Quest #5: In my dreams, I was a:

Description: This is mostly an RP prompt!

Goals:

You are dreaming of what you once were. The life before all of this, and the memory is...

    - One of a huge mistake.
    - One of a great turning point in your life.
    - One of love, but it's bittersweet.
    - One of excitement, or surprise.
    - A past memory of your choice!

When you wake up, reflect a little bit on the life you can't yet return to, if you can ever return to it at all. What would you change? What would you do differently, if anything?

First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 200 words for 1 Arcade Token.

Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 400 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.

Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.

    500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens.
    600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens.
    700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens.
    800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.

Whistle While You Work: While dreamsharing technology is still in development, feel free to wake up, wander, and have a discussion in the dark with your friends about your past.

"Megan!" Who was that? The voice sounded familiar and she couldn't place it until her mother came into the room. "Phone call for you."

She took the receiver. "Hello?"

"Hi Megan," It was her dad's voice on the phone. I'm really sorry, but... you might not see me for a while, okay? You be good while I'm gone, okay? I love you." And the call ended there, abruptly. She looked up at her mother in confusion, still holding the receiver to her ear.

And she started awake. That was... a terrible thing to remember. She was five years old and her family was struggling. At this age she understood, that he was in prison because he fell in with a bad crowd while he was trying to support their family. He fell for a deal that was too good to be true, and paid for it. He was still a good guy, really, but they'd all gone through a range of feelings about it. She hadn't seen him since; after his sentence he went up to the Yukon or something to do odd jobs.

That weighed heavily on all of them. She and her brother started working right out of high school instead of applying to UBC or something like all their peers. Their whole family worked, everyone was on odd shifts and it was hard to get everyone together for... anything. Her brother would get called in, or she'd have to clopen, or her mom would need to do a double shift. Days off were like the stars, they rarely aligned. And the fighting. If someone spent some of their money on anything that wasn't necessary, ever, they'd all be at each other's throats about rent or food or bills.

But she still wondered about them. Were they safe? They lived all the way in Vancouver. She took transit to and from work because there was a bus stop at the mall and her mom and brother worked off hours and they couldn't afford insurance (or payments) for three cars. Maybe they got out. Maybe they drove out to their cousins in Abbotsford or something when the warning went out. Maybe... maybe they weren't trapped like her.

Or maybe they drove out to try and get her when everything went to s**t, maybe they tried to save her. Maybe they got infected. Maybe they rose again as undying. She shook her head violently, trying to get the thought out of her mind, but it never really went away. It just slid into the depths like some sort of insidious, spidery apparition that lurked just past her awareness only to come back and haunt her when she was alone.

And what about her dad? It'd been a month and these thorns grew like weeds, did they reach that far north already? Was he safe? Did he even know what was going on? At least... did he know what the public had been told? Was he looking for them?

She hoped not. Stay safe, dad.
