After the fight with the infected in the bathroom Harper figured if she wasn’t scared completely shitless into punching one in the face that volunteering for Guard Duty would be ok. There was also the fact she didn’t really sleep so keeping her eyes open all night was definitely a rather helpful requirement. Pulling the number seven jersey over her head Harper made her way to the room where the guards kept their office. It used to be some sort of classroom but most of the desk were either broken for boards or stacked up along the edge of the wall blocking a chunk of windows. A tall red head waved her over, giving her a piece of paper to read over before pointing her to what she could only guess was a former emo rock boy.

They shook hands as they exchanged names and after a few minutes of him slowly explaining which way they were going and what the order was they were on their way out to start a round. He didn’t talk a whole lot not that Harper minded she was too fixated on looking around keeping her eyes peeled for anything that was important to report. There was the fear of letting something slip by and some sort of havoc breaking out along the grounds. Even worse was letting something slip by and someone losing their life over it. The guilt alone would have liked driven Harper mad, it already was slipping here and there with the lack of sleep and the worry of food. No instead she didn’t mind the silence at all from her partner and took mental notes when he pointed out smaller problem areas. Places to check, places to move more quietly than others even places where if there was any sort of trouble was best to move to even to hide.

After the first hour of watching a portion of a building Harper leaned back against the wall her eyes always darting around looking for any sort of movement. Something growled, it was a low growl before turning into something that resembled a yelp and then nothing. It was enough that Harper turned around her fist curled up ready to hit whatever came charging for. Her companion turned as well, he had a sort of makeshift shank in hand as he slowly crept forward to where the sound had originated. When he grew closer he crouched down even lower, Harper still following behind him as he crept closer and closer and then peaked around the edge to look down the hallway. He continued stepping forward out into the open as Harper peeked around the edge in turn. Nothing, nothing was there other than some fallen debris and the occasional loose leaf of paper dangling from the wall.

“What….what was that?” Her companion continued to walk slowly down the hallway before pausing at her whispering.

“I want to say it was probably one of the other guard’s on duty but sometimes you are not entirely sure without checking it out.” Harper gave him a bit of a puzzled look as he walked a few more steps and then kicked something to make a little more noise. Nothing moved and his shoulder’s slumped, “yea definitely someone playing a joke on your first run.” He gave her a half of a smile but it didn’t make Harper feel any better. It wasn’t really funny, more or less dangerous to make nose or pretend to be something that could result in someone beating the crap out of them easily.

Returning to their post Harper couched down on the ground pressing her fingers to the floor as she kept her eyes on the hallways. Another hour passed by before they switched watching positions, leaving her leaning against the wall out of a window. Nothing so far, and a few more minutes passed that they moved shifting to another window to keep an eye out for anything that moved. A half hour crawled by before another noise sounded outside as if something had toppled over onto the ground and another low growl sounded. Her companion grabbed her jersey pulling her down below the windowsill. He motioned her to be silent by placing his finger across his lips before slowly raising his head to look out. Motioning her Harper looked over the edge as well as something moved across the yard. Infected, was slowly making its way heading in the direction of the dorms. He signaled to her to hand him a piece of wood on the floor near her foot. Picking it up she handed to him and swiftly he threw it out of the window a rather decent distances away at a set of half burned trees. The infected turned and walked towards the direction of the sound and after an hour disappeared from sight.

The rest of the round went smoothly and Harper and her senior returned and reported what they had seen.
