Description: Malls are big, and there's more than enough room for every Mall Rat to make their home there, and your home can always use improvements! Collect some supplies, find a safe space to sleep through the night, and, well. Make yourself at home away from home.
Goals:
Step 1: MAKE IT HABITABLE. You as a survivor need to find something that will work as a bed, something to store your personal items in, and a way to get some privacy for changing. (No washrooms, because no store in the mall has enough space to dedicate an employee-only bathroom). That and people keep taking your furniture to help reinforce the barricades... Looks like it's time to replace everything again.
Roll 1d10. If even, you succeed. If odd, don't worry! Just roll again till you get even. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 2: MAKE IT DEFENSIBLE. Use any loose items you can find to protect the front of the store you've set up in. While most of the mall is safe, there are some shops that aren't, and you've got to prepare for the worst.
Roll 2d4 until they match. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT DEFENDABLE. With another survivor-- played by a player or one you NPC-- check the strength of your defenses.
Both roll 1d10. The higher roll determines the outcome. If you are NPCing, the first roll is yours, the second roll is the NPC's. If the barricades stay up, you get 1 bonus Arcade Token for completing the quest.
Otherwise move on to step 4!
Step 4: MAKE IT LIVABLE. There is an IKEA in the mall, and that means you get to raid it for furniture! ...Easier said than done, though.
Find the kind of furniture you want! Feel free to just RP it out and pick what you want! Escape the labyrinth: Roll 2d6 till they match. Find the boxed version you need to put together: Roll 1d20 till you get an even number. Put the furniture together: Roll 1d20 till a 15 or higher.
If you have to roll more than 5 times total for this step, consider it done! Congratulations!
First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.
Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.
Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.
500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens. 600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens. 700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens. 800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.
Whistle While You Work: You can absolutely work on living quarters with someone else, even if you don't intend to stay with them. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but it does mean you get good company!

The first place Sam tried to set up home base, there was already a man camped out on the premium, comfy, display size bed in the center of the store. She'd tried to take up residence on one of the smaller chairs because they were convenient, but he'd chased her out without much regard for her health and sanity.
So much for that plan, really. She'd have to find somewhere else to camp out.

The second place she tried out seemed like it was fine, for a while. It had some sleeping bags she could stack up and sleep on, and some stuffed animals that would make great pillows. What more could a girl ask for?
The problem came just a half hour after she'd started to set up shop. She noticed an awful smell coming from the back of the store. Upon investigation...well. It was better left unsaid. Just know that Sam lost a little more faith in humanity after it all.
She ditched out to find somewhere else after that.

Goldilocks had some s**t right, honestly. The third place was just right. It had less hall-facing windows than the other places, which she was certain would make it more defensible. And, most importantly, it had novelty pillows strewn across the floor that she could pile into a makeshift bed. She stole a blanket from another store when it's resident wasn't paying attention and she was golden. She could be perfectly comfortable in this little fort.

Just having a bed wasn't good enough. While being comfortable was important to her sanity, she also needed to be safe. That meant building up her security.
At first it felt like there wasn't much around to help her out. There were the novelty pillows, some boxes, and some stands. She tried halfheartedly to come up with some kind of plan, but if she was being honest she had no idea what she was doing. The only thing she was positive of was that she wasn't going to stop anyone with a furry pillow that said home sweet home.
She'd have to do some planning.

In the end, her defense plan was simpler than she'd expected. She emptied a few of the display shelves and carefully shoved them together in the front of the store, leaving only the barest opening for her to get in and out if she needed to. It would be easy enough to close the opening with a quick shove.
She added things that made noise, like rattling novelty toys and empty cans around the floor near the shelves, that way if something happened while she was asleep she'd hear it and wake up. Anything more than that, unfortunately, wasn't possible with what she had available.

[extra token]
She called over a random person to test her defenses when they were done. The man, hardly seeming surprised, pushed against the shelves lightly. When they didn't budge, he pushed harder, seemingly surprised at the effort. The shelves moved, but the noise makers around them rattled noisily.
Her alarm system worked.
Sam pushed back against the shelves and the man, stopping his advancement. It was hard work that made her arms ache slightly, but it would work out well enough. She had something between her and the bad guys, and that could be the difference between life and death.

After careful consideration she decided that she didn't want to sleep on just pillows. She needed something that could serve as a bed but wouldn't be too big.
To Ikea she went.
Getting into the store seemed so easy. It was almost relaxing to peruse the options. It seemed like she was shopping for her home, not for her make shift safety base. She could almost pretend.
In the end she settled on a lightweight futon sort-of contraption. That was the easy part. The hard part was figuring out where it was and getting back out.

How could Ikea be so big? It felt like it was bigger than the mall itself. Maybe it was like those tents in Harry Potter. Magically enhanced to be bigger on the inside.
Was that a door?
No. Only another bathroom. She wasn't even sure it was the same bathroom. Could the store have more than one? Was it really that big?

If Ikea were the desert, and the exit were water, Sam would have died ten times over by now. She felt like she'd been walking around forever. Maybe they could just lead the undying here and leave them lost to wander around til they just died for good.

Somehow, miraculously, Sam found both the box she needed and the exit without killing herself. In comparison, the hell of putting it together seemed almost pleasant. At least she could follow instructions. Kind of.
So it was a little wobbly. Who cared? At least she could sleep on it.
