The casino - loud, almost abrasive and obnoxious in its intensity and gaudiness, spreading music and sound and chaos everywhere - was almost the exact opposite of what Raffin was used to. He liked the peace and quiet of his office - or rather, he had liked it, because the office in question was no longer in existence (along with his clipboard, sadly). And before that, he'd spent most of his time huddled up doing paperwork at his desk, when he was not observing experiments or supervising new interns.

Now, however, he spent his time simply trying to survive each day, to not die. It wasn't exactly the most idealistic time, but Raffin had been treating it just like another experiment, another example of the differences in social situations. He would have to learn to adapt, and he'd have to become the subject of his own observations and experiments, that was all. He could do this. He could learn to move on his own.

Hopefully.

He hadn't seen anyone else around just yet, save for the babble of voices he could hear coming from the building. Raffin sucked in a sharp breath as he surveyed the place, but it didn't seem terrible from the outside. And the fireworks that he'd seen earlier were still fresh in his mind, a glorious familiarity of something long past (he'd always loved fireworks, after all).

Pros and cons were listed inside of his head, but when they became too much, he took out his pen and scribbled a few choice words onto his arm instead, Raffin frowning at them. The pros, it seemed, outweighed the cons in this matter. Maybe there was food and drink inside. Maybe there was a bed, a proper place to sleep.

Maybe it was just what he needed.

He shifted from one foot to the other, waffling, and then drifted inside.

The noise that met him on the other side of the doors almost overwhelmed him, but Raffin suppressed this emotion in favor of other things. He shook his head at the offered drink, preferring to keep his wits about him if he could, and moved instead to the poker table.

It was a logic game, wasn't it? He could try and logic his way through it, and all would be well.

Or maybe not. Raffin got a delightful straight, which he'd been working towards - a whole four in a row, he thought gleefully - but it turned out that the others had better hands than his, and most unfortunately, he did not seem to be fortunate enough to play another hand.

Raffin slunk away rather dejectedly, but determined to keep his chin up nonetheless.

At some point in time - he wasn't quite sure when - he fell asleep.

Or had he? Raffin didn't remember closing his eyes, just a lot of dizziness and staggering around unsteadily before the blackness had taken him. And now he was sitting in a chair with voices around him, confusion reigning as he struggled to understand the situation. His mind worked furiously to try and think of a solution, hypothesize a possible outcome, but there were too many unknown variables, too many theories that would never take flight.

He was stuck in the chair, but he could at least talk, could at least ask questions, couldn't he?

Raffin opened his mouth to say something, but didn't get a chance to. A second later, he was dragged off the stage and placed in the room, two others across from him, both looking a little worse for the wear. Raffin gave them as reassuring a smile as he could, but the voice was back, and with each second that ticked by, each word that dripped out, a cold, sinking sensation could be felt in the pit of his stomach.

He nodded at the young lady - she seemed the most fragile, the screams of the boy, muffled as they were, sent chills down Raffin's spine. His mouth fell open, eyes wide and startled, and he wasn't sure he should ask, wasn't sure if he had the mental fortitude to ask, but -

"What's in the room?"

"Do you really want to know?"

He had to know. He didn't want to know. He did want to know.

The lady was shaking her head and he still had to know, had to work out the puzzle, had to find the answer, because it was right there in front of him, and he had to take it if he could, had to learn what it was that he could about what was here, what he was dealing with.

He had to have the answers, no matter the cost.

Later, he would maybe regret it. Later, he would remember her screams, and her raw shrieks and the sound of hot blood sizzling on the floor, the buzz of the saw and the stench of blood, coppery and metallic in the air. He would remember the sight of the grinder, and the way that the limbs kept twitching, like they were still alive, and he would remember it all, all too well.

He threw up in the nearest trash can after leaving.
