DAY ZERO PROMPT
It wasn't a night unlike any other, or at least that's how it started, Ashton had been stepping out of his dorm building with a few books tucked up under his left arm. He'd borrowed the books the other day from the campus library to use for a paper due at the end of the week, already the professor had assigned a paper, and the three books under his arm had proved useful but they had served their purpose and the rest of his informational help had come via the internet, oh the glories of the internet and the marvelous thing that was google. Thankfully the professor had decided only three sources cited had to be from actually books, the sort of thing with printed upon papers which were bound together (he did wonder if some people had ever cracked open a book outside of a school setting).
The library proper, as he tended to call it to himself, was closed by the lobby was open where notices could be posted and a drop box was for people dropping things off when the library itself was closed. Pulling open the door he stepped into the dimly lit lobby and made his way to the slot that was labeled books, the one to the right of it was labeled videos and cd's; who listened to cd's anymore? Shaking his head as he slipped one book followed by another and than the last into the slot he turned and headed back out the lobby just as the lights went out...that was odd. The lobby always had it's lights on in case people were up late doing papers and decided to drop off books they were done using, like he'd just done. There had been no flickering which had lead up to it, no indication of a burnt out light tube, and it wasn't just one light but all of them in the lobby. "That's...odd." And not good. It didn't sit well with him at all and he hurried back to his dorm intent on seeing if anyone had a clue what was going on. But as he looked about the campus' expansive grounds he noted the absence of light, even the parking lot lights were out. "Really not good." He whispered to himself, somehow it felt wrong to break the sudden eerie feeling by raising his voice above a whisper.
As he moved down the path toward the dorm building he fished his cell phone from his back pocket and unlocking the screen tried to access the schools website, or more importantly the social media site for the university, and see what people were talking about. But it seemed he was unable to gain access to the internet. "Ok...really not good." No, this was really wrong feeling now and he didn't like it. Stopping in his tracks he looked around as he was sure he'd just heard something...but what? Tilting his head, brushing his hair from his face and tucking it behind his ears, he heard it again - a scream. Something high and defiantly female. Soon after he heard more screams split the air and than he saw people that were running. He heard people shouting and names being called as the sounds from the not so far off dorm buildings hit his ears and deciding it was best to beat the incoming swarm of people he turned and took off deciding it might be best to get off campus. It was like a small, enclosed, community and whatever was going on wasn't good and it would be best to leave the little community - right?
An hour later and he'd decided that leaving the campus was a good thing but what had happened there wasn't isolated to just there. Watching as what he was sure, by now, was a zombie brought a screaming man to the ground. They were a goner he thought to himself just as he managed to skirt being grabbed himself, he was not interested in joining the undead - nope. He'd heard about something going on somewhere but hadn't really looked into it, maybe he should have? He was sure he'd heard whispers in class the day before about something like this. Maybe if he headed back to campus he'd be safe? Everyone driven away from there and the place empty now? Where the food went the predators, or in this case zombies, went? Deciding that might just be an idea he turned and took off toward the campus he'd run from only an hour ago.
