The afternoon was warm, not but hot, with a gentle breeze that managed to be refreshing without ruining all the work Zoe had put into her updo. She would have thanked the universe for giving her such a beautiful day to reunite with her friend, but she wasn't really the thankful sort.

She'd chosen a pleasant bistro uptown and sat out on the patio, where Veronica would be sure to see her as soon as she arrived. It wasn't really that she intended to eat because, honestly, what true debutante would ever be seen eating in public in the middle of the afternoon? That was such a gluttonous, low class thing to do. Instead, she'd ordered herself a large cup of coffee, her third of the day, to stave off the creeping feeling of weariness that always hit her about this time of day. Sleeping an average of three to four hours a night had it's downfalls.

Although it wasn't quite time for their meeting, Zoe had arrived early, as she always did, and was busy flipping through local news articles on her iPad. For the most part, she seemed disinterested, though every now and again she paused over something related to the peculiar 'terrorist' groups that plagued the city after hours.

Veronica arrived late, as per usual. Those who request her presence should know to wait for her; it was her subtle way of reminding everyone of her value. A value, however, that was endangered after her father's death and his will requesting that her inheritance to be controlled by her restrictive mother and step-mother. Now all she had to live off of is an allowance of five thousand dollars per month like some kind of third-world peasant.

Dressed head to toe in Chanel, the blonde arrived to the bistro and peered up from her iPhone for just a moment to see Zoe waiting for her outside at the lovely quiet patio. Outside? Ugh, life was so hard.

She arrived at the table and stood there for seventeen seconds before putting down her phone to greet her friend with a faux kiss on the cheek, careful to keep a five inch distance as to not come off to the public as a couple of lesbians.

"Zoe, it has been too long," she cooed, her tone carrying a hint of condescension for her friend. "How has life been in Destiny City? I've just been so busy with my studies and travel to London, Paris, Milan, Dubai - oh, you know how it is."

Veronica nearly waited for Zoe to speak before grabbing a passing waitress's attention. "Skinny pumpkin spice latte, two sugars and a stir of honey, and make it quick." Her attention then snapped back to her friend as the waitress departed, a fake attentive smile plastered on across her lips.

Zoe rose just enough out of her seat to return Veronica's greeting, then settled back down and crossed one leg over the other, giving her friend a clear view of her new Valentino boots.

The condescension was nothing new, but Veronica's habit of over sharing always gave Zoe more information than she could ever need to dig for, which suited her just fine. As she shared the news of her wonderful travels, Zoe watched her with a polite smile, not so wide that it might cause premature laugh lines (or you could just call it fake, because that's definitely what it was).

"Pretty much the same. I had to slum it long enough to graduate from University, to appease my father's insistence that I do something to earn my share of the inheritance." One hand raised here, dismissive. "It was almost too easy, public schools don't even try to challenge these kids." Her bright eyes swept up to watch the waitress that Veronica confronted and she found herself fighting back a smile at the way her eyes almost rolled once her friend had dismissed her. Silently, Zoe had to wonder how many pumpkin spice lattes were ordered per hour in this town. How basic.

"I was very sorry to hear about your father. How is your family taking it?" There had been rumors about Veronica's sudden reappearance, but the look on Zoe's face was all concern, even as she raised her plain, black coffee to her lips and took a long draw.

"What is it with parents and their insistence that our lifestyles must be earned?" she bemoaned. "If they did not wish for us to maintain the luxuries of our childhood, then they shouldn't have raised us in that environment." Not that Veronica would be happier with a lower-class environment. The thought of living in just a step class lower, living in the 2% instead of the 1%, sent a chill up her spine.

"As for my family is taking my father's death, Belinda...," she started. She always referred to her mother by the first name. "...is taking it just as you'd expect: dancing with glee that she was left in her ex-husband's will, even with only ten percent. She just bought a new estate in the Greek isles with her new lover." What Veronica didn't mention, however, was that her new lover was a former male classmate of Veronica's.

"Meanwhile, Maité has taken over the penthouse," she said, referring to her step-mother. "To be frank, a part of me believes they conspired against my father. They're both doing better off without him."

Except for her. Veronica was the one left with her inheritance under the joint-control of her mother and step-mother. "I miss my father. He was a good man, regardless of what the tabloids say." She appeared remorseful for a moment - just briefly - before her pumpkin spice latte arrived and she returned to her natural resting b***h face.

That one brief glimmer of Veronica's true feelings, even if they were buried so deeply that Veronica herself forgot them from time to time, made Zoe want to reach out and offer some form of comfort.

Unfortunately, public displays of weakness or caring were not socially acceptable when there could be a camera waiting to snap a photo. Zoe had been featured more than once in local papers for any sort of scandal they could pin on her - it made her wary of herself in public eye. Local tabloids were hungrier for eye-catching headlines than nationally supported papers were. And the blogs? She didn't want to even get started. Half of what she knew of Veronica's situation were from outside sources, tabloids, and speculation. The other half was from her mother.

"My mother seems to think that too, although I'm not sure if that's because she really has reason to believe it or if she enjoys the speculation." Zoe shrugged and took a long sip of her black coffee, letting the bitter taste roll over her tongue, sharp and undiluted by sugar. It was a better source of energy, without the inevitable sugar crash that all but negated the effects of the caffeine. She considered Veronica for a moment, watching her take the first sips of the pumpkin spice latte.

Even if they had been as much rivals as friends in their earlier years, the death of a close family member was something she had never experienced. The mere thought of losing her father made her uneasy.

"I'm sure you have plenty of places to escape to, but if you ever need to get away from the two of them somewhere they wouldn't look, we have our guest house."
