[DAY 1]

Security duty was such a yawn. She couldn’t even remember why she’d volunteered for this in the first place – maybe it had seemed like a better idea when she’d been asked. She liked that the building was reasonably secure from infected and other intruders, but nobody in the building liked October’s three-tiered security system, it was a hassle. Plus, the Clearview Salute was complicated and embarrassing! At least they performed it behind a curtain. Yvonne was fairly sure she could perform it in her sleep. She was also fairly sure a well-trained money could do this job instead of her; too bad she was all out of monkeys.

She was yawning deeply when someone shuffled up to the reinforced glass doors of the building. She didn’t recognize the newcomer, which was unusual, but she was the first to admit she didn’t know everyone who had a key card. The stranger pulled on the door handles without even trying to get out their card. Yvonne frowned, surely all the residents knew they needed their card to get into the building, and October was NOT tolerant of people who went wondering outside without it. Getting locked out at Clearview could mean your life.

The visitor knocked on the door, grabbing her attention and gestured to be let in. She shook her hand and mimed swiping a card before crossing her arms over her chest and glaring at the person on the other side of the thick glass. The stranger then began turning out his pockets and searching frantically for the missing key. This went on for quite some time, and Yvonne began to wonder if she should go get one of the professional security guards, when the guy finally produced his key card from inside his left sock. Yvonne wrinkled her nose in distaste as he swiped the card and let himself in the building.
“HA-HA! Though I’d lost it!” The newcomer said boisterously, seemingly unfazed about having almost been locked out in the night. “But it always turns up in the end, I’ll just be going home now. . .” and he turned instinctively towards the elevator.

4. The person outside has spent the last twenty minutes searching for their key card and... oh, look! They finally found it! How did it even get in there? Move on to Step Two.

[DAY 1]

“HOLD ON!” Yvonne said, stepping in front of the stranger and blocking his path into the building. “I need to see your umbrella.”

“M-my what?” He stammered, confused. If Yvonne was suspicious before, alarm bells were ringing in her head now. Who did this guy think he was fooling!?

“Your umbrella, sir. I need to see it. Now.” She said shortly.

“Oh, that. I misplaced it while I was out. I got attacked, you see. Ran into some no-good bandits, but everything’s ok now! See?” He spread his arms wide, but Yvonne wasn’t buying it. Even if this guy was actually a resident, which he wasn’t, and he had been attacked by bandits, which he hadn’t, he would know better than to return to Clearview without his umbrella. She stared the intruder down and covertly signaled for the on-duty guard.

The man was quite surprised when a security guard built like a linebacker swooped in and ripped the (likely) stolen key card from his grasp before hustling the man outside and depositing him on the sidewalk in front of the build.

Yvonne smiled in satisfaction as the man wasted his breath and precious daylight standing outside screaming about how unfair they were and how they had to give him shelter for the night, before finally giving up and sulking off.

14-20: The faker tries to explain that they just misplaced their umbrella, but even if you believe them, they can't come any farther. You may assist security in kicking the person out, or stand back and watch.

[DAY 1]

An older lady in a graying housecoat approached the door. Yvonne eyed her suspiciously, on high alert after the last idiot. She thought the little grey-haired woman might look familiar, like they’d passed in the hallways before, but she couldn’t be sure. It was unusual for the older folks to leave the safety of the building.

Yvonne watched as the older woman primly extracted her key card from a small purse she’d conjured from somewhere in the folds of her voluminous dress, and swiped in expertly. She trundled inside, letting the door slam behind her, before returning the card to her purse.

“Good afternoon dearie!” She greeted Yvonne.

3. The person approaching produces their key card and passes through the front doors without incident. Move on to Step Two.

[DAY 1]

“Hello!” Yvonne responded. Now that she had a better look at the woman she was fairly certain that she actually was a resident of the building. They’d passed in the hallways sometimes, though this lady lived on the first floor so she didn’t have to maneuver the stairs.

“May I please see your umbrella?” Yvonne said kindly. She could see the lady’s black umbrella plainly, its crooked handle sat in the bend of the woman’s arm, but she still needed to inspect it. The rules might be silly but they were still rules.

“Of course, dear.” She responded, holding the umbrella out, handle first, for Yvonne’s inspection. It was a very nice, solid, umbrella with a polished wooden handle. She handled it carefully but firmly, making sure all the parts were there and in order, before handing it back to the newcomer.

“That is a very nice umbrella.” She commented. “Everything looks to be in order, so if you could just step behind this screen with me for the salute.

1-13: An umbrella is successfully produced for inspection. Examine it. Hold it. Comment on it. Move on to Step Three.

[DAY 1]

The woman followed her behind the screen, and Yvonne waited patiently while she prepared to perform the Clearview Salute. What followed was a rapid succession of articulated gestures. Yvonne was surprised that someone so old could be so spry, and thought the lady was particularly smooth with the umbrella flourish, which tripped up so many people.

Even the security guard behind her was impressed. Yvonne smiled warmly at the old woman as she collected her things.

“Welcome home!” She said cheerfully, waving the woman on through to the inner reaches of the building before resuming her watch at the front door.
