GATHERING NECESSITIES
A group of survivors this size needs a lot of food and supplies to... survive. There are any number of places you can scavenge for necessities around the apartment complex during daylight hours if you're by yourself, but to find supplies at night, you're going to need a group. No matter what time you head out, be careful, and remember your umbrella.

Quote:
During the day, your character may search any apartments in the Clearview complex that have been abandoned, nearby bodegas and houses, cars, supermarkets, et cetera, by themselves. At night, they must search in a group, unless they are deliberately disobeying the apartment rules. If they are, they might very well get away with it. Or there might be consequences.

Step One - Grab a Bag
Zelda and October have amassed a decent supply of cloth bags, perfect for holding on to the things you find around the city when being quiet is a priority. Some of them are kind of small, but all of them are more convenient than making do with your arms.

To grab a bag, roll 1d4 and RP stopping by the main office to take one. If you want to skip this step, you will only be able to carry 1 item.

  1. Your bag carries 2 items!
  2. Your bag carries 4 items!
  3. Your bag carries 2 items!
  4. Your bag carries 3 items!

Step Two - Fill That Bag
If you are completing this quest by yourself, you may roll multiple 10-sided dice in each of your posts until you have filled your current bag. If you are completing it with others, roll 1d10 per post.

Please note that you may not ICly keep these items! Whether your character gives them up because they're nice or the security team beats them up daily and takes the items, they will not be translated into personal loot and are only for RP flavor.

  1. You find a dented tin of sardines submerged in a shallow puddle. Mmm.
  2. You find an unopened bottle of water.

  3. You find some new, drab clothing, perfect for camouflaging against the horde.
    ZELDA APPROVES
Upon your return to Clearview, you will be awarded one cocktail umbrella! Please claim it in this thread using the faction quest point claim form located

  4. You find a very small bottle of water, probably one of those ones they give people on planes.
  5. You find a hefty stick. Maybe someone can use it to hold open a door or something.
  6. You find a can of Beefaroni.
    ZELDA APPROVES
Upon your return to Clearview, you will be awarded one cocktail umbrella! Please claim it in this thread using the faction quest point claim form located

  9. You find five Aero bars!
    ZELDA APPROVES

John hated the dull thud his steel-toed boots made on the floors in the apartment complex. The steel and concrete building with it's poorly cared for drywall and plaster and cheap carpeting made him long for the soft creak of the floorboards of his cabin, the nightly groans of timber settling, the occasional sounds of wildlife in the woods... Everything had been alive there, whereas this city was full of death. More every day it seemed.

Maybe he was getting too old for such a drastic lifestyle change, a month in and he was still missing the life he lived. Old dogs and all perhaps.

Barely sparing a grumpy look over his shoulder at his company, Mr. Nordskov unceremoniously grabbed a bag from the office. This time of day it was closed and locked, but there were always bags to be found somewhere, whether left on a chair outside, or hanging off the door handle, anyone who would go out would at least go out equipped if they wanted.

October, on the other hand, loved the apartment. The cheap carpeting and the poor drywall and the creak of the floors was all something he'd been living with for the past eight years, and he loved every single crumbling piece of wood and every shattered window.

The only ting he didn't love was doing work. Work was the worst. Work was effort.

"Do we haveeeee tooooo," October whined, trailing along behind Mr. Nordskov, arms at his side, umbrella gripped in his hand.

Seriously, how on earth did these people manage to survive this long? Even though the world had virtually ended overnight, and they had a full month now to adjust to their new circumstances, there were still kids who had no clue how to work for their food. He could only imagine what things would be like in the University district. More entitled kids probably, albeit ones who were used to surviving off those instant japanese noodle foods.

"Yes." John growled curtly in reply. If they didn't have to go in groups, he would have left this brat back at the apartment. Not that he would be able to go far, there were no good weapon supplies in this super urban hippie city, and he would be doing no hunting when all he could get his hands on was a... canvas bag with faded pink flowers on it.

The old man's scowl deepened, and he led the complaining youth down the street. While his heart still yearned for his old life, at least his observation skills had adapted to the urban jungle he was now a part of. The hawklike intensity of his scowl was not only useful for intimidating those around him. Peering into an abandoned, half-charred car, he managed to snag a tiny bottle of water from the passenger side footwell.

"Here." He said, handing it to the kid. "Don't drink it. Carry it."

John was not very good company. October watched the man with a disgruntled expression on his face - or rather, as disgruntled as he could manage to get, which wasn't very disgruntled at all. Instead, it was just sort of a strange mixture of sleepy and whiny, and he slogged after Mr. Nordskov, clear dejection in his eyes.

"But," he said, in obvious protest. "This sounds like - " He took a breath, as if the word was truly a terrible one. "Effort."

October shuddered and prodded a wall with his umbrella, tagging along after the old man like a puppy on a leash. Technically he could have left him to do as he pleased, but, well, it was a matter of security, and nobody was supposed to be out doing things on their own, so he supposed he had to just keep going. Buddy systems and all that.

"What - hey - "

October's arms automatically caught the water, clutching it, and gave Mr. Nordskov a meaningful look, because he had to carry things?

"No one said anything about carrying things."

John didn't spare a glance at the slouching kid. Whining about effort, before the disaster struck he was probably a layabout who ordered his food over the internet or something. A whole lot might have changed a month ago, but it was a sad thing that someone of his age was more capable of surviving in this inhospitable, 'eat or be eaten' world than today's youth.

"You don't get something for nothing. Effort's the price you pay," he said in a low grumble. "You want to eat, you work. You want a safe place to sleep at night? You work." It was the most the old man had said in probably a week's time.

They passed a convenience store that had long since been looted. Both human and animal scavengers had picked over the remains like a steel and concrete carcass, and there was little left of any good inside. John wasn't even going to go inside. Not worth it, not worth the potential danger. Instead his careful attention was rewarded by the side of the road, where a tin of sardines lay discarded at the gutter. It was still unopened, must have been dropped during the early raids and gotten overlooked since.

He dropped the small tin into the bag.

"But Mr. Nordskovvvvv," October whined, his feet dragging as he followed along behind the old man. "I'd rather just, you know. Lie down. Can't people bring me things? Isn't that a better way of doing things? I could just, you know. Sleep, and people would leave me supplies, this seems like an excellent idea."

The tip of his umbrella hit the ground as he walked, October using it as a sort of cane. He prodded idly at the side of the store, giving it a wary glance before continuing on his way, kicking at the ground with his shoes in a manner more befitting a child.

"Can we go back now?" he asked, glancing around. "It's too bright out here. D'you think you have enough food now?"

Mr. Nordskov was given a very hopeful look.

"And I'd rather be five hours north of here sitting on the porch of my cabin drinking a beer." John replied with a growl. "You find a way to make THAT happen, maybe you can find a way to get by in a world like this one by doing absolutely nothing."

He shook his head in resigned disbelief. Thankfully not all the kids in this district were lazy layabouts, some could rouse enough motivation to get stuff done. It still surprised him that this one had attained some position of leadership, John was pretty sure the only position October wanted was a horizontal, napping position.

They cut through a small park on the way back to the apartments. They would have to try scavenging farther and farther out as time went on, it was not surprising there was little to be had. The old man did stoop and grab a recently fallen branch off the ground, a hefty-sized one that had been damaged in the last storm. It wasn't a rifle, but it would sure deal out some hurt when used correctly. He didn't intend on using it on anything but the infected... But would the threat of a good smack get his companion to stop dragging his feet?

The thought made the old man smile grimly.
