Freshman Quest: Healing 101
Quote:
Charlie felt it would be beneficial to show the newbies some basic medical techniques, hopefully to keep you alive a little longer! Deciding it would be better to actually show them in a (somewhat) more sanitary environment than the Dorms, so this quest takes place in the Health Department (their make-shift Infirmary). There are a few lingering staff and helpers around who show you the ropes.

Quest Notes:
- You can do this quest as a group if you'd like! Just roll the steps as usual.
- There is a 300 word minimum word count for each person in this quest.

Step One: Learning the Layout
- Roll 3d6 in one post OR 1d6 in three separate posts. RP your character inspecting these areas. (if you roll multiples you can either Re-roll or say they inspect that area super closely)
  • 1: Pull out a drawer and inside you find their supply of band-aids and bandages. It seems like a lot but in reality it would not last long if things really went down.
  • 2: A locked Cabinet filled with medicines. The staff tell you that only one person in their group holds the key to it, and he is quite the cranky customer. They say just in case something happens to the holder there is a hidden spare key somewhere.
  • 3: You look down at a metal table with shiny instruments piled on top. Really to you they look like mini torture devices, best not hang around for long. In reality they are emergency items for surgical needs.
  • 4: You instead the tables that the staff have covered in white linens. There are some mysterious stains on them, red tinted.
  • 5: Neat! There is a working height and weight scale the team had moved into the department. Good to know!
  • 6: A small room with a door off to one side. Inside is a simple desk and a few chairs, clearly a private area for meetings if you'd rather keep things hush hush. There is also paperwork on top of the desk. One of them is a log explaining what had been used and who had been there and when.

Step two: Using Supplies
- Not wanting to waste their limited medical supply on trainees, instead they improvise using similar objects to practice with.
- If doing this as a group feel free to 'practice' on each other, if doing this solo you may say you are using a random NPC to test things on!
- Roll 1d6 and match your responses below.
- Please roll twice! So do two of them below. (If you roll the same number feel free to re-roll)

  • 1: Fake Bandages! Using some clean socks, pretend to be bandaging up a part of your 'patients' body that might have been wounded. Use clips to clip the socks in place.
  • 2: Using a bottle filled with water from the tap, pretend you are cleaning a wound! Remember you would never actually use the trainted water on a real wound, but this is pretend. In a real situation you would use isopropyl alcohol or something like it.
  • 3: Taking a needle and thread, sew up a hole in the provided tattered clothing. Not only does this show how to make-shift sew a wound, it also patches some clothing holes! Yay for being useful!!
  • 4: On a table is an actual knife. They ask you to take the knife and cut up some of the canned peaches nearby. Why? They state it's another practice but i think they actually just need help with food prep.... Handling the knife comes with a warning of 'If you cut yourself you sew yourself up.'
  • 5: Another station leads towards the earlier metal table with the surgical equipment, there is a note on top that says 'DO NOT TOUCH.' Oh, Ok. Easiest example ever!
  • 6: As a lesson in maintaining a healthy environment, they make you clean down the entire room.

Rewards:
- This quest is considered complete once every player inside has rolled all the times and made the minimal 300 word count each!
- For Course Credits: Take the very first number and the very last number you rolled in this thread and add them together. If its an even number, divide it by two and thats how many points you get. If its an odd number, add +1 and then divide by two.
- Example: I rolled a 2 and a 4. 2+4 = 6. 6 / 2 = i earned 3 credits for this quest.
- Example 2: 1 rolled a 1 and a 2. 1+2=3. Oops! Odd number! So add a 1 to make it an even number. 3+1=4. 4 / 2 = I earned 2 credits for this quest.
- Max credits possible to earn in this quest is 6.
- The numbers you add are your personal numbers, meaning YOU rolled them. If you have multiple people in a thread, they use their own first and last numbers they personally rolled.

Kammy could appreciate the need for learning first aid, and would be happy to increase her clerical skills so she could rez people and give heals. However, you kinda needed to see what you were doing, and since she couldn't, well, it was a moot point.

Still, she listened intently as they told her about the locked cabinet and where the keys were located, and then pointed her towards the table filled with instruments. Her hands sought each individual one, feeling out the difference between the metal and wondering if it was a wise idea to even use these. They felt pretty sharp.

Hitsu had been in the Health Department before, considering her major before the world decided to end. Most if not all of the things she saw about the room were familiar to her at least in passing and she knew what they were used for. There was a distinct comfort in knowing that she might be able to help someone, truly, if they were injured. It was also a great idea to try and train others, so that they might know how to help others on the field or in the infirmary as well.

Noticing Kammy was already present, speaking with someone, she offered a little wave to her. She was glad to see someone else here to help. To herself,

She glimpsed the surgical supplies and winced to herself a little. Hopefully... Hopefully they would not need to use those. Did they even have a way to put someone under if they did?

Hitsu was quietly opening drawers as she came to cabinets, so that in the event that she might actually need to grab something swiftly she'd remember where the particular item that she needed had been stored. The one she opened containing bandaging had her counting in her head, and running guesstimates on just how far such a supply could go. It could last them a while.... Or... If someone was seriously hurt they would use an alarming amount of it in a short time. She prayed for the former.

She was pretty unimpressed by the scale, because she was pretty ******** sure that their weight wasn't going to matter much these days, let alone how tall they all were. What was the point?

Kammy would have waved to Hitsu, but sadly she didn't even realize the girl had even waved to her. Though she could hear her rummaging around in cabinets, moving items to where she would need them the most. Maybe Hitsu had done this before?

She was then given what it felt like where some socks and a clasp. a metal object and some twine, soon realizing it was a thread a needle, along with some very tattered clothing judging form the holes she could felt. She guessed it was her job to sow it up.

It was difficult to do so, having to use touch alone to feel out where she should thread the needle. She frowned, concentrating hard on her task at hand, though to anyone watching the stitches looked dismal and no where near where they needed to be. When she thought she was almost done, her hands slipped on the needle and dropped both thread and clothing with it.

"Dam...." She bent down, searching for it around the floor, then grabbed onto what she..was pretty sure was clothing. It had a hole in it at any rate so she sowed it up. Straitening, she reached out in front of her. "Hitsu, you there?" Upon feeling her presence (or accidentally poking her a few times) she placed a sock on her arm, and then clamped it to her sleeve.

There, bandaging was done.

Hitsu was sewing up her own piece of clothing by the time that Kammy had come over with her makeshift bandaging. She knew well enough that surgical needles and dissolving stitches would be different from her task now, but she worked with a well practiced ease.

She could sew well; her mother had taught her. Plus, she'd had a lot of practice with brothers that tended to get themselves into plenty of adventures that resulted in their clothing - and sometimes bodies - dealing with considerable wear and tear.

Laughing softly as Kammy prodded her, she shifted her arm to accommodate the 'bandage' and examined her work once she'd finished.

"That's really impressive for someone who can't see what they're doing," she said, giving an approving little pat to one of Kammy's shoulders since she couldn't actually see her smile.
