Some info about Mia:

Child version
Character Name: Mia Gabrielle Lobert

Character Appearance (Human): Mia is rather small girl to her age, mostly because of her mother's genes (her mother is small woman). She is pretty average, not too chubby, even though her mother had a habit to spoil her with candies and cakes. Her good shape is mostly because of her father raised her to active life (took her on walking trips, teached her to swim and all that stuff).

Her eyes are light blue and have milky white cover over them but most of the time, she wears sun glasses. Those glasses are typically girly looking, in both colors and shapes.
Her hair is deep brown, shiny and strong, and a bit curly. Her mother liked to brush it and make it pretty (to ponytails and braids).
Her clothing fashion goes along the same line. Pretty dresses in girly colors and even jewelry (plastic or real, depending on how formal she is dressed).

Character Personality: Mia is shy girl, mostly because she feels embarrased of her difference, being blind. She was bullied in school and that has left it's scars in her. She feels kind of out of place if she is in un-familiar environment or near other kids. However, with adults, especially familiar and kind ones, she is outspoken, friendly, curious little sweetheart.

Mia has learned to spend time alone, without friends of her age. She likes to read (braille) books that are either fairytales or scientific books about nature or outerspace. She, of course doesn't know what those kind of things look like but it lets her learn something new each day, even it is just a theory. It also gives her hope, some kind of destination, to understand the nature fully sometime... when she can see.

When her interest towards nature came out, her mother figured a cute idea to get her some practical information about the environment around her. She started to collect all kind of animal plushies for her, from cat plushies to dolphins and frogs. This way, Mia got some of the feel what each animal would look like (and in the same, get some imaginary friends that helped her to grow, or if nothing else, let her some way to tell her worries to someone). And when she got older, she started to copy those plushies into little plasticine sculptings, her mother's support helping her.

Character Background: Mia's family is wealthy, her father is a gym teacher and her mother business manager in well-managing mobile phone company so she was able to get many helping tools for blind and get in good school where teachers had experience of blind people. But even the best schools can (and will) have faults. Mia got picked by bullies and while she had friends, the bullying hurt her. Although her friends supported her (her family didn't know, Mia didn't want them to know), she felt guilty for her difference and like she would have been burden to others.

Not only this, her parents had disagreement about Mia's raising methods, especially after her little sister was born. The new situation caused a lot of confusion, jealousy and fights whose all affected into Mia.

Of course, her whole life wasn't miserable. Her family loved (and still love) her and she got friends in school. Her teachers were supportive as well as her doctor. She was rather happy until her doctor got retired.....

How does your Character get to/why was your character chosen for the Island? Her doctor got replaced by Steve Lake, a nice guy who was aware about Feral Labs and their search for subjects for experienmental project to get back a vision sense for blind person. Moreau had placed the age range to be 10+ years, knowing already that giving a serum into 10 years old child (Cody) would be relatevily safe. Steve offered the opportunity to Mia's family because of they were the first ones who had money for the expensive experienment, telling them about riskes of death but if the experienment would success, Mia would have good changes to learn needed skills (like reading/writing) for getting any career she wishes. Mia's life would be of course insured.

This caused another burst of fight because Mister Lobert was in side of the doctor and Mrs. Lobert wanted Mia to stay home. Finally, Mia's father won the argue.

What Animal Serum do you want?: Barn owl (Tyto alba)

Describe your ideal 100% appearance: I don't have much ideal appearance so I give free hands to the artist, if that's possible of course. If not, I need to think about something. But really, I trust on artist in this case.

Why this animal/plant for your character?: Mia needs to become to an animal that has good vision senses because Moreau's purpose is to give her new eyes so that can see. Best option for this is the animal that has good vision. Owls are widely known about their good vision senses and according this one website I found, barn owls have the best sight of animal kingdom. They are nocturnal so their night vision is good but they also have good daylight vision.

What do you think really makes this concept? I want Mia to get in island because I'm very eager to RP her sight developing. I find it very interesting and fascinating. It also gives me much RP potential to RP her after her 100% stage when her sight is fully developed and she learns new kind of social skills. I also find child character challenging and fun. She would also bring some drama into the island, Moreau is bringing a child there again! I know some might not like the idea but I'm willing to take that risk. I enjoy (and have experience of) RPing (realistically) child characters.

Adult version, not ready yet
Name: Mia Gabrielle Lobert

Concept: Blind gothic-like girl

Appearance:

Same goes with her shiny, strong, deep black hair. Her mother likes to brush her hair and make it look pretty. This doesn't bother Mia though. She likes when someone brushes her hair. It feels comfortable. And what comes to clothing, as long they feel good, she is content.

Personality: Although Mia is a "goth", she isn't pessimistic loner who only angsts in her room and plays sad melodies with her flute. Yes, she has her downtimes, when she would prefer to be alone, but that's only one side of her. The other side is bright and talkative, always optimistic. She is kind and good listener. Mia is a bit shy, mostly because she is blind and when you can't see someone, that's automatically hard to interact with others. She knows that she is different and that's making her sad. That is one of those reasons why she wants to see.

And that's why she fights so hard. She talks much, touches people, communicates with them in every other way that she can without her sight. She is a strong girl. She has to be.

Background: Mia's childhood was pretty much normal, well, as normal as blind girl can have. Her parents work in museum. Mia comes from a little wealthier than the average family. She has been blind (though, she can 'feel' strong flashes of light) as long she can remember. Her mother and father loved her dearly but of course, a handicapped girl is a bit harder to take care of and easy prey for mean bullies so... Mia suffers sometimes from depression. Luckily, she has some That's why she wants her sight back so desperately. She wants to be a good girl.

Why comes to island: Her doctor was informed about this great opportunity to get someone's sight back. This caused much argue between mother and father but finally they agreed to jump to the opportunity. She would get her sight and wouldn't be gone for long after. Perhaps she would find new friends in there too....And her life is insured, so it's 'safe'.

What Mia can do

- Mia can count. I'm not sure how long yet, but she can count to ten. Counting is fun game for her, to try remember every single number or word in order. She doesn't know what these numbers will look like, she only knows what they sound like.

- Mia can walk from place A to place B by herself as long she had went the same path at least few times. Yes, she needs a little guidance of finding things but she learns fast.

More coming...

I know the biggest problem of this character. I am flexible and can change anything but one thing. And that thing is her blindness. The whole concept is about bringing the sight for the blind. Her being a kid would be just easier for me to roleplay because I would know her mental development stage better. But I can change her age if it bothers too much, just like everything else that seems unfitting. Suggestions? Things I should think still?

The idea of playing a little girl is an interesting one, though be prepared to have mixed reactions to it. Some people might find it offensive, others might find it wildly interesting.

My biggest problem with the concept is the choice of animal. Rabbit seems kind of random because while their vision is good, they aren't really known for having good vision. In fact, while rabbits can see far distances well, close up they are still virtually blind! Seems kind of odd to me that that would be the first animal to come to mind.

I would suggest, personally, a raptor (bird of prey) of some sort, which on a whole are believed to have vision 8x that of a normal human. While some hawks still have trouble seeing close up, most eagles and owls can not only see far away but focus their vision on things close, much like a human would use reading glasses for.

Also, many diurnal predatory mammals have good vision. A random fact I learned by researching animal eyesight was that greyhounds have the best eyesight of domesticad dog. ^_^

Thats only a suggestion, of course, but I think a different animal more universally known for having good eyes might be more apt to your character.

As for concept/how she got to the island - yes, the blind thing is cool. And makes a lot of sense why Moreau would think she was a good test subject. He's already learned that turning a deaf woman into a fox can regen her hearing, it makes sense he would be interested in turning a girl into an animal to fix her blindness. However HOW she gets to the island needs a bit of tweaking. Mostly, her doctor wouldn't know about the island unless he was getting tested at Feral Labs, which is possible. BUT - they would exactly, erm, ask her parents to send her there. Mostly because, what were they planning to tell them in two weeks when she didn't come back? Or she never called? Or wrote.. do you see where I'm going?

They would either have to kidnap her, or fake her death or dissapearance. Maybe the helicopter that was transporting her to the facility "crashed"? (obviously not, but thats what Feral Labs would tell her parents, then perhaps give them a nice settlement. Basically, you need to tie up the loose ends somehow.

Island of Moreau
Ty-chan
surprised

I'm actually really surprised that the choice of animal seems to be your biggest problem. Because the rabbit idea was given by Hige to me and I really thought that my character's age would be a big problem.

Sure. I can change her serum animal. It's no problem. I'll check out for raptors/predators and decide then what to go for.

And what comes to reason why her parents wouldn't go search for her, I have thought something like this. Her parents would been told that the operation would be risky and that's why her life would be insured. Though, the helicopter crash works too.

Other option I have thought, would be purely accidental way, like plane/ship crash/accident. Though she would be very lucky to survive from something like that. Yet, it could be fun to see what would happen if some of islanders would find her before the lab staff. Would they try to protect her from Moreau and injection?

Though, kidnapping sounds interesting too. I could actually imagine how that would happen.

Either way, I want to say thanks for you pointing out things that need more thinking, your good suggestions and your time. I have to say that I was prepared to get slightly upset but now I'm smiling and very inspired to improve this character so she would be more fitting to the island.

Glad it helped. I've heard you've had concerns about the little girl aspect. Again, its a personal decision, just be prepared about having some people not agree with it. Its a grey area, but if you're willing to accept that, more power to you.

As for how she got to the island:
Quote:
Her parents would been told that the operation would be risky and that's why her life would be insured.

This actually makes a LOT of sense. Its quiet and discreet, and would leave her parents with closure.

Ty-chan
I was actually hesitant to create a child character at first myself too. I'm actually still between child and adult. Both have their good and bad sides.

If I go for the child character, I definately will face critique from some people. But thinking of the physical/mental/social development will be easier because I start thinking them from as early as babies and toddlers and the older Mia is, the more thinking her development stages take. I want that Mia would be in realistic stage of them. Part of me is proud of this concept the way it is now. I mean, this is a good concept for a child character. I have done much work for it. And this is quite big challenge. If I can RP her well, I can be proud of myself.

If I go for the adult character, the welcome of players of other islanders is warmer. Also, some RP options would be available, like romance. But in the same time, I feel that adult Mia would miss something that child Mia has. I can't picture adult Mia so playful or so outspoken or colorful as child Mia would be. She would be more calm as adult, I think. And the development stages would need more thinking. Not only there is childhood but teen age too. And teen age is important. The identity gets reformed then. Of corse, I could make her be greatly behind in her development but wouldn't she resemble Colche too much then?

I'm actually willing to accept either one. Part of me wants to go for the child, part of me wants to go for the adult (for personal reasons also, I'm not feeling pressures by others opinions... or maybe I'm a little, otherwise I wouldn't have seriously re-thought the adult option). Which one seems the best... You staff members can decide (if/when the time comes, this can be left as open area). Or maybe I could create the adult version of Mia, RP her in non-cannon RP threads as child in some threads and as adult in some threads. And then when I have got the feel of both, decide which one feels more right. You know, test the waters a bit. Would that be a good idea?

...

Heh. I think her way to come to island would be settled then. The idea of this "risky operation" came probably from my real life "experience" (I couldn't think better word for this). I have diabetes and I have heard of treatment where you get your ill cells replaced by healthy ones. This treatment is still in it's testing phase so it's not available in public. Mia's treatment could have the similar feel.
