"Race you!" she had laughed all the way back from the very first floor. Now even Mel knew how to make a good time of starting off a sort-of patrol, which was why running into Lorena in the middle of her trek toward the staircase was awesome. The poor woman had agreed to join her and, alas, Mel was in a relatively good mood.
A good mood that lasted all of five flights of stairs before she came to a grinding halt on the landing between the fifth and sixth floors, winded and clearly way too drained to make it all the way up to the penthouse floor by way of running. She wasn't entirely sure where Lorena was, so she hollered down the stairs and hoped the woman was actually on her tail.
"I'm up here!" she called. "Once you catch up we can just walk the rest of the way up!"

“Running is dangerous!” Lorena called as the girl shot up the stairs in a flurry. Lorena sighed softly; it was dangerous running u the stairs like that. She on the other hand took her time to make her way up the stairs as she heard her partner slow down at some point either exhausted from her run, another reason not to run up the stairs, or something had happened to her. Lorena decided to hurry just a bit faster in case something had happened to the poor girl.
“I’ll be there in a minute!” She called back; pleased to know Pomelo was now waiting for her. Once she reached the same floor, still breathing okay but her breath had sped up a bit she smiled. “Alright then, shall we?” Lorena began the slow climb up.

She offered Lorena a still energetic smile despite being seated and still catching her breath. Mel was usually full of energy so this wasn't that bad. When Lorena stepped past her she shot up out of her seat and made sure to catch up, clinging to one of the woman's arms along the way.
"Lorena," she started to ask as they hit the sixth floor. A thought had come to her as her legs, which already felt like jelly and were burning, started to ache a little. "Can you imagine living in a normal world with no elevators like this?"

Glancing at the arm the girl had attached herself too, Lorena smiled. “Hm, I think we’d be a lot more spread out since people can barely make it up two flights of stairs without dying.” She chuckled. “It would be a very odd world and I do hope ours fixes itself up soon.” The thought made her a little sad. “I need to find my husband at some point, he ran off and disappeared when everything happened.” She still couldn’t believe he’d leave her here by himself.

It wasn't an entirely comforting answer, but Mel always appreciated honesty over anything else. She bobbed her head a little as she processed the idea, but when talk of family came up she loosened her grip a bit and straightened herself out so she could reach across Lorena's shoulders and give her a little something of a hug.
"Yeah. I hope this all kind of just passes, and when it does that you find your husband," she said softly, thoughts of her own family coming to mind briefly. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes at only that, and she wiped them away in a hurry so as not to worry Lorena. "I haven't heard from my family either, but I'm hoping they're alright. My parents are troopers, and my baby sister..."
A tear slipped past and trailed down her cheek. And then another, then another. "Ugh. I keep telling myself that crying won't fix anything but sometimes, y'know?"

“Thank you.” Lorena appreciated the sentiment, made her feel a whole lot more positive. When she saw that the younger girl was crying, Lorena put an arm around her shoulder and squeezed. “Don’t worry about it, plenty of people made it to safety. They’re probably wondering where you ran off to!” She was trying to make light of the situation, she didn’t want her to cry and so changed the subject.
“At least cleaning is getting done nice and easy with so many of us around! That’s always a bonus.”

She sniffled and gave a nod, finding a bit of comfort in the hug and Lorena's words. Mel always held onto that small sliver of hope that her family was...somewhere, alive and surviving like she was. And it helped when she imagined how her parents would actually scold her for running off.
But the change of subject was welcomed, and Mel wiped at the tears furiously until the only evidence of them was the slightest of puffiness in her eyes, and she tried to smile. "It helps curb boredom," she said as they cleared the next floor. "My cleaning duties were only once a week before, and sometimes I ignored them 'cause Netflix."
All those marathons were but a memory now, and dwelling on them would probably bring about those tears so she quickly switched gears. "What'd you used to do for fun?"

Lorena nodded, agreeing that these tasks kept their minds from becoming bored and as such causing more trouble than was needed.
“I was a housewife so I cleaned, I guess, for fun? I’m not sure that makes much sense. I cooked two, I didn’t go out much or have many friends.” Her home life kept her busy enough, cleaning and cooking. “I do have a degree in pastry making though, that as fun.” It’s why Hurby had fallen in love with her after all. “Maybe I’ll go back to work once this is all over, help Hurby with the bills and such. This event makes me feel like I need to be doing more.”

The idea of having a degree in making sweets was intriguing to Mel, and it probably showed on her face when she perked up at mention of it. "So you know how to make all those delicious cakes and stuff we all see on TV on those cooking shows?" she asked, a little bug-eyed and excited about the idea of making friends with someone who had such a skill. Not that she would make friends with someone just for that; Lorena was a nice woman, and the idea of her not having much of a social life was kind of sad. Sure, the age difference between the two of them was big but that wasn't any reason to keep a friendship from developing.
"Yeah, I'd probably try a little hard in school once we're out of here," she commented on the last thought. "Assuming we do get out of here. I like to think so, I mean there's nothing wrong with hoping..."
