Freshmen Quest: Cleaning Day

Well it seems like you were the lucky person who was elected to do cleaning duty! Fear not though, because there are other people likely doing the same job as you elsewhere in different rooms. Living in the university is great being as the dorms are home base, so more room... but also means more to clean. Keeping things tidy and clean is not only safer but healthier in the long run!

Roll 1d4 and RP matching your number with that activity below.

Rolled a 1

Seems you were suckered into bathroom cleaning duty.

How messy was it? Roll 1d4 and RP your response!

1- Oh man did a nuclear bomb go off in here?
2- Someone seems to be cleaning up after themselves, shouldn't require much effort.
3- Was that a spider i just saw???? Gross!
4- Seems lived in, but still moderately nasty.

How well did you do cleaning wise? Roll 1d4 and RP your response!

Rolled a 3

Which floor type do you clean? Roll 1d4 and RP your response!

1- Carpets, We found a working vacuum!
2- Carpets, We have one of those powerless roller vacuums... it doesnt work really well.

How well did you do cleaning wise? Roll 1d4 and RP your response!

1- Too gross, i did a quick job and got out of there.
2- I did the best i could, but not really a great job.
3- I cleaned all i could see! But i didn't go under objects like tables...
4- You could eat off my floors, i did an AMAZING job.

Rolled a 4
You will be spending your day today washing clothing!

How did you wash the clothing? Roll 1d4 and RP your response!

1- The washer and Dryer are working today, of course i'd just use those.

Cleaning duty. This might be worse than scavenging. s**t, Harvard had a doctorate and knew 15 languages; he'd written papers, won awards! He should be holed up in the library researching, or teaching students, or trying to decipher if the infected had a language they communicated in or...

But no.

He was here, and he was going to have to clean with Dr. Hubertson. He knew the man only in passing - Harvard had made it his goal to keep himself relatively abreast of all the faculty. He'd heard something... that the man was like a walking could of gloom, only without the sharpness that pessimism brought. He rubbed his beard. Best to get started and finish quickly. "Ok, Dr. Hubertson, you ready? Laundry duty." s**t, he hoped the older man wouldn't just keel over from fatigue.

The Semblance of Unity

Mr. Hubertson preferred the company of faculty, like-minded professors who had spent years in school accumulating insane debt in order to teach the future. However, the University of Emerson had been large and because of that, he didn't meet anyone outside of his department building. This excluded a great number of professors.

"I'm here." The man said, his voice low and drawn out, almost as if his nose was stuffed up.

He followed beside the other doctor to the laundry room and hoped he didn't have to clean any student's indecent clothing. They were still surrounded by young, uninhibited young peoples.

Harvard held no qualms about sliding past Morris into the washroom first - first come, first serve, first done. He'd been told that sometimes only one washer or one dryer worked and he did not feel like shoving his arms into wet clothes and washing things the old fashioned way. And his own personal standards would not allow him to do a piss-poor job of the washing, even if he desperately wanted to. However, it looked like he was in luck. Both a washer and and a dryer had lights on that typically indicated a working order. He began loading things into the washer as Morris came in.

"See if you can find a working washer. It's the easiest way." Harvard grimaced as he dropped a particularly crusty sock in. Well, someone wasn't getting laid, obviously. "Watch out for the gross stuff - these are university students we are washing for, after all." His voice dripped with condescension.

"Oh, alright." Mr. Hubertson sighed, taking his load and moving through the room at the clunking machines. The good thing about a University is that they all had machinery they needed for basic livin without leaving the campus. It was good to have water and clean clothes, even if many students didn't agree with his bland, worn fashion sense.

He did manage to find a working washing machine, but all the dryers either had an odd smell or were not working.

He waited for his load to finish and looked back to his fellow faculty member. "Have you been tutoring any?"

"Tutoring? No, as if the students have the attention span right now for learning languages or discussing the impact of changing language on society." Harvard made a disgruntled noise. The world had gone to s**t and student had even less drive to attend a class, not that they had a lot before. Some students would never appreciate linguistic anthropology and just sleep through the class. But, considering the situation now... in a way he couldn't blame them. On the other hand - if they were supposed to be 'the future', they had responsibilities they could not shirk. Damn kids.

"Why, do you have any tutorees?" The chemical smell had thankfully faded from the clothes as he took them out of the dryer and began to fold them neatly, separating them by type. He folded up a particularly nice button down shirt and managed to stuff it into one of his pockets. His, now. He breathed deeply; Harvard had used a nice, color-safe bleach, and all the stains, even the crusty hell of some of the socks was gone. For a moment, he mourned the lack of fabric softener. "There, all done. Cleanliness is next to godliness."

He had a washing machine with the finest setting, fabric softener, and a lot of automatic buttons that required almost nothing out of him. It meant the basic washing machines were at least managable but not great for him. He rubbed his hands as load beeped done, and took it out to slowly fold.

The clothes were not pristine and a few clumped together with slightly lighter stains then when they entered. If anything, they had gone through a nice rising.

Not having a dryer, he went to a hanging rack and started to put the clothes on hangers to let dry on the rack.

"No." He sighed back. "No one comes to my dorm for private tutoring. No one wants to know about Occupational Hazards - even if they are working on construction sites and accidents can happen anywhere." He said, already giving up before a debate was even started.

"Have the other professors?"

"Not that I know of - now there are some professors I might not mind taking lessons from, myself." His grin kicked up into a slant for a second. Clearly, Harvard was thinking about a certain 'special' kind of tutoring. One that might end up in learning new things both ways. He folded the rest of his assigned clothes and put them in a basket.

"But," he leaned against the dryer. "Did you really expect them to come for lessons or tutoring in this situation?" It was about time to head back; he was slotted for some other duty after this.

The Semblance of Unity

"I was hoping maybe students would still want to be students on campus in the off time." When curfew hit and there was less to do, he hoped students still wanting to learn would come to seek advice or knowledge from their professors. It was a great opportunity with faculty living right next door to learn more about each other and to educate each other without any cost at all hours. However, no one seemed to hope for the future, and he felt that was the saddest thing of it all. No one had any expectations for the future and in that turn, never made many plans. Everything was a set schedule, and not even one he created. He was now on someone else's time card, graded by his physical traits and use, and as a aging man with a degree that didn't directly help in the current world, he wasn't much of a help aside from any actual freshman.

Havard's desire to be tutored only made Morris fumble with the clothes hangers as he put a pair of pants away. "Oh dear." He hadn't been a romancer anyways and had not put himself in that situation before. Even he couldn't ignore the thin walls and packed rooms of students trying to take teh edge off in one way or another. He just didn't want it brought up around him in conversation. It wasn't like there wasn't anyone in his age bracket and even then he didn't stand a chance.

He barked out a laugh. "The world is ending as they know it - they are not thinking beyond day to day activities, I can assure you." Morris' fumble made Harvard smirk just a bit. But, it wasn't worth pursuing.

"Anyway, I'm done - you about finished? I've got other duty soon."
