Freshman Quest: Food Prep

If experience has taught us anything, noisy packaging can ruin a perfectly good plan. Since the 'Great Sunchip Bag Fiasco Of Two Weeks Ago' and 'Twinkie Wrappers of Two Days Later', we spend some time to transfer packaging safely. This is where you Freshmen come in.

To complete this task, your character is given a temporary key to the food storage units. All of the food had already been counted and accounted for by the time they get there. Their only two objectives to their time in Food Prep are as follows: Organize by type (i.e. perishable vs non-perishable), and Repackage everything that can/needs to be. Once they are finished, they are to return the key, and their work is once more counted - to ensure they haven't taken more than what they are rationed to take.

To complete this task:
- Roll 4d20 however you'd like. (You can either do 1 post of 4d20, or 4 posts of 1d20)
  • First Dice: How many pieces of food you organized.
  • Second Dice: How long it took you to perform the organization. Each number represents one minute.
  • Third Dice: How many pieces of food you repackaged.
  • Fourth Dice: How long it took you to repackage the food. Each number represents one minute.

- Example: I roll 4d20. I get 17, 11, 11, 5. I organized 17 pieces of food into perishables/non perishables, and it took me 11 minutes. I then repackaged 11 pieces of those foods, and it took me five minutes.
- You can make excuses as to why the numbers are skewed - in this case, I would say that something happened outside of the kitchen area, and they had to stop me from continuing my work. Or, you know, my character was lazy and the last six pieces sounded like much too much work. If you have excess (example: you organized 5 pieces, but repackaged 20), assume someone else left organized food without repackaging them. More work for you!
- Once you roll your 4d20, and write a post of no less than 500 words, you can consider this quest completed, and may count it towards your rankings.

Obtaining Credits
- Add up your dice, divide it by 4, then divide that answer by 2. This is how many credits you earn.
- Example: I rolled 17, 11, 11, 5. I add them together. 17 + 11 + 11 + 5 = 44. I divide 44 by 4 and get 11. I divide 11 by 2 and get 5.5. Round up, and I managed to get away with 6 course credits.

If you wish to do this in a group:
- You may!
- Each player in that thread must roll 4d20 - after all, they're there to work together, not all do the same work.
- Basically, you can just RP with each other while you play with food.

Quote:

OOC Rules
- Assume the key giving, key returning, and counts are all done off-screen. You can just mention them in RP!
- When it comes to obtaining credits, always round up if there is a decimal point.
- This quest will be considered complete if you roll a 4d20 and write at least 500 words. Because of the ability to win a substantial amount of credits, we will be checking this using this word count tool, so make sure you are getting at least 500 words!

Austin was hungry, just now, a gnawing hunger that made him grumpy and short with people around him -- which meant maybe he wasn't the wisest person to give the key to the food storage unit. A job was a job, though, and a task a task, and he'd been handed his so he'd get it done as quickly as he could, maybe pocketing something here and there, if he could find the opportunity to do so. If he could get away with it. He had enough sense for that, at least.

He wasn't inclined to work alone, though, wasn't interested in sitting in a room surrounded by pre-packaged foods and mess with only his own thoughts for company -- so, with the key jangling in his hand, he reached out to catch the shoulder of the first person standing around doing nothing he could find.

"Hey, uh..." He probably should have known her name. There were only about 40 of them in this area. And yet, he didn't: Austin's expression went blank for a moment, eyes narrowed as he flicked a look downward.

"Number 14. Have I got a job for you." And with that, he drew her along with him toward the storage unit.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER HERE.

Austin's slim and a bit taller than average at 5'10' with sandy hair shorn short on the sides, longer and curly on the top. His eyes, behind a pair of thin wire thick plastic frames with the wrong prescription, are faded green and usually amused; his skin is fair, freckling in sun unless he's careful; his mouth is just a little too full, in a way that appeals to most people.

Dahlia was just minding her business, trying not to get picked for things. She didn't feel up to doing anything interesting today. But then someone called her out. Great. I guess now I have to do something today.

Dahlia followed the guy. She didn't really have any idea about what they were doing until they got to the area. Food Prep. As soon as that thought was thought, her stomach began to growl. Well maybe this wasn't a bad idea to be working on. Maybe something will feed this hunger. Possibly thirst as well.

Mostly Austin had just wanted her there for company: someone to talk to and, should unexpected circumstances arise, someone who might run a little more slowly than him, to serve as fodder for the monsters and get him out alive and well. The fact that it seemed like she'd actually be fairly quick at the word was only a bonus.

He grabbed a chair and sat on it backwards to start sorting through piles of perishable and non-perishable foods, organize it into two careful piles, and shot her a look to do the same.

"Do you have an actual name? Or is 14 fine?" His tone was lightly teasing, with just a touch of something biting, exasperated, behind it. Trying to needle her into opening her mouth.

Dahlia began working through the pieces of what could be used and not be used. Weirdly enough she had shifted through not that great of a pile. Dahlia peered over to the boy who had asked her to tag along and work with him. She wasn't sure why he picked her out of the many others, but she was kind of glad. She didn't like being stuck around inside the building doing nothing.

"Dahlia. Dahlia is my name." she said to him after sifting through more pieces in the room. "I also prefer you don't use that number from that hideous jersey."

"Do you have anything that you prefer to be called by? Or would you rather just be called a number?" she said, finally looking over towards the boy.

There was a pause and he gave her a look over his work, almost wounded, like he couldn't believe the question. Like he thought she should know his name, even if he hadn't had a damned clue what hers was. It was probably affected, but if so, it was well done: Austin blinking widely behind his glasses, still working at the pile in front of him. He still had a bit more to sort through, finding some more canned peaches to add to his non-perishable pile.

"Austin Elswood. Were you a freshman?"

Dahlia had finished going through the perishable and nonperishable items, and began going through the next section. She was somewhat focused more on finishing her stuff than talking at the current time. There was a minute of silence before she spoke. "I guess you can say that. It's complicated."

"Were you also a freshman? Or were you just someone that just happened to be in the area at the time IT happened?" she said with some stress on the it.

"I was a sophomore, actually." It came with a raised eyebrow, looking up at the girl. He was almost done sorting, but somehow, he'd ended up with much bigger piles than her. It could be blamed on sharper eyes, except for the fact that he was halfway blind in these glasses. Austin shook his head, looking back down to shove the last few pieces of perishables into the pile.

"Poli sci major. Not complicated at all." Which wasn't exactly asking what 'complicated' meant, but it was digging, just a little.

Wow how many pieces had she gone through? How many different pieces had she repacked? From what she was counting (and by how fast she had been doing them) there was about 16 pieces. She had a couple of more pieces to go before she would be completely finished with her part of the work. She pulled some of the longer dyed strands away from her face to behind her ear, showing off some of the freckles that were now fading from her face.

She made a slight giggle beneath her breath - but loud enough to hear. "That's impressive. I was going into computer engineering before this entire mess happened."

"But you weren't a student?" Now he needled harder: somewhat carelessly starting to repackage the things he'd found, put them in boxes based on the type and shape of each thing he laid his hands on. Mostly, he watched her, his head cocked, several fair curls falling into his own face. Behind it, he was calculating. Debating the odds. His chances.

"-- or is it you weren't a freshman exactly?" It was a puzzle, and he mulled over it a little. "Expelled for bad behavior?"

She knew he was prying. She didn't really mind at this point. Who knows? She could be dead by the end of this week. Who'd care then? She started with a deep sigh after finishing the last packing item. She turned around, and looked down at the ground - and back at him - throughout speaking. "I graduated early. Skipped a couple grades. Went to community college for a while. Credits didn't transfer here." Her thumbs rubbed on the sides of the thighs at that thought. She wasn't exactly lying, but she was exaggerating the truth a bit. Those couple times in the hospital weren't things she would want people to know her by. "So technically because of how much schooling I had already gone through, I should technically be a junior, but my gen ed classes wouldn't transfer here. Does that answer your question Austin?"

"It certainly makes more sense than you being thrown out for bad behavior." He quirked a smile, crooked, dropped the lass bundle of food into a box, and then rolled up to stand. If she was going to be like that, he wasn't going to stick around anymore than he had to -- or bother flirting anymore, or digging anymore.

"If I didn't, I can't imagine anyone else would." It was bravado, more than anything else -- not that she'd know that. Austin rolled a shoulder, kicking a box back into line and looking down at her work.

"I think that's enough for us to get credit for this task."

She giggled slightly, a blush appearing on her face. One that she hadn't felt in such a long time. "Well duh dude. If I had gotten kicked out for bad behavior, how would I have gotten here? Haha."She ran her fingers through her hair from front to back. Her fingers slid through her blacks locks like water, soft and majestic.

She grabbed her items and threw them in with the rest of his stuff. "Yeah I think we did enough to get credit. Hopefully."

She peered over at him, slightly flustered and awkward. "Hey, uhm Austin," she paused. "Sorry if I did anything or said anything that weirded you out or anything. Ever since Day Zero happened, it's been hard to talk to people. I was actually kinda glad to tagged me along to help. Haven't really done much involving other people." Dahlia meant that through her words. Hopefully maybe he would too.

Austin raised both eyebrows at the girl's awkward demeanor, pausing. He'd been about to leave, but this made him hesitate, debate, with his head cocked slightly to one side and a smile playing loosely around his mouth. It seemed, to him, that his options around this place were less and less limited by the minute.

"Don't worry about it." He patted her on the shoulder as he said it, stooping to grab the keys from the ground. Absently, he flicked them around his hand, spinning while he waited. He had to lock up after they left, or else he'd be held responsible for anything that went missing.

"Just be open to people, I guess, share what you'll share --" He paused, expression shifting as he took a step toward the door. "Damn. I wish we had some alcohol. I'd host a game of Never Have I Ever."

She smiled shyly back at the boy. It was weird. Every since that day things just haven't been the same. Heck it was super hard for it to ever be the same. There wasn't a way to go back to the way it once was. The old way of life would never come back. And even if it did, it changed everyone forever.

She looked down at the ground, her feet doing something funny thing. She looked back up. "Thanks Austin. "

She began to walk to the door, but paused and waited for Austin. "That actually sounds like a lot of fun, especially during this time. I think that would be what everyone would need to keep their mind off of this."
