It was frustrating, it was annoying, it was aggravating, it was angering, it was… Rhiannon was running out of adjective for how she felt. She had been at this for almost twenty minutes as she pranced and danced along. Who had decided that leaving Arianwyn behind was a good idea? Really, what had they been thinking? SO Rhiannon had taken it upon herself to go get the pale princess. She must be so confused and lost. The elders had said it was the right thing to do, but Rhiannon didn’t understand. How had it had been better for her to stay, by herself, in an area that was dangerous enough to force a Kalona herd to leave? Rhiannon would have been muttering to herself if that weren’t below her.

Rhiannon had slipped away from the herd earlier that week and was tracing her way back to the forest based on her memory of landmarks. She had a good memory and wasn’t worried about losing her way. And anything but a skinwalker should know better than to mess with a Kalona, even a smallish one, so Rhiannon wasn’t worried about that either. What she was worried was that Arianwyn wouldn’t be there when she got back. It had been a while because Rhiannon had to wait until she was a bit older to go. It would have been stupid of her to not wait. But that waiting had been so hard. Her best friend was completely alone. That wasn’t the way it was supposed to be.

The river that she was about to cross was wide and deep. And she remembered being warned about alligators possibly living in it. But she hadn’t seen any on her first trip across and was prepared to make the second trip. She just had to find the shallow part again. It had been by the tree with the grizzled face… on the other side of the river. What had it been over here again? Oh yes, a rock that looked like a sleeping mountain lion. Skipping up the river edge, Rhiannon kept an eye out for the rock.

Rock that looks like a rabbit. Rock that looks like cloud. Rock that looks like a… rock. Finally she found the rock that looks like a mountain lion. She gave it a fond pat with her tail as she passed it and began down the riverbank. Prancing into the water, Rhiannon mentally scowled at getting her ribbons wet. But she wouldn’t turn back for anything. She would find her friend and get Arianwyn back to the rest of the herd.

She wasn’t even half way across the river when she learned that alligators did in fact live in the river, and that they weren’t at all afraid for coming up to a Kalona.

“Hi! Hi, hi, hi, hi! You look like me! Let’s be friends!” Dulcibella was so excited. She had never seen anything that looked like her coloring before. She came right up to the front of the Soquili and looked up, smiling.

…what the…? Rhiannon had been about to dance backwards, but at those words she aborted that and only moved one hoof. She stared down at the alligator in surprise. The alligator was right, they did look at each other, but so what?

“No, go away.” Rhiannon said shortly. “I need to go find my actually friend.” She huffed and prepared to step around the alligator.

Dulcibella moved over to block her new friend from leaving. “I’m Dulcibella! I could help you find your friend!”

Rhiannon seriously considered putting her hoof down anyway, and hard. It would have at least hurt the weird gator, but then she realized the gator would probably attack then. As friendly as this strange being seemed to be trying to be, Rhiannon was suspicious. She carefully settled her hoof beside the gator, ready to respond if the gator attacked. “I don’t need help.” She said haughtily instead.

”But it would be lonely. We could do it together!” Dulcibella wiggled her tail in excitement.

Rhiannon was trying to figure out how to get out of this situation when something occurred to her. Why could she understand the alligator? Usually one had to be bonded as a familiar for that to happen… Damn those stars. Stupid wishing stars, they weren’t supposed to actually do it. It hade been a dare and a joke. Realizing that there was no way out of this Rhiannon sighed. Because this was something beyond her control, and that irked her so much.

“Whatever.” She said dismmisively. “But you better keep up.”

”Yay!”
