Description: Malls are big, and there's more than enough room for every Mall Rat to make their home there, and your home can always use improvements! Collect some supplies, find a safe space to sleep through the night, and, well. Make yourself at home away from home.
Goals:
Step 1: MAKE IT HABITABLE.
You as a survivor need to find something that will work as a bed, something to store your personal items in, and a way to get some privacy for changing. (No washrooms, because no store in the mall has enough space to dedicate an employee-only bathroom). That and people keep taking your furniture to help reinforce the barricades... Looks like it's time to replace everything again.
Roll 1d10. If even, you succeed. If odd, don't worry! Just roll again till you get even. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 2: MAKE IT DEFENSIBLE.
Use any loose items you can find to protect the front of the store you've set up in. While most of the mall is safe, there are some shops that aren't, and you've got to prepare for the worst.
Roll 2d4 until they match. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT DEFENDABLE.
With another survivor-- played by a player or one you NPC-- check the strength of your defenses.
Both roll 1d10. The higher roll determines the outcome. If you are NPCing, the first roll is yours, the second roll is the NPC's. If the barricades stay up, you get 1 bonus Arcade Token for completing the quest.
Otherwise repeat Step 2 until your dice matches, then try Step 3 again to make sure it can withstand the "assault."
If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT LIVABLE.
There is an IKEA in the mall, and that means you get to raid it for furniture! ...Easier said than done, though.
Find the kind of furniture you want! Feel free to just RP it out and pick what you want! Escape the labyrinth: Roll 2d6 till they match. Find the boxed version you need to put together: Roll 1d20 till you get an even number. Put the furniture together: Roll 1d20 till a 15 or higher.
If you have to roll more than 5 times, consider it done! Congratulations!
First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.
Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.
Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! You need to meet this word count while doing the quest, so no going back to pad your quest to claim tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.
500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens. 600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens. 700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens. 800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.
Whistle While You Work: You can absolutely work on living quarters with someone else, even if you don't intend to stay with them. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but it does mean you get good company!
Calab had not had a regular sleeping space for what he could remember of the last month. His people skills weren't the greatest. His personality(s) weren't any better. It was time to set up camp someplace. He wasn't exactly sure what he needed or where to start...
"Uh, I'll need... a place to sleep... and something- gah!- I don't know!" He was talking to himself, not that uncommon given the times. After standing there looking into the nearest darkened store, Calab sighed and walked in. He wished he could remember where he'd slept last night. Not that he'd left anything there, mind. He'd packed the only thing he had of value hidden on his person and he wasn't letting anybody know. Not that it has any money value, but he'd seen how people had spiraled out of control over the days.
"I need-" Calab mumbled again as he started searching through the area. Maybe he could find something in all this mess.

Calab blinked at the netting he'd just uncovered. He wasn't so lucky that he'd wondered into his last sleeping place. Besides he would have had a hard time tearing down the other hammock anyway. This one however was spilling out of a nearly shredded cardboard box, and was looking complete! The teen pulled everything free, then paused. This store looked rather looted already and no one seemed to be coming and going from it often, the mess on the floor would most likely have a path or two pushed through it if so. He was still in the 'safe' part of the Mall. He guessed he could set up here. Now he needed to find some other stuff...
Anyone watching the teen might think he'd lost it. He actually had lost it, just not at this moment. He had no knife, nor razor, but if you looked hard enough and long enough you could find a sharp edge on something... often something that couldn't be walked off with. Seeing a teen with an empty soda bottle fished out of the trash- the top roughly hacked off after much frustration with a somewhat sharp inside metal edge of an otherwise safe looking desk- and now slowly 'peeling' the bottle into one long strip. Yes, crazy. Until you saw the result. One long strip of very durable plastic 'rope'... that at the moment was disappearing into a pocket before anyone took too much notice in what Calab was doing.
With his 'rope' now he just needed the other part, a bag. Many stores had racks and shelves that bolted to the walls, that while picked clean were much harder to tear down and leave cluttering the floor, the one Calab had picked out was just one of many that still had at least something still bolted to the wall, ignored as useless.Calab weighted the bag with a bit of garbage from the floor, tied the 'rope' to the hand-hold and gave it a test flip up over a high display. After a few more tries he was able to guess it was working well enough, and tied the other end of the plastic 'rope' around one of the lower things stuck to the wall.
He took a few steps back. Okay right up on it he could tell it had been done... but the further he moved away from the area the more difficult the plastic was to see as it blended in with the display, even the bag just looked like trash tossed about. Not that he had anything to keep safely hidden.

Okay, now he needed to block the entrance way... hadn't Guy just got most of these places open? Calab eyed the 'cage' that rolled down from the roof of the store as he wondered if he could lower it most of the way and hold it.

After the first attempt failed, Calab set about the problem from a different angle. He also grabbed a few unprotected pallet-flats and added them to his work.

Calab held his ears this time, after the loud clatter of his last attempt had brought a few curious glances. Dang it he was trying to not be noticed! He looked further about for more things, maybe he could move one of the potted palms, the ceramic pot it was in looked heavy

Potted Palm for the win apparently. Calab was not about to question it. However now he needed to test his makeshift barricade. He couldn't do that himself, beside he was getting worn out after dragging stuff in from all over the Mall. Eventually he dragged a random person over who'd stayed too long watching him struggle with all this on his own. "What do you mean, what do you do? You try to force your way in. No I swear the cage will not hit the floor..." as long as the block hold was added mentally.

Well that had fallen apart rather quickly. "At least you didn't get hit with the cage." Calab offered, then went back to reconstructing. And more gathering.

"I think I saw another Potted Palm on the other end of the Mall." Calab mumbled as he tried to figure out why he was once again unable to get the idea to work.

He really didn't want to resort to looking on other floors. And as fun as sliding down steps on something flat looked in movies, he'd probably fall flat on his face in real life. If anything, eventually the store wouldn't look like a store if he kept this up.

Oh bloomen' whatever he was ready to try again, or rather he was now pointing at the rather mixed results of his work. "Just.. try it."

There was crashing and clattering, but the barricade held this time. His helper looked shaken as he walked back over to Calab. With a smirk Calab spoke, "So feel like spelunking in IKEA?" The kid took off at a full run. Calab took that as a 'no'.

Calab wasn't sure why he thought to go for furniture now... why not be done with it. The less inhabited it looked the less attention it would get.. right? Maybe it was just him, his eyes grazed over anything that wasn't moving or didn't look like it had a use.
