GATHERING UMBRELLAS
Before the outbreak, people really only used umbrellas when it rained. These days, they are highly sought after, at least if you're looking to make your home at Clearview. Every resident must carry three things with them at all times: a key card, knowledge of the current Clearview Salute, and an umbrella. Sometimes umbrellas are lost. It is up to the community to keep their numbers up.

While completing this quest, each roll you make spans one hour. You may only gather umbrellas for five hours at a time (so that's five rolls). Don't ask why; it's something about losing the ability to spot them over time that Zelda probably made up.

You may roll as many 8-sided dice per post as you like, as long as you don't exceed five. One per post might be nice if you're completing this task with others so you can alternate, but that's your call. Place and time are up to you, as long as it's not to far from the building, but be aware that venturing out at night by yourself might get you in trouble. Also up to you: the color and style of the umbrellas you find. Ooo.

  1. You find an umbrella!
  2. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  3. You find an umbrella!
  4. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  5. You find an umbrella!
  6. You find an umbrella!
  7. Sorry, no umbrella for you.
  8. You find an umbrella!

If you find three or more umbrellas in a single trip and post over 100 words in this quest, Zelda will reward you with two cocktail umbrellas back at the apartments! Please claim them in this thread using the faction quest point claim form located here.

It was weird that she'd find more comfort in scavenging all by her lonesome than with a group, actually. It was bright out, around noon probably, so she wasn't too worried. She'd be back at Clearview before dinner. Today's goal were umbrellas! The finicky things that were held high in her community, so she was helping out. That, and she was bored. She could only roll around in her old apartment for so long without going insane, so. There she was. Again.

So after securing her key card, practicing the new salute and securing her personal umbrella, Mel wandered off to a neighboring building that had been (mostly) cleared before to scavenge for some more of the peculiar contraptions. These days it was a precious commodity, which was hilarious because before, back when there were no zombies or whatever they actually were roaming about the city, she'd only ever owned one at a time. Now she had at least two, one in case she lost her own and the other that she always kept on her person. Just in case.

"And right up these steps..." she sang a light tune as she went along, humming an obscure tune that she was making up along the way. Weird girl, some thought. The first apartment she came up to the door was wide open, so she let herself right in. It was crazy bright inside, and there was nothing in plain sight so it was probably...okay. The place looked totally ransacked, but in the past thirty days she'd gotten pretty good at finding hidden gems (or at least she thought so), so she tried her luck. She dug through the closet, in the higher cabinets, behind closet, searched for hidden doors...

And voila! Her eyes shimmered at the sight of a prized umbrella, and a cute one at that. Once she secured it she glanced around, noting that she was in a child's room. There was a heavy blood stain on the bed where the child's head should have been...

"Damnit..." she muttered as she rushed out of the room. A tear had slipped past her hand as she wiped furiously at her eyes. Memories had flooded her mind of her own siblings. Her family...she hadn't thought of them in a while, just to keep from crying herself to sleep every night. It was mostly effective. Mostly.

The next few hours blazed by, but she was careful not to train her eyes on any heavy red stains or streaks or splatters on any walls. The next couple of hours yielded nothing, but the last couple she hit the jackpot! Two more umbrellas in the last two hours before she headed home. They were standard fair and pretty boring--she found one in a closet under a box and the other stashed away in the back of a filing cabinet, of all places--but umbrellas were umbrellas!

Mel held fast to her prizes and, once she was out of the building and home base was in sight, jogged her way back to Clearview.
