Swarm only grunted in response to the thanks, busy choosing the safest route. The ground had quickly become a muddy mess, engulfing their hooves and making travel difficult. When she could, she used the solid mangrove roots, leading her new charge forward to less dangerous terrain.
Kindness isn’t weakness, she had to remind herself, then couldn’t help wonder if First Strike would do the same thing. No, she didn’t believe the striped doe would. That one had a mantis heart. A wasp knew how to care because they had a hive to protect, a queen and many siblings. They became one mind. The mantis remained alone.
"Keep up," she snapped suddenly, unwillingly.

Swarm didn’t help whenever the doe stumbled but she did stop and wait, head turned to watch her with an unreadable expression. The struggle would make her stronger, she had decided. Though when the wind grew so strong it nearly knocked her off her hooves, she shifted her body like a blockade, taking the brunt until it had passed.
"This way," Swarm said, finally spying shelter and leading her up a hill, ending their gruelling walk at a high bank that arched inward, two trees blocking not all but most of the rain. It wasn’t completely dry but it was better than being out in the open.
Moving undercover, Swarm shivered and shook her head, sending water droplets flying.

Her eyes were closed and her breathing even but Swarm didn’t sleep, not until she heard the other doe finally settle into dreamland. Only then did she let herself relax properly, letting the sound of the rain lull her into a light rest.
It was just before dawn when she woke, the rain still falling but no longer the torrent from earlier. Her tipped her head to the side and regarded Moonlit Waters’ still sleeping form and then stood easily, shaking off leaves and dirt.
Without a backwards glance, she left the doe and returned to the mangrove where Brother and Sister had taken refuge. Pitter patter, pitter patter, went the rain as the two wasps emerged, rising into the air with a drone of their wings. Swarm said nothing, but an expression emerged, almost a smile, as together they turned and left, heading deeper into the swamp.
Tiger_Kisa699 It felt like a natural end point for Swarm! I hope that's okay. 8D
