tied to her chair, but her brain told her it would be bad to try to figure out more about her situation, given all it had experienced in the past month.
When the lights blinded her and the announcement started, the former teacher sat their numbly, completely zoned out. The details of the 'game' were lodging themselves in her brain, but the classroom atmosphere had caused her to go into acute shock. This was too much. She couldn't have thought about any of it, even if she had wanted to. Her students weren't here-- Her students probably were all dead, and here she was, a disgrace to them as a teacher, tied up but still living and--
NO! Joy Ann sobbed into her gag, not even paying enough attention to ask a question. Soon enough it didn't matter, since her chair was being moved into another room. Tears streaming down her face, she blinked numbly as she was told to pick between two people.
Eventually nodding towards the young man out of reflex, mainly because he reminded her of Shaun, Joy Ann sat, staring straight ahead as the woman started screaming and the young man tried to make a break for it.
Gunshots. Then the announcer's voice again. Joy Ann wasn't even going to look. What was the point anyhow? Even if she managed to save herself, there wasn't anyone else to save, was there?

Joy Ann stared at the crowds as she was pushed back into the main room, wondering if there was a point to even trying to save herself anymore. Had she really done everything up until now for this?
A waiter walked by, and the scent of honey wafted past her nose. Honey... Cakes... Shaun. Shaun had to have a second chance! He was going to be respectable, dammit, and she was going to see it happen even if it was the last thing she did. And Autumn, now that Autumn had her sight back, she was going to be the best cook for the faction, and the warden! Where would any of them had been without the warden?
Joy Ann had never gambled before in her life, but there was always a first time for everything, wasn't there? Especially when it came down to gambling for her life and the lives of her friends.
