Quest #3: Do you smell that? Or is it just me?: Description: There's no easy way to say this... So...Okay. While there is running water, most people are a little phobic of it. There's no way to get water hot, and frankly, all the soap dispensers have been vandalized and hijacked a long time ago.
Yeah, that's right. Everyone stinks, and you need to cope with the unwashed masses surrounding you. Yikes.
Goals:
Step 1: SCAVENGE THE PARTS TO MAKE A MASK.
You need a mask that can cover your nose and mouth to use when the smell really gets bad. Unfortunately, all of the fancy gas and plaguedoctor masks are locked away behind the Arcade's prize counter. You're going to have to get crafy and make one. Good thing there are lots of clothes stores around!
Roll 1d8. If odd, you succeed. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 2: SCAVENGE THE PARTS TO BLOCK THE SMELL.
Wearing cloth over your nose and mouth will only help you out so much. It's time to get in touch with your inner tree-hugging hippy and embrace the thought of... potpourri. You're pretty sure you've seen both a florist and a tea shop somewhere in this mall.
Roll 2d8 until they match. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER.
It's time to assemble your mask.
Roll 1d20 until you get a 10 or lower. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.
Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.
Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.
500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens. 600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens. 700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens. 800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.
Whistle While You Work: Did you know that it's possible to become "nose blind" to something if you smell it for a prolong period of time? When in doubt, grab a buddy and see if they can smell what you smell, or let them question your taste in potpourri. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but you know what they say: whoever smelt it dea- hey! Where are you going?

Megan was always vaguely aware that everyone would begin to stink with no access to clean water. She just wasn't aware of the smell itself; she worked at EB, after all, where half the customers had some pretty... scents. Ranging from con funk to heavy perfume to AXE Body Spray, she'd already gotten uncomfortably close and personal with most unpleasant smells and learned to deal. Hell, she'd probably be able to stroll right through the cologne-filled Abercrombie without wrinkling her nose. The smell of the other Mall Rats really didn't register to her nose, it just got gradually worse and worse without her noticing. She saw other people's looks of disgust as they walked the place, sure, but she wasn't one of them.
At least, until she got her new costume. It smelled a little musty when she put it on, but the sudden change of stimuli lit up all the receptors in her nose and now she could smell everything. Ugh, what a stink. Everything was BO except her bed, which just smelled like warehouse because she’d plundered it from IKEA. Clearly she’d need to do something to help her readjust again.
First place to go? A store with children’s clothing. Not a lot of her fellow Rats would fit them, so they should be reasonably clean, right?

Upon arrival at the nearest store, however, she was promptly reminded that even if the clothes didn’t fit, people would find other uses for them. Like rags and such. The store was mostly plundered. She sighed and plodded to the debris-strewn tables, hoping to find something she could tear up and use as a mask. The factory smell was infinitely preferable to the gross stench. Surely something would come up? A T-shirt? Hanky? Anything?

She put one on her face to test it out, only to find that the pungent stench was stronger than she thought. While she did get a goof whiff of the clean fabric, relief was very temporary. The stink still managed to get through, eventually. Ugh. What now? Maybe she could fill it with something and sort of… sandwich it between the masks? Maybe if she unbraided the straps and folded each one in half with something pleasant-smelling in the fold. That might work! She dropped the scissors back into the drawer and rolled it shut before she left, purely out of habit.

Where would she easily find something that smelled nice, though? There was a florist in the mall, sure, but it’s been a month. All the flowers probably wilted out all their petals and everything already. Where else? Teavana? Maybe? They kept all their stuff in airtight containers, right? As wasteful as it would be, the tea smell would be so much better than the rancid stink wafting all over the mall. Megan headed off that way, hoping she might find something palatable there.

The tins were kind of strewn around, so she stacked up all the containers that hadn’t been left open. Let’s see here… Earl Grey, passion tango, pineapple kona pop, maharaja chai, orange blossom, that nasty Oprah chai... Jasmine dragon pearls?? She grabbed the tin out of her pile so fast. This was the expensive stuff. She rattled the tin before she got her hopes up and, sure enough, she could hear the faint rustling of the rolled leaves. She popped it open and got a face full of jasmine. Oh man. Well, since she was here…
She dug around for a scoop and pilfered one of those sealed tins, filling it to the very top with the delightful little dried balls and cramming the lid on it. This… this was for after everything was over. As for the masks, she got one of those little baggies and scooped in a generous amount. That would last her a while. She made sure to seal it back up and put it back on the shelf when she was done. When this was over maybe she’d be able to get her hands on more.

Time to assemble everything. There was a stapler on the counter, so she used that to secure the sides of each mask before pouring some of the tea leaves into the opening she left at the top. She re-braided the straps quickly, eager to try out her new masks. She would not be defeated by the Mall Rat smell! Even though she was probably going to get used to it again soon whether she did this or not. It was just to make the process more bearable, anwyay.

On her first attempt, several of the leaves rolled out of gaps in the mask. Dammit. She grabbed the stapler again to reinforce the seam. This one seemed to hold together decently. Let’s see how well it holds up when she’s wearing it.
She tied it back and took a tentative sniff. All jasmine. Perfect. This would have to stay until she got used to the mall’s powerful smell again. Maybe she’d keep them for the next time she earned a new costume.
