He'd been eying it for sometime now since they entered Zone 1's territory. The radio tower loomed ahead like a beacon of hope, and now that his main duties were over, all he could think of was getting into the radio control station and trying to call for help. And in the worst scenario... at least he would be able to scavenge for some useful equipment there. He had been holding on to this set of wires for quite some time now, but there can never be too many can there?
The infected that trudged around the entrance made that quite difficult to approach it, but he'd seen students look more listless than them before. The lack of presence he had, combined with the act of walking about like there was nothing out of order, eventually got him past the entrance and up the radio tower.
The room was filled with hundreds of communications lines, and Peter barely knew where to begin. The blinking lights here and there at least gave him some sense of hope that something here might just work at all...

There was a flashing red light next to one of the lines, and the man picked up the line eagerly.
"This is prerecorded emergency broadcast. If you are listening to this, you are in critical danger. Find the nearest shelter immediately and hide until further authorities notify you. Do not attempt to contact local authorities. Do not leave your house. This is not a drill."
A per-recorded message... that was pretty disappointing, he thought. He did take note however, of the distinguishing between further authorities and local authorities. They were acting separately now? Could he even trust any of them at all then?

Peter held onto the line, waiting to see if there was anything else to be heard. The message simply repeated itself, puzzling him about its meaning even further.

By the third loop of the message the man decided to put the line down and move on to the next one. Perhaps he might be able to establish contact with someone.

Instead the same message was being repeated on this line too. Peter moved a few steps away from the red light to the next station. Hopefully these were wired to somewhere else.

There was something on this line other than the message, and he could definitely hear someone speaking on the other end of it. Peter was getting worked up as he strained his ear to listen, but he couldn't make out anything intelligible from the muffled sounds.

He began to fiddle with the wires desperately, but now there was only static.

The buzzing continued, much to his shame as an engineering professor. In a desperate move, he unplugged and plugged the wire back in, hoping for something to work.

The line had instead picked up the pre-recorded message again, causing him to unplug the line in frustration.

More static poured through the line, as he man tried to regain the previous connection.

He could hear some footsteps coming, but he couldn't leave now. Not when he hadn't accomplished anything.

He was about to attempt reconnecting at another line when the voice came back through again, still in its muffled state.

"Hello?" he tried to speak to the other person on the line for the first time. The muffled noises suddenly became clearer, and he could her the other person talking back.
"Hello? This is-." and the line dropped dead.
