GATHERING UMBRELLAS
Before the outbreak, people really only used umbrellas when it rained. These days, they are highly sought after, at least if you're looking to make your home at Clearview. Every resident must carry three things with them at all times: a key card, knowledge of the current Clearview Salute, and an umbrella. Sometimes umbrellas are lost. It is up to the community to keep their numbers up.

Quote:
While completing this quest, each roll you make spans one hour. You may only gather umbrellas for five hours at a time (so that's five rolls). Don't ask why; it's something about losing the ability to spot them over time that Zelda probably made up.

You may roll as many 8-sided dice per post as you like, as long as you don't exceed five. One per post might be nice if you're completing this task with others so you can alternate, but that's your call. Place and time are up to you, as long as it's not to far from the building, but be aware that venturing out at night by yourself might get you in trouble. Also up to you: the color and style of the umbrellas you find. Ooo.

  1. You find an umbrella!
  2. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  3. You find an umbrella!
  4. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  5. You find an umbrella!
  6. You find an umbrella!
  7. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  8. You find an umbrella!

If you find three or more umbrellas in a single trip and post over 100 words in this quest, Zelda will reward you with two cocktail umbrellas back at the apartments! Please claim them in this thread using the faction quest point claim form located here.

Aaran couldn't be sure as to what the lead's obsession with umbrellas was. He guessed they could be a valuable item as they kept you dry and could be used for a weapon, but many of the clear view ones were too small to be of great use. But whatever he thought about it didn't matter because, if their leaders wanted umbrellas, then he needed to get some.

He looked around the apartments, hoping to find someone to team up with, when he saw a lone figure by her lonesome. He'd seen Amber around before, but beyond that he didn't know her. She had seemed a little....what was the word? Loner? Maybe that was it.

"Hey" He walked up to her with a relaxed smile on his face. "Have you been outside today? If not, we could team up and venture out into the great unknown. I hear we need to stock up on more umbrellas"

Amber, wide eyed and surprised, looked up at the... Fit young gentleman. "Oh! Um, hello." She practically curled into herself, appearing as shy as she could. Her cheeks even flushed a little.

The little sparrow was no stranger to the concept of umbrellas and gaining rank. It wasn't that she didn't want to (oh did she ever), but more the fact that, without proper defense (or a meat shield), there was no need to endanger herself over such frivolous pursuits.

This, however, seemed like a proper defense (or meat shield).

The young lady attempted to size Aaran up subtly, her eyes darting hither and thither to get a good look at him. "That sounds lovely." Her permanent smile grew slightly. "Not sure if you know my name-" because that sort of thing was a common discussion topic among peers. "-But I'm Amber Sparrow. Who might I have the pleasure of teaming up with today?" Her curls drooped as her head tilted slightly to the side.

The meat shield known as Aaran was pleased she wanted to tag along, and he also learned her name at the same time. "Sweet. And no worries about your name, because I know it now." He stood there, slightly leaning on one leg, still smiling and being chill as ever. "Mines Aaran Brody. By the way, dude, Amber is a really nice name." He thought it nice to add it on, and also hoped she didn't mind the 'dude' thrown in there.

He lead the way to the apartment doors, not walking too far ahead or behind Amber, waving to the guards as he exited the doors as he kept a tight hold of his umbrella and key card. Now hopefully he wouldn't forget the salute either. The usual dreary scene met his gaze, grey skies and turned over cars, as well as rubbish littered area and the occasional fire. But so far, no umbrellas to be seen.

He kept walking, glancing at Amber as he did so. "So..uhh...how you...." He didn't finish, unsure how to talk about the subject or even broach it. For all he knew she could be a emotional wreck, and he didn't want to start pushing nay buttons.

Amber made a point to memorize his name on the spot. For now, it was an important little factoid to recall.

"Nice to meet y-" ... Dude? Wow this guy was a winner for sure. Her inner thoughts hidden, she let out a small giggle behind her hand as the small girl made a point to bring up the rear. "Thank you."

Much like his name, the salute had been properly filed in the confines of her mind.

The apocalyptic atmosphere was greeted with, yet again, the same soft smile as anything else seemed to be. Her own bird-decorated umbrella at the ready, she started to flip aside trash and smaller pieces of debris.

His hesitation was not unfamiliar. Who could blame him when you had walking headcases all around? "I am fine." She squeaked a bit cheerfully. "While the devastation is fairly unpleasant compared to what we once had, the world has not changed so much." A strange thought. "There were always dead men walking. It's just a little easier to tell who is who now, isn't it?"

Well, at least she was laughing? Aaran wasn't sure if this was a good thing or not, but he wouldn't let it trouble him for now, as he had to keep his wits about him. His own umbrella was being used to prob and poke at piles of rubbish to see if anything would move, before he dared to start using his bare hands, bending down to sort through things.

"Good to hear you're coping alright." He glanced at the girl, and at their surroundings. Being the male of the pair he felt responsible for their safety and all. "It's been a really difficult few weeks we've had to put up with. I'm amazed I'm still alive. This hole mess has been a huge bummer."

He couldn't help but notice how the girl was smiling though. She had been smiling the whole time, a small smirk on her face. It was kinda odd. especially how she was talking now. Like the full physician probing of the universe and all that. It nearly went over his head.

"Yeah, I guess...thats pretty true. Words still the same." Though it was hard to really believe that, he was in a apocalypse after all.

The way he spoke, Amber could venture a guess that perhaps he wasn't coping alright himself, which was made clearer by his statement.

"Well." She sighed, her expression dialing back slightly as she started on a new pile of garbage, poking and prodding away unwanted items with the metal point of her umbrella. "Maybe you'll feel better if you think of it this way. All men are truly equal now." She didn't really believe that. "There's no rich, no poor, and no government. You don't have bills to pay, and no one can take anything away from you because, well, you don't have anything." Amber hadn't had anything for a long time, but at least now she didn't have to watch enviously at her 9-9 job as the college kids thrived on mommy and daddy's savings.

"Oh! I found one!" She cautiously grasped the tattered umbrella, holding it up to show Aaran like it was some sort of big stuffed animal prize at the fair.

It was hard for him to know if he was coping alright or not. The only thing Aaran truly knew was he would just go with it, take whatever came his way and hope for the best. If not, then he'd just try and find a way to deal with it.

"I don't know about that." he replied honesty, hands reaching into more debris, his head soon to follow. "We might not...'grunt' have anything left but 'mmff' there are some people who have less then nothing. At least I still have my arms and legs."

His body vanished as he hoped into a small hole. "People have never been good at the whole equal thing. We like to take things off people. And." He paused, shuffling more garbage around "They can still take one thing away. Our lives."

Aaron finally appeared, smiling as he held up a very messed up looking umbrella. "Found one too!"

"Ah. You mean handicapped." The prize was lowered to her side and placed in a specific spot to start a pile. Less than nothing. Her smile grew wider at his turn of phrase. Yes, they truly were less than nothing. After the accident, Richard had been less than nothing.

"At least you have your own slightly positive outlook on it." Yes, at least he was all in tact. She would not have agreed to leave the safety of the apartments had he not been.

Shuffling to an abandoned car, she cautiously opened the door through the broken window and dug under the seats. Yes. Sure. They could take their lives. "If you can really consider that taking, sure. You won't miss it when it's gone." There will just be nothing. Amber wasn't religious or spiritual. If anything, she considered herself to be the greatest being, which left no room for deities.

"Here's another!" She tugged for a few moments before retrieving a child's umbrella, which used to be shaped like a frog's head. Used to.

Perhaps it was a good that Aaran didn't see Amber's smile as he went to hunt around for more umbrellas. "Yeah, I guess so. Gotta try and be positive, otherwise you might lose it." He jogged towards a car located near the one Amber was in, crawling onto the bonnet and then the roof so he could get a better view of his surroundings, And when he didn't see anything of interest he sat down and waited patiently for the girl, legs swinging idly while he watched her search.

"How do you know that for sure?" He asked curiously, leaning back on his hands. Judging by her answer he could tell she wasn't a religious person. He himself wasn't deeply religious, but he wasn't about to write off the hole afterlife thing. "There could be something out there".

He gave her the thumbs up when she retrieved a umbrella that had once resembled a animal of some sort. "Nice, looks like you're beating me by one. October will be happy."

'Lose it', Amber thought, would be putting it lightly compared to some of the things she had seen. But, yes, he was right. If you couldn't find something, anything, to be positive about, there was no point in even lifting your head up when the sun arose.

The petite girl hadn't planned on discussing religion today, but it looked like that would be happening. She trotted back to her official pile, dropping the newly uncovered umbrella before tapping her chin in thought. "What kind of god would allow such a thing to happen?" Her soft voice questioned, the saccharine sound unfitting for such a topic. "I do not believe in such things because there is no evidence to support it. I only believe in myself. Belief in oneself, and a lack of belief in limitations, makes anything possible." And a blatant disregard for others. That helped.

Her eyes widened in surprise as she spotted a handle in the near distance. It could've been a cane, but she was fairly certain it was an umbrella. Amber practically skipped over to the buried item and proceeded to dig it out with her own umbrella as she'd done before. Ah, yes. Another one for Amber!

"I certainly hope so~" She tucked her new find under her arm.

Aaran could only shrug at Ambers question, as he wasn't a expert on such things "Never said god was a nice guy." Was his first reply. "But hey, that sounds totally cool. Solid thinking you have there." It sounded almost like Buddhism, too. "Improving yourself and not thinking about anything else is a awesome thing to do. Not that I'm approving your beliefs or anything. Totally up to you what you think."

He sighed, smiling faintly and hopping off the car hood to move around the front. "I'm not too good at these political talks." On a whim he leaned into the front window to press a button under the dash to pop the bonnet, then went to the front. "Wonder if this car still works...wish I had all my tools." He hummed, checking out the oil and transmission levels. "Damn, they took the battery with them...Oh, hey, whats this?" He reached in between the pipework, and pulled out a small, oil covered umbrella. "Wonder what it was doing here?"

"Hah." It was true, he had never said that. "I think I remember a book or a movie calling god an angry kid with a magnifying glass, pointing it at the anthill called humanity." At one point, she would've sworn it was pointed directly at her. Or, perhaps, pointed at the people around her causing a chain reaction. The semantics of it didn't matter.

"You seem to have a better way around the discussion than some would." As Amber returned her latest find to her ever-growing pile, her eyes focused on his actions. So maybe he had been an auto mechanic in his past life? Wouldn't surprise her. "I don't suppose most of them do. It's a shame, I never got my license." Mostly because by the time she needed to, her wings were clipped and public transportation took care of the rest.

And then... An umbrella? "Huh... Well, some people stored things in weird places!" Curious, she reexamined the car herself, crawling into the front seat and prying open the glove compartment. Oh, a compact umbrella!

"That does sound familiar. Though I can't remember which one it was either." He leaned in further to examine the state of the engine. "Hmm, you think so?" He twisted a few caps off to look inside.

"You're right, most don't work, since the good ones were taken long ago. The ones left are just broken hunks of junk. This one doesn't look to bad, but there are some lose wires about. Doesn't appear to be any gas left either, Probably siphoned off long ago. Though there is some water left in the radiator. If we get desperate." He stood back, wiping dirty hands on his pants. "No license? Thats a bummer. Oh well, don't need one now, As you said, no laws, so who's gonna book you for driving?"He chuckled at the thought. Now all they needed was a decent car.

As Amber gathered up the spoils of her hunt, she watched as he continued to fiddle with the car.

"I suppose no one would, but that doesn't mean I should." She was certain it would be no issue for someone like her to learn but what would be the point now? Wouldn't it draw more unwanted attention than anything?

"Oh well. I suppose that's a thing of the past now." Much like iPhones and American Idol. "I'm ready to turn in my findings!"
