As of late, staying still had begun to grate on Lafayette's nerves. He had spent most of the last several years catatonic, and now... now... what now? Lafayette growled and pounded the earth harder with each stride. Running. The only thing that felt right now was running. Running as far as he could. From what? Lafa shook the thought from mind, slamming his hoof down on a sapling, crushing it underfoot. Satisfaction roared through his veins and he tried to ignore it. Tried to ignore the ache in his muscles and the burning in his lungs. Tried to ignore everything but the ground below him. That was the only thing that mattered. The ground below him.

When Lafayette stopped by a creek, he was nearly frothing at the mouth. Why had he started running the first place? He cleaned his lips of the froth and tried to remember. He was watching his son... his son... ... watching his son speak to his father and... and suddenly he was just... running. Like if he didn't run then his legs would run without him. It was new and frightening but more frightening than the urge to run was the idea of not running.

Gods damn it all he was no good at this philosophy bullshit. He knew himself about as well as he knew his son. Which was to say not at all. Lafayette trampled his reflection in the water, cursing and spitting all the while. Maybe he should just take off. Give his legs a rest and fly… somewhere. Anywhere. He could fly across the lands – fly to a different land and start over. New land, new name, new… new family. Lafayette tried to feel ashamed but… the idea just sounded so good and so… clean. Like he’d be washing himself of everything that he’d done… and why not start over? Would his children miss him? He didn’t know where his daughters had gone once they grew up – didn’t even really know their names. And Lucian… Lucian may as well be a stranger.

A stranger who looks just like his mother.

Lafayette crushed his skull with one decisive hoof through the water’s surface. He wanted to feel ashamed but he just felt… angry.
