BEYOND THE BARRICADES
At Clearview it is customary to keep the doors and windows of unused apartments barricaded against outside threats. Sometimes these barricades fall, sometimes they just get... moved. Either way, they need to be checked on and strengthened regularly.
Quote:
Step One - Choose a Material
There are all sorts of scavenged bits of metal and wood strewn around the complex. Your first job is to gather them up and bring them where they need to be.

Roll 1d8 to see which material you will be using.

  1. sheet metal
  2. bed frames
  3. random wood
  4. mysterious chests full of documents
  5. plastic laundry bins
  6. desks
  7. chairs
  8. bookcases

If completing this quest in a group, each person should roll for their own material.

Step Two - Barricade!
Once you have chosen a material, it's time to get barricading! Roll 1d20 per post until you have rolled a cumulative 30 in Barricade Effectiveness Points(tm).

If you are completing this quest in a group, you may add all of your rolls together for Step Two.

If you complete this quest and write over 200 words, Zelda will reward you with two cocktail umbrellas the next time she sees you! Please claim them in this thread using the faction quest point claim form located here.

Perhaps he was getting a little paranoid... John had felt uncomfortable in the old apartment complex from the beginning, with it's long corridors and empty rooms, all the synthetic, processed things that reminded him what life had been like in the city. It had never quite been his world, even when it was alive. But with the recent wall collapsing issues, worrying about security on top of that discomfort was like rubbing a raw blister.

He made his rounds solo this time, just an old man putting his old mind at ease. Walking around the inside perimeter, he checked doors and windows. He tugged at piles of debris just to be sure it was secure. Not much had changed since the last time he had been around, but any minor sign of wear could be signalling a more dangerous vulnerability.

In one apartment on the first floor, there was a crack starting to form in the large living room window. Not a worry now, but John wasn't about to leave it the way it was. Good thing the family that lived there had a thing for grand headboards... He was able to drag some decent wood out of the main bedroom, and plenty of additional materials from the bunkbeds in the second bedroom.

Mr. Nordskov started with the headboard from the master bedroom. It was a good flat surface, heavy enough to form a wall against the cracked window. It wouldn't hold on it's own though, he would need to find some props.

The footboard was next to go up, a second layer of heavy wood. If he had any nails on him it would have been nailed down, but John would have to make due with what he got. For a minute he thought about taking down some doors and using them as additional barriers, but that bedframe was better quality than any doors that may have existed in the entire building.

It was a bit of a struggle, but John managed to drag the entire set of twin bunkbeds out of the second room, and prop it against the existing structure. Rotating the bed perpendicular to the wall, it would provide more resistance to anything seeking to push it's way into the room.

Finally, the old man made one last furniture rearrangement in the room. Pushing the couch into position, the bunkbeds were now braced firmly against the barricade, extra secure now that the couch was bracing it against the room's opposite wall. Good luck pushing THAT one in before they could nail it down.

With his mind already feeling more at ease, Mr. Nordskov moved onto the next room for his checks.

((Quest thread recycling go! Bedframes take two.))

Bruised and aching, Mr. Nordskov was unable to rest soundly at the apartments. It hurt to sit, it hurt to lay down and try to sleep. His mind raced. After the day's events he felt even more uncertain of how their own defenses stood. There were people out there who were armed, fiercely so, what would stop them from just coming over and taking whatever they wanted, if they decided they wanted it?

What was to stop them from blasting down what they didn't want? What was to stop them from blasting away rivals, opposition, or even just mouths they couldn't feed?

The old man got up with a groaning sigh, and pain or no pain, started another lap of their barricades.

Things were fairly secure. In the night there were no noises, the old man couldn't hear any rustlings from inside, nor the groans from infected outside. He checked the sections that had been recently repaired, and gave extra time checking areas that hadn't. Finding a weak spot, he heaved a mattress off it's bed in the side room and propped the metal frame up against the wall. Then the mattress went back on to keep it secured.

Boxsprings. Not the most sturdy building materials, but they leant good weight to an existing structure. Propped diagonally near a wall, it would add extra stability. The weight of them made the old man's chest stab with pain, but so long as his body was working, he would keep working it. Pain now was better than extra vulnerability later. He couldn't afford to sit there and lick his wounds while there were so many who were outright incapacitated.

The old man winced, leaning against the wall, taking a few shallow breaths. He had to pace himself.

Finally the structure was shored up with some heavy frames. It took John half an hour to get the heavy wooden bed over to where it needed to be, but it would be worth it. He wished he had a hammer and nails. Hell, he wished he had a backhoe, a hunting rifle, and a warm summer's afternoon where he could simply sit and down a beer or two. Things had been hard back then, but rental equipment had rarely been a matter of life and death, and hunting had been for sport and sustenance rather than outright survival. Things had changed greatly in the past month.

Wiping pained sweat off his brow with one meaty forearm, John made his way back through the darkness to his room. Maybe he could get some rest before the sun rose.
