Akane turned the key over in her hand as she made her way over to the food storage unit she’d been told to head to. As a freshman she’d been given this packaging task because a few incidents had occurred and they wanted to avoid any further incidents. The task eerily reminded her of her parents, her mother had been a little more than obsessed about food packaging and making sure everything was in order when it came to food. Her mother had had the best food hygiene she had ever seen around; restaurants would have loved having her if packing food was an actual job.

Turning the key in the lock and entering, Akane picked up the first box of food she found and took it would to set on a table. The box was filled with all kinds of things people had brought back from scavenging. Akane took the time to take out each item and counted them, nineteen in total. And so began the task of separating what was still good from what was past its due date before once again organizing whatever was left into perishables and nonperishables. It didn’t take her very long, thirteen minutes to get everything done wasn’t so bad.

There were a few items that needed to be repackaged though since they weren’t exactly sound proof. Moving away from her station, Akane went and grabbed the baggies they’d been told to use to put the new food in. On her way out, she spotted someone else organizing their food except they weren’t taking out the food that wasn’t good anymore.

“Hey, it looks like you got something that is past its due date.” The person turned to her, blinking.

“What?”

Walking over, Akane picked up a can. The food inside was obviously spoiled when you looked at the date.

“Oh thanks.”

Akane nodded and headed back to her station. Things like that could slip, but getting someone sick was not fun and if she could avoid it than she would. She went back to her repackaging process, taking the food out and putting it back into a new package. She was almost done when the younger boy came up to her again rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.

“Would you mind helping me out a bit, I don’t think I’m very good at this.”

Akane glanced at his pile, he indeed had a lot to do, but she also had her own to finish.

“Alright, but I can only do a little.” He nodded and beamed at her with a smile. She didn’t know if he was trying to get her to do his work or not, and if he was she was only going to help with very few packages. Akane went over to help him with a couple of packages before returning to her own. She had only done a few people someone came in telling them it was time to go and just put back everything in storage. It didn’t feel like she had done much, but every little bit helped.
