Hats off to my bud AshWufei for building his own effects, hell I'm still using a fuzz box I built back in high school from a schematic I found in a amplifier handbook (that i checked out of the school library, claimed to have lost, and payed the 3.95 coverprice for!).
Anyway, what does everyone think about these cheaper effects pedals that are now available? Most Danelectro pedals sell for, Behringers for $20 and Rogue makes a few cheapers pedals too. I curently have a Danelectro flangue and a Rogue volume/wah and I am happy with both. The only other effects I really desire are a delay and a nice overdrive, which i'll probably end up building.

I've known for a while that cheap effects don't make me happy, but I've recently discovered the benefits of buying quality gear.... it's a big difference when you have a Boss DS-1 compared to a Zoom. Biiiiig difference.

It works, and it doesn't sound great, but it does a job. The thing about Behringer is that most of thier upper end stuff is s**t. I've heard some of the mixers in the upper end range and they're terrible. The microphones they make sound like a** and the compressors/other rack gear.. ugh.... don't even get me started. I guess if they make decent stuff for guitars then they get a point or two, but for anything else I boycott them exclusively.

It's a reallly crazy bluesy tone similar to steve vai's from Tender Surrender.

Well, I'm quite fond of my BOSS BD-2 (Blues Driver), and I got it for a magnificent price ($30, normal is $80-$90). Nice bluesy grit, but not great for heavier stuff. I have my custom TS-808 boosting a Bazz Fuss for that!. I also love my BOSS RV-5(?), which is their Digital Delay/Reverb. It's an older version and it sounds fantastical. Got it for free, too.

Just a heads up, cheap effect pedals aren't really that good for long, or at all. Especially Rogue. If you want good pedals for a good price, look at DOD.
I have a digitech RP50, it's a stompbox with multiple modeled effects. And I have the DOD Flashback Fuzz (once known as the American Fuzz) and the DOD Vibrothang. Both are great and I got them for 40 bucks each (Americano) and you can just get a cheap coupler jack to hook them both together.
Cheap is not good, unless you want something to learn on. But nice job building your own effects man.

The Vibro-Thang and DOD fuzz pedals are good, but I have some issues with DOD these days. DOD has screwed me a couple times. The nuts that hold the jacks in tend to loosen. They did this when I was playing shows, making my whole sound cut out. After a few times, I decided to lose the DOD.
Also, whatever mechanism which turns the pedal on/off is not one of those Electro-Harmonix-style big steel buttons, it's some kind of solenoid or whatever the hell it is, some other kind of dubious POS. When this malfunctions, your pedal is only operable in one position; either on, or off. Can't switch.
DOD distortions, for the most part, sound kind of canned to me. I like their cleaner effects. They make a great stereo flanger, for instance. I also own a DOD envelope filter, which I bought for insanely cheap because - get this - the nuts fell off and got lost, and the solenoid thing or whatever the ******** it is got stuck in the "on" position. Whatever cthonic god of the Underworld in charge of smiting DOD pedals that have sinned... whoever he is, he laid a double helping of punishment on this poor little pedal. I'll just have to eventually get around to fixing it. If I buy a Qtron or something in the meantime...
I agree that the Danelectro pedals are questionable - use em, but don't ever trust em! I own a Wasabi distortion, which makes my guitar sound like a choice between five different kinds of s**t (sometimes like s**t with a tape echo)... don't ever buy a Dan-O-Wah. A plastic foot pedal is a shitty shitty feature on any wah - extremely fragile.
So yep, for clean stuff, I'd consider using a DOD. Beware of the clicking noise when you switch the pedal on! This has ruined many a track.
On the positive side, DOD has made many limited-run pedals which are quite unique, like the Buzz Box, Juice Box, Gonkulator... these are all worth checking out.

AshWufei Argus - aside from the broken part, how did the DOD Envelope Filter sound? Not bad, kind of like a low-rent Qtron - not sure if you ever listen to the Grateful Dead, but you'll hear the tron in full effect when Jerry solos(soloed) a lot of the time. Unless you're going after that sound, it doesn't have too many applications in most music. The DOD envelope filter was always touted as a classic bass effect though, where you can get that Funkadelic kind of sound, sounds totally sick combined with a pop/slap style. Another thing- I noticed that when I used the effword in my last post in this thread, I got a bunch of *** - type stuff, though I wasn't logged in. My comments didn't get modded, did they? I just want to know if I should watch my language, if it's a guild thing I understand.
