SECURITY SCREENING Once upon a time, the Clearview Apartments had an airy, spacious lobby. It has since been transformed into a security hub and is the first line of defense against undesirable human survivors. Capable individuals, such as yourself, can volunteer to assist those who maintain the building's security full time.
Quote:
To consider this quest complete, you must clear or deny entry to three people. It doesn't matter if all three fail to make it inside during the first step; as long as you have attempted to clear three individuals, you may go for the umbrella reward.
If you are taking on this quest in a group, one person may do the rolling as long as everyone RPs the results.
Step One - The Key Card
Each resident has a key card that they must carry on their person at all times. The key card readers are the only things that have a working source of power in the building, and as long as they are active, no one without a card should even be able to get through the glass doors without resorting to violence. Ideally, you should be able to just stand there while they let themselves in.
Roll 1d4.
The person approaching has no key card. They beg you to let them in, but you stand firm. Eventually they give up. (It is up to you how much they fight before they go/are chased away.) The person approaching has no key card, but you swear you recognize them. You let them inside when the main guards aren't looking. Move on to Step Two. The person approaching produces their key card and passes through the front doors without incident. Move on to Step Two. The person outside has spent the last twenty minutes searching for their key card and... oh, look! They finally found it! How did it even get in there? Move on to Step Two.
Step Two - The Umbrella
This is a simple umbrella check. Ask to see the resident's equipment.
Roll 1d20.
1-13: An umbrella is successfully produced for inspection. Examine it. Hold it. Comment on it. Move on to Step Three. 14-20: The faker tries to explain that they just misplaced their umbrella, but even if you believe them, they can't come any farther. You may assist security in kicking the person out, or stand back and watch.
Step Three - The Salute
Every Clearview resident must know the Clearview Salute. It changes weekly, so if you have a poor memory, stay inside. In order to make sure the person trying to enter knows the salute, you must take them behind one of several cloth screens and watch them perform it.
Roll 1d6.
They obviously know nothing of the salute. Halfway through their attempt they give up, muttering to themself as they are escorted out. Upon noticing that entry requires a salute, they scream in terror and run back outside. They execute the Clearview Salute flawlessly! You feel confident welcoming them with open arms. You almost approve this person for entry, but something about them gives you pause. You ask to see their umbrella again, and while you're examining it, it falls apart in your hands! INTRUDER! They confidently perform a salute, but it's not the right one. They're going to have to go. After hesitating a little, they stiffly run through the entirety of the salute, only missing one or two gestures. It's good enough, even for the proper security guard peering over your shoulder.
If you complete this quest and post over 100 words, October will reward you with two cocktail umbrellas the next time he sees you! Please claim them in this thread using the faction quest point claim form locatedhere.

"Morning," Mel greeted as she took a seat near the guard post at the front entrance. It was just another day manning the door and helping out with the screenings and such, and she really, really hoped she wouldn't have to deal with anything too emotionally draining (like yesterday, which she hoped none of the guards would bring up).
The first person to come to the door that morning stopped right in front of her, so she had a pretty good look at the man's face. He'd stopped to look for his keycard, but Mel could've sworn she'd seen him around before. She went with her gut and, when no one was looking, she went ahead and opened the door for him.
"Shh," she said when she approached him. "I'm not exactly supposed to do that, but I'm trusting my gut on this one."

"Can I see your umbrella, please?" she asked politely, confident that he could produce it.
"U-umbrella?" he asked, eyes shifting. Mel wasn't sure if it was out of nervousness or what, but her smile faltered as she nodded slowly.
"Yeah, umbrella. Did you forget it in your bag?" She reached down and grabbed the bag he'd brought inside with him and rifled through it--it was a security check so she was allowed to, she rationalized in her head--for him. She took out each individual thing and let the pile stack beside her, but the umbrella was nowhere to be found. The frown had etched itself pretty well on her face by then, and she started to bag his things again. "I'm sorry, sir," she said finally, emphasizing the "sir" since clearly she didn't know who this was. "But we can't let you in without your umbrella, so..."
"No, w-wait! I must have ju--"
"Sorry, sir, but there's nothing I can do."
"No, please! You can't send me back out there! It's--"
"Guys, please?" Mel gestured to the two beefy looking guys nearby and handed one of them the man's bag. The best she could do was give him an apologetic smile as he was turned around and led toward the door. So apparently her gut was not infallible, and she deflated in her seat as the man was escorted out by the guards, one of which she could swear was giving her a squinty sort of glare.

The next person to walk up also looked familiar, but Mel was a little bit more careful with this one. As she searched for their keycard she squinted and stared until she was cross-eyed, and when she was positive she knew this guy from somewhere she again went ahead and let them inside. She didn't say anything this time, though, and certainly didn't look all that comfortable with her decision. But what were the chances of her being wrong twice in a row?

She cut right to the chase this time, and had no intentions of going through this man's belongings if she could help it. If he stashed his umbrella in the bag, he'd have to look for it himself! ...Which he did, and within minutes he produced a perfectly working umbrella. She even tested it, just to see if it still worked properly and didn't need replacing (though she wasn't entirely sure the replacement would be free), and when she found that it was in good working order she handed it back to him with a bigger smile than she had on earlier.

She led back toward the screens and stood a few feet away, then nodded. "Let's see the salute then, please."
Always polite, and with a smile on her face this time. There was a chance her gut wasn't wrong!
The hope came crashing down as soon as the man started his salute. The first gesture she recognized from a previous salute, and the ones that followed soon formed the salute from the very first week they were established. She let him finish, but frowned and gave a shake of her head. "Sorry, but that wasn't it."
She led him back to his stuff, her feet dragging in the process. The man was blubbering about something or another about the salute, but she was the one who led him out this time, apologizing just once more before she closed the door on him.

A woman came next, but Mel was putting her foot down! She wasn't about to follow her gut after being wrong twice in a row, so even as the woman struggled to find her keycard, Mel just watched from her seat, arms crossed and eyes slightly narrowed as she waited patiently for the woman to get her card out and use it.
If she didn't, well she was SOL. Mel wasn't opening that door for someone she wasn't sure about for a third time that morning. Nope.
Luckily the woman did eventually produce the key and made her way inside, smiling sheepishly at the lot of them that was on duty. Mel approached, still a bit on guard but smiling. "Glad you found it," she said softly, just to greet the woman and make her feel a little more at ease.

She let the woman settle before proceeding to the next step of the screening: equipment check.
"May I please see your umbrella?" she asked, extending a hand. The woman didn't have to look far this time, and simply reached into her bag once to produce a small, compact black umbrella. When tested, it flew open and nearly out of her hands with the force of the springs. It seemed more suited to be a weapon than an umbrella, but it worked fine as far as her inspection was concerned.
She handed it back and gave her word of thanks before moving on.

She looked a bit more hopeful as she led the woman back behind the cloth screen, then asked, "Now then, salute, please."
The woman kind of just stared blankly at her, as though she hadn't heard a word that came out of her mouth. So Mel repeated herself.
"Salute, please."
Another few seconds of staring, and the women then wordlessly just...sort of...well, left. She walked right back to the front, grabbed her bag and showed herself out of the building. It was a little confusing, to say the least, but it wasn't the first time it'd happened to her. With a sigh she took a seat and glanced back at one of the guards, frowning.
"Feels like it's gonna be a long day, huh?" she asked, to which she--the guard--nodded. Mel sighed once more and propped her legs up on another chair nearby, watching and waiting for the next person to show up. Had she known it'd be hours before someone else came, she probably would have taken an early lunch.
