Well, it wasn't that the apocalypse was coming. Clearly it was already here, and they hadn't prepared for it early enough. Monica was gonna rectify that if she had anything at all to say about it.
There was a hardy-looking little bungalow on the corner of the street, and Monica had already determined that she was going to check it out. The problem was - well, the problem was that she opened the door and then there was nothing there. Well, sure, there were shelves. And more shelves. And pegs. A nice, clean-looking counter. A requisite staff room. That was also empty, save a smashed chair.
Nope, there wasn't a ton of useful stuff here. She needed to move onto the next spot on her checklist.
Which was a grocery store, it turned out. Monica bypassed the main store area, already accustomed to this. Back there was the staff break room - empty - and there was the supply room, cavernous and echoing. "Just gotta pick out the water," she reminded herself. There were two bottles on a shelf, but nothing else within easy reach. She could double back here later, she decided. For now she could move on.

Who cared? Monica was old hat at this by now. She sauntered into a convenience store that was becoming incredibly familiar. Wait - were there any bottles left in here? Had she already picked it clean on a previous run?
Nope. Right there. Monica huffed out a happy sigh. One, two, three, four - five more bottles for the road. This was a satisfying enough haul, she thought - in most places she was only ever able to scavenge one or two. It wouldn't be worth it to stick around. Diminishing returns, you know.
With that in mind she popped into the building next door. (Hey, Monica was not that great at expending effort.) The pile of legos in the corner was disconcertingly familiar. Oh, it was the same toy store. Well...maybe she'd missed something on her last pass through this place?
Monica dashed over, humming. (She felt pretty invincible with a fishing rod.)
"I think..." Oh! There was a bottle here after all. Monica scooped it up, and then headed out. If she'd already checked through the place once she wasn't likely to gain much by staying another time. Water: 8

Monica's bag was getting kind of full, but there wasn't anything in the next store to help it on its way. It was a computer store, she noted dully. Another branch of that other one.
Wow, a lot of these companies were really bad at spacing out their franchises. Perhaps it was just that the area near the prison wasn't really prime real estate, though. Water: 8

She shimmied between two bricks to get into the next building: the door was locked and there was a hole in the wall. This was the logical conclusion, right?
Inside was the ramshackle remains of a restaurant. Monica didn't think much of it until she spotted the bar. Ah - behind there. She had to climb up onto the counter, but hey - who didn't suffer for love? When she was behind it she pulled out an intact bottle of water, beaming. Then she hopped back over, which took a bit more effort.
Okay. Time to look elsewhere. Water: 9

Monica ruffled her own hair. She was...making progress, right? A small, charming building lurched in front of her. Of course, it was covered in blood spatters...but Monica tried to ignore stuff like that in times like these (it didn't always work).
It was, as she might've even guessed, a toy store. Monica knew what to do, though, and headed right to the back for...where was the employees' break room?
Ooh, nope. There. On the cash register shelf. Monica grabbed the bottle, reassured, and checked to ensure that it wasn't somehow a fake.
Looked good to her. Time to skedaddle. Water: 10

Of course, she should've expected the infected now following her around. "You guys just don't let up, do you?" she asked, shaking her head. Actually, it was a little scary that there were still, uh, 'living' infected. It meant that the disease was still being transmitted, and that was not a good thought.
Welp. This was why she had a fishing rod: to keep it at arm's length.
She smacked it firmly in the face, watched it begin to double back, and then remembered that she didn't want to stand around watching it.

So it was home for Monica. She hoped.
She leapt over a broken brick wall on her way back, just because it was cool. Unfortunately some waters spilled from her bag at the stunt - but Monica, she reminded herself, did not have time to double back. She had to keep moving forward.
Home. She counted her bottles. Five left? That was better than none, for sure. She put them on the counter wearily, and then headed to her cell for a cold shower. Whew.
