Anya’s day just kept getting worse and worse. Cleaning, scavenging, building, food…. And now guarding. Honestly she just wanted to curl up in a corner and nap... maybe go about with some others and not by herself. But no, her fate was apparently to go wander about by herself. She’d been directed to help with patrolling since she appeared to have free time. But she’d yet to run into another person patrolling, it was just her circling the dorms, wandering through the buildings near it and trying to find people. She’d seen blood splatters on some of the walkways… not a good sign. They weren’t completely dry which meant that they were recent…. Had there been a fight? Infected? Or just people attacking others for supplies? She took a shuddering breath and crept along the trail, trying to follow it to see if someone was in need of aid.
Normally she would have run back but something was snapping inside Anya. She was tired of being afraid all the time, of hiding… her brief spurt of courage earlier that day had been a turning point. Now she wanted to do something about this situation… even if it was only helping another. Sitting and waiting out the next 7 days in terror till potential help arrived was not going to cut it! As she peeked around the corner there was more blood pools… but no bodies. Her eyes darted around, looking at the windows of the buildings, trying to see into the shadows within the small groves that decorated everywhere on campus. No signs of movement, she let a small breath out. Safe for a moment. As she straightened up a flash of light reflecting off one of the pools caught her eye… there was something lying in it! She trotted over to see a knife lying in it. Covered in half dried blood but still whole! She looked around before bending down and grabbing it. She darted back to where she’d been and watched for a bit more… just in case it was a trap. She cut a strip off her pants and used it to try and clean the knife somewhat…. And hopped that it wasn’t infected blood and she wouldn’t catch the virus!
Smiling a bit and slightly emboldened by her find, she continued on her patrol. Maybe it was too quiet, maybe it was too dark, and maybe she was alone... but she had a weapon now. Something to defend herself with! It was amazing how much a small weapon boosted her confidence. Confidence that was suddenly shaken when she realized it was too dark. She stopped and looked around, one of the light poles was flickering near her… but beyond that was darkness. No lights. Her hand gripped the knife’s handle and she took a shaking breath as she retreated. Before she got too far she heard a sound from within the darkness. It was a clatter of something falling over. She stopped and whirled around, eyes scanning the darkness. What had toppled it? The blood splatters she’d been following entered it… could it be an infected? Or a wounded person?
She wanted to flee but instead she took a halting step towards the darkness. No more fleeing from nothing. Only if she was actually in trouble would she flee. She repeated this over in her head, promising herself this. Wanting to not be a cowardly mouse anymore.
She entered the shadows slowly, letting her eyes adjust as she crept forward, knife out in one hand. There was a light scuffling sound, like something shifting and moving across other items. Her eyes darted towards a place between two buildings, where the shadows deepened even further into total darkness. The shifting sounds were coming from there, but when she got closer they stopped. Anya stopped moving as well, something was in there… Her heart hammered against her breast as she waited for something to jump out.
“Mew?” She heard and almost jumped with shock at the sudden sound. Small flashes of green close to the ground could be seen as a cat walked towards her. She let her breath out explosively and crouched down to offer a hand to the cat.
“It’s just a cat.” She said softly with a laugh. Just a cat…
The cat had long black hair, dusty from lack of brushing and too much rolling in the dirt. Its bright green eyes looked at her as it mewed again before rubbing against her offered hand. She petted it for a while, enjoying the simple pleasure that petting a cat gives. No danger, just pet a purring cat. No fear, just fluffy kitty. Eventually she sighed and stood up to leave. She’d spent enough time out here, time to head back and report her findings. The cat followed her all the way back, knowing that where humans where, there were pets.. and maybe food.
