Living alone in a foreign country taught him two things very quickly. One – that if he were to continue his life from his college days and not clean up after himself, nobody would. And second – that he would most certainly die eventually from the accumulation of filth.
And so by the end of the first year of living in his 2 room flat, the man had become quite accustomed to doing his own housework, a life skill that would stay with him for many years to come.
Cleaning the floors was not a challenge by any means. The only thing to worry about was whether he would have any unwanted company whilst going about his assigned duty – to which fortunately, there was none.

He had been assigned to clean the gym, while considerably large, was a lot less trouble compared to having to deal with the carpeted floors.
Still, it amazed him at how there would always be a mess left in the room despite the few numbers that would gather here for the tri-weekly briefings. He also definitely did not want to know about the strange sticky stains that appeared in patches on the floor.
The doors were creaked open, letting the light from the outside illuminate the interior. Wheeling over the pail and the mop, Peter gingerly removed his shoes and socks and stepped onto the hardwood floor to begin cleaning. He grimaced when the first stroke of the mop across the floor produced a much different colour than the rest around it. What on earth has been going on in here? he sniffed, sliding the mop along a straight line down to the other end of the gym and back.
He'd better do a good job at this, he thought, thinking about how it has been getting more and more difficult to distinguish the signs of illness appearing in the students as one stemming from the infection, or that simply caused by damn poor hygiene among other things.
Why, why did he still end up walking in on people even now?

The gym floor was mopped with a vengeance, as the beleaguered professor thought back to all the things that had been going wrong in the past month, particularly about how difficult it was to function without the administrative staff. And the janitor lady, he reminisced somberly, as he made another round around the floor. He had never really been a people person, but times like this made him miss them who would occasionally bother him to go for lunch together.
Speaking of lunch, he missed the lunch lady too. Sorry for complaining about the sandwiches all the time, he moped as he mopped, and all the diluted coffee and all the undercooked vegetables. Those remaining have been reduced to a life of eating those year-old bite sized sample snacks and bottled water scavenged from the freshmen orientation goodie bags. They hadn't gotten quite desperate enough to start trying the vegetables from the garden that had been dubiously maintained by the agriculture project group yet.
The last stroke of the mop produced a satisfying squick against the hardwood floor, and the man was certain that they could practically eat off the floors with how good a job he had done. The mop head was dipped back into the pail of water, which by now has taken on a sickly grey colour. Eventually, probably in a few days, someone would have to clean this place up again. But for now he would just report back to the dormitories and let the students know that the place was open for combat practice again.
