Nate never thought that breathing would feel so good, but since his ribs had seemingly miraculously healed he was adopting a new perspective on things. It felt good to once again be able to stretch without having to wince or cry out in pain, and sleeping was a total b***h. Every time he rolled over or shifted he would wake up feeling as though someone were leaning over him and drilling into his chest cavity. Not pleasant. He was more than happy to have left those horrible experiences behind, and was prepared for what was to come.

However, he hadn’t quite expected a casino that lit up the sky like some nearby meteor shower to be what came next. He had to blink a few times to make sure that he wasn’t hallucinating. Was there something in the water? He hadn’t had any save for what was in the bottles they salvaged, so what was going on exactly? Fireworks lit the sky like nothing had happened, like the infected were not roaming about attempting to feast on the faces of anyone they came across. Lights were flashing from the tall tower and at that moment he believed the name of the casino should be the Suicide. Didn’t they know that the creepers were attracted to all of that?

Despite his better judgment he drew nearer but there were still no infected in sight, something that was both awe inspiring and unsettling at the same time. He scanned the area from left to right but saw no mobs, he didn’t even hear their nasty groans or gurgles. “What the-“ He continued walking until he finally reached the front doors. Something deep within him cried out to stay away, to steer clear, but he stepped through them anyway.

[ENTER CASINO - Receives 50 coins]

As he crossed the threshold he was immediately assaulted by the rolling trill of slot machines, the yelling of bets being won or lost, and the din of people talking merrily to one another. How on earth had this place managed to survive the outbreak? With all of the lights and clamor one would have thought this would be the very first place to be hit by the bloodthirsty infected. How could they even afford to keep the lights on? He was left reeling in a cloud of cigarette smoke, booze and overwhelming perfume worn by dolled up ladies looking for a night on the town. Was this some kind of a dream?

He began to check himself for bruises just to be sure he hadn’t made up the entire Day Zero phenomenon due to some kind of psychotic break. He had been stressed after graduation, but the bruises painting his otherwise light complexion told the true tale of his struggles and affirmed that he had actually endured what he thought he had. In this world of turmoil a place as easygoing as this couldn’t possibly exist, but it did.

He nearly jumped out of his skin as an attendant walked up and greeted him. “Welcome!” He shouted exuberantly, slapping Nate on the back before stuffing a handful of coins into his hands. “Feel free to try your luck! You won’t be sorry!” The greeting was vague at best, but before Nate could ask any further questions the attendant singled out his next victim.

CYOA Part 1
Your character selects to play the slot machines! They sit down, and roll the machines. Make a new post in your [ Casino solo ] thread. Roll 5d6 (5 6-sided dice). If you roll any matching pair (ie, 1,1, 2,2, etc), you win 2 coins! You can only play this UP TO three times (three pulls, in separate rolled RP posts). Write your RP reaction to what you have done/ experience with it.

Make sure in this post you include your usual OOC segment [ AND LOG THE AMOUNT OF CASINO COINS YOU HAVE ]. You should have a base of 25 to start +whatever you win from pulling slot machines!

[SLOT MACHINE - Round One +2 coins]

He stood in one place for a moment attempting to make sense of what had just happened. Not too long ago he had gotten the tar kicked out of him by a mob of flesh eaters and now he was invited to play casino games? Something certainly didn’t sit right with him, but he couldn’t deny the beaming faces and laughter filling this unusual place. If there was something nefarious going on, he couldn’t see any evidence of it. His palm began to feel sweaty as the coins he was holding grew warm from his body heat. With a flippant movement he tossed them around in his hand.

What would one game hurt? Honestly. He had been doing nothing but worry about how to survive this hell why not let his guard down and have a little fun? He hadn’t ever been to a casino before, not even for his 21st birthday. Maybe he would finally see what he was missing.

Due to his lack of experience when it came to the world of gambling he simply picked the simplest option, the Slot Machine. Taking a seat in the plush chair he tugged on the lever and was stunned when it jingled happily at him. Two more coins fell down into the steel catch tray. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

[SLOT MACHINE - Round Two +0 Coins]

This time as he pulled the lever he watched with renewed interest as the colorful fruits spun and spun and spun. Some strangely giddy music played the whole while and he found himself leaning forward in anticipation. Would he win something else? What happened if he lost? He wanted to look around once more to check on the people around him, but he simply couldn’t tear his eyes away from the bright little screen and the quickly rotating fruits. He began to realize how easily an addiction to gambling could form, it was no joke.

Around and around and around they went, until finally they began to slow down. “Please, please, please..” He muttered under his breath. Taking a drink from a passing server as he did so. At last the bars quit spinning, but unfortunately there were no pairs this time around. “Oh well, one more time!” He said, patting the machine and silently wishing for luck.

[SLOT MACHINE - Round Three +2 Coins - Total of 54 Coins]

His last pull was even more electrically charged than the first two, this was his last chance to score some more coins and he desperately wished to do so. He had never once been a loser in his entire life, and he wouldn’t start now! If he could fight of a mob of stinking, cannibalistic infected he could get two fruits to match one another. The flashing lights were mesmerizing, and he found himself bobbing his head along to the silly little tune the machine played while rolling. He took a sip from the cup he had snatched earlier from the server’s tray but he couldn’t quite make out what it was.

Before he could give it another thought the machine came to a stop and two more matching fruits caused him to bounce up from his chair and raise his hands in a victorious pose. “Aw yea!”

[Belly of the Beast - Ask a Question]

Why didn’t he ever listen to his instincts? In most cases they turned out to be correct, and judging by his chronic cotton mouth and the strange setting he now found himself in he was right again. He couldn’t quite determine whether he felt comforted or more disturbed by the fact that there were others who shared in his predicament, but when the strange man began to address them via announcement any comfort he may have felt slipped quickly away.

He would need to buy his way out of here? And if he didn’t he would be, what, eaten? Sighing he lowered his chin to his chest and shook his head. If it wasn’t the infected trying to eat him, it was a bunch of casino nuts with a craving for long pig. He should never have fallen for the bright lights or the deceptive spinning fruit.

When the voice finally stopped he began to consider what it had said more carefully. So he needed to gamble for his life as well as coins. How interesting. Now most in his situation would have come up with some witty question in order to gain insight, but not Nate. “What kind of cut rate motel are you running here?!”

But without further a due he was pulled aside with no answer to his outburst, and instead placed in front of what appeared to be a nearly impossible choice.

[Choices Choices - The Young Lady]

Ice began to form within his gut as he stared at the two frightened pairs of eyes now resting squarely upon him. Whoever he chose would live, and whoever he didn’t would be killed. He could not stop himself from shaking, nor from gripping the arms of the chair he was currently tied to until his knuckles turned white. How on earth would he decide who to choose when both of their lives mattered? A young boy who was far too young to die, and a lady who appeared to have much more to do with her life than become a sacrifice to deranged minds.

His gaze fell to his shoes as he attempted to work the problem out. It wasn’t as simple as choosing a box of water over one teammates life. Gritting his teeth together he attempted to make sense of the myriad of thoughts and equations running through his mind as he tried fruitlessly to weigh one life against the other. The boy would have a lot of strength to help them, but the woman would be able to reproduce should the need ever arise. What else could they bring to the table?

“Hurry up. Tick tock!” The attendant laughed. The only thing he was certain of now was that, if he didn’t make a decision both of them would die. “The lady..” He mumbled, barely able to speak. Unlike those who may look away from the consequences of their actions Nate made eye contact with the boy as he was dragged away. He repeated that he was sorry until the very last moment before the boy was permanently removed from his vision and he was left with a mere glimpse of what rest beyond the doors.

[The Room - Ask What is in the Room]

“Where are you taking him?” He shouted after the boy. “What is in that room?” He struggled to try and see what lay beyond, to know what fate the boy had been met with because of his decision. What hell had he condemned him too because he wasn’t strong enough to get them both out of this situation? He finally turned his glare upon the attendant who was smirking down at him.

“Do you really want to know?” He asked, the tone of his voice full of amusement. Before he could open his mouth he noticed the young lady emphatically shaking her head, tears of terror welling up in her eyes. He really wanted to know, but did she already know something that he did not? Or was she simply terrified beyond all belief and not the least bit curious about the boy who died in her stead?

[Do You Really? - Nevermind, I don't need to know... - 54 Coins]

He couldn’t tear his gaze from her as she continued to shake her head and plead with him through body language. Curiosity was tearing at him from the inside out, he truly wished to know what the consequences of his actions were. He opened his mouth to push the issue but stopped before anything came out. What exactly would he do with this knowledge? Puke because of its potential horror? Harbor it forever in his memories exactly like the death of his uncle? He already knew the ramifications of his decision, the boy was dead and torturing himself was not a good enough reason to continue horrifying the life he had saved.

“Forget it…” He groaned, but was relieved to see the woman’s expression change as she was taken away. Maybe at least he could do some good to outweigh the bad he had been forced to do. He had wronged that boy, and whether he knew his true fate or not he would always regret that. “I’m sorry…” He whispered, fighting back the tears threatening to spill over his cheeks. “I’m sorry…”

This entire thing had been a nightmare, from start to finish. How could he have actually believed that a place like this, full of laughter and bliss could truly exist in a world where cannibalistic beasts were the norm. For a moment he began to wonder if he would ever truly live again, or if he would only survive.

[The Final Doors - 54 Coins]

He hardly remembered standing or being ushered through the final doors that lead him back into the casino. All he could think about was the terrified look on the boy’s face standing out in stark contrast to the relief that washed over the young lady’s as she was taken away. He already felt exhausted and was half tempted to fall upon the floor and sleep until his number was called. Maybe they would give him a swift death, or maybe they would drag him into that room where unknown horrors awaited. He didn’t know.

Regardless, he needed to regain his composure and figure out what his next move would be. Finally clearing his gaze of a self-inflicted haze he took a look at his surroundings. Many others with the same expression of resignation stood about in a daze, while others were obviously cross. Some he recognized, others he didn’t. All he knew was that this game was only just beginning, and they were all players.
