She was feeling a little frazzled after school that evening, attempting to figure out what she was going to write her paper on. The actual writing part she wasn't too worried about. But finding just the right topic? Kodi sighed at herself, switching the song on her iPod from Stronger (Kelly Clarkson) to Welcome Home (Coheed and Cambria). Checking her phone for the time, she groaned. It was later than she'd thought. And probably too late to pick up any food. Because she was too distracted tonight to make anything herself. And, if she was being perfectly honest, she preferred eating out as it let her be around other people. Instead of sitting at home alone.

It just so happened that she was passing by her favorite little deli and it made her pause. They were still open! Though glancing at the hours of operation, not for much longer and she was really cutting it close. But an Italian sub with a cookie sounded fabulous.

Maybe they wouldn't be so mad, since she was a regular? She could hope, right?

Kodi slipped inside the deli, smiling a little apologetically. "Would I be being a pain, if I placed an order real quick?" She asked the young man (who was a familiar face here) behind the counter. "I'll be fast, I swear!" She added.

Hitch was in the middle of cleaning one of the slicers, his hair tucked and tied back under his stupid hat (although it beat a hair net), poking his tongue out of the side of his mouth as he scrubbed an especially bitchy little patch of dried out cheese. There was one machine left, now, although his coworkers had vanished to parts unknown - probably out back to smoke as usual. Pretty ******** annoying so close to closing, especially when he'd ******** kill for a cigarette after a day like today, but you know. Not like they gave a s**t.

So naturally, it was left all up for him to help the girl - and he flashed her a smile that was more practiced than honest, because really, she was a sweet enough girl and all (of course he ******** knew her), but it was just so ******** late. He wasn't even planning on a patrol as Eurydike tonight, just dinner, Tolliver, bed, and maybe not in that order.

Still. "Kodi. S'been a few days. Startin' to think you starved, " still practiced, but customers liked a sense of familiarity. That he could offer. "Italian sub an' a cookie, right? We're outta the kind with the rainbow sprinkles, but we got chocolate. That work for you?"

Seeing him cleaning made her feel twice as bad about stopping in so close to closing time. She'd definitely be sure to leave him a nice tip. Especially since he seemed to be here alone tonight? Or at least, there was no one else in sight.

"Probably would have tonight, if I hadn't stopped by." She admitted, giving him a friendly smile. "That is totally fine and perfect! I can't be picky at this hour. And I appreciate it. I'm really really sorry to stop in so close to closing for you, too." As far as she could tell, he was in a cheery enough mood. Which made her feel a little less horrible. But only a little.

Frowning a little as she looked around, she gave him a look. "There's normally at least two or three of you. Don't tell me you got the short end of the stick!" Maybe she could help him a little? As thanks for making her a sub after cleaning a majority of everything? "Anything I could do to help you finish up here, since you're awesome and making me a sub real quick?"

His forced cheer was a little less forced at her apology, and he clicked his tongue, whipping off his gloves and waving at her dismissively. "No big. I know you, you ain't crazy picky or nothin' - you sure you don't want a second one? I can make it dry, give you the dressin' in a container, should tide you over tomorrow."

He went to wash his hands real quick, audibly snorting at the question about why he was alone. "Apparently the need to smoke's more important than gettin' our asses home on time - uh, sorry, miss." Had to remember where he was. It might be late, but he couldn't go slipping up and cursing a mile a minute at a customer. Never knew with these people. "Anyway, they'll turn back up for close, so don't worry about it. Serves 'em right for duckin' out anyway."

The offer was surprisingly touching, and his cheeks burned faintly, but he laughed as he grabbed the bread and set to work. "Appreciate it Kodi, but I'd get in trouble for that. Cameras an' all. These machines could hurt someone if they weren't careful, so it's a liability for the company an' all." He arched a brow and flashed her a smirk. "I can throw in a pickle for offerin' though."

Okay so she probably should have been a little more embarrassed at how well he knew her order. But she wasn't it. More relieved, actually. Because it meant he wouldn't have to waste any more time waiting for her to pick and choose stuff. He did make her chuckle a little. "I could always try to live up to higher standards!" She teased, considering his suggestion. "I don't want to make you work any more than you already are!" Yes. Yes she would like a second one but saying it was making her feel guilty.

Kodi rolled her eyes a little. "Smoke breaks. It's what we're really hired on for." And then it was her turn to snort at him. "Just Kodi. I ain't no 'miss' just yet!" She smiled, rolling back on her heels with her hands folded behind her. "So then maybe you can leave a few minutes earlier, since you'll be done. Or... you can always make them clean this up." She indicated everything he had just about finished cleaning. Which made her feel guilty all over again.

"A pickle would be awesome. But I still feel guilty for catchin' you at this hour." She moved to lean against the counter, watching him work and glancing in the general direction of the back door. Then shot him a look again. "If they got cameras and all here... why don't those guys get in trouble?" She countered with a smirk of her own. Not that she doubted his words, but he was actually nice to talk with.

"They should give you a raise." She went on. "If I get any of those surveys on my receipt, you bet I'll fill it out and give you five stars."

Oh god she hoped that didn't sound like she was flirting! She totally wasn't. Not that he wasn't cute or anything. But... ah crap! Her cheeks felt a little warm so she pretended to look at something else. Like a speck on the counter he missed.

"So you're sayin' my stuff ain't high standard?" He was kidding, of course, flashing her a roguish smile over his shoulder just so she knew he was full of it. "'Sides, it's nothing. Just gotta double what I'm slicin', " and there were a few things to slice, but not a whole lot of each. It was just about getting the right amount for the sandwiches - too much many it'd be over packed, too little meant something would go unnoticed and throw off the whole balance of the sandwich and... basically he'd made a lot of ******** sandwiches in his life okay? Even if sandwiches weren't the same as making a full meal, he still enjoyed doing it, especially more than just slicing pounds of shaved meat for people.

He snorted, then - "Okay then, Kodi, " but maybe she wasn't so far off the mark. Maybe he should just ******** leave and let those ******** just deal with the mess on their own. "It'd serve 'em right if I did, huh?" he grunted with a low peal of laughter, and he moved fast at least - the meat was already cut, just had to put it all together on the bread now, make it look all nicey-nice -

A pickle would be nothing. The cookie would be nothing. The rest was (not literally) cake. Unable to help himself, Hitch just laughed again as he set to work assembling the sandwiches. "Ah, see, but that'd be fair, an' can't have the system workin' in my favor, y'know - god ********' - god forbid, " and he amended that one a little later, but whatever. She hadn't flipped out the first time, wasn't like there was anyone here to call him on it anyway.

Then, just as he was finishing up and starting to wrap the sandwiches, she said that - and Hitch flashed her a quizzical look with a somewhat bewildered quirk of his lips that quickly devolved into a more playful smile.

Was she flirting? - didn't really matter if she was, although a few months ago it would've - he would've been all tense and weird about it, trying to win her over for an uncomfortable night that wouldn't ******** go anywhere. Now? It was okay. It was kind of endearing, almost, for the sheer fact that it was harmless. Like a bee that'd lost its sting.

"Too bad we don't - with all the times you come in, I'd be ********' glowin' by now, " he teased, wrapping everything up all nice and neat for her. Two sandwiches, cookie, and a pickle, plus some dressing on the side for tomorrow. All per what she wanted and what she didn't know she wanted, with some napkins and paper plates and plastic knives to go with it. "Anythin' else, Kodi? - you good on drinks?"

Kodi blushed and went to stammer something about that's totally not what she meant! Until she saw that smile he threw over his shoulder and then she relaxed. The butthead! "Well.. I mean, it's not like I have any other choices of places to go... " She tossed out there casually, trying to keep from grinning.

"Damn right it would." She nodded. The lazy bums that they were. Come to think of it... she really couldn't think of any time she'd seen much of the other employees. Poor Hitch.

She just snorted and muttered something under her breath. Definitely filing one of those surveys out and complaining about the other workers. Praising Hitch for all his hard work of course. It really wasn't fair...

"What system isn't corrupt, though?" Kodi sighed, leaning on the counter as he was finishing up the sandwiches. And pretending she hadn't sounded like an idiot and possibly flirting. God! Not that Hitch wasn't cute... he was. But she wasn't interested and... play it cool. Right. Why was he smiling?

Change of topic! Or not. "Well maybe its a good thing you don't then." She laughed, and then shook her head. "No drink! I'm good on that, thanks!" Pulling her bag around she dug out some cash to pay for her food. "Hopefully you can close it all up now. I can always go block the door so no more last minute stragglers wander in." Like she did. At least she had food for dinner now!

But she still had to walk the rest of the way home before she could sit down and enjoy it.

Hitch had descended into a series of low chuckles and head shakes. "There's none, " he remarked almost too lightly on finishing up, although there was a veiled layer of bitterness just beneath the surface. "No system that is incapable of being corrupt."

He laughed, then, as he waved her off. "Right, right - thanks for your service, Kodi, always appreciated, " and he gave a mock salute with a smirk as he set about pulling his s**t together real quick - because seriously, ******** this, the other guys could clean up. He barked a few hasty orders to them in the back before stepping out.

The walk home wasn't a long one, lucky for him - he spotted Kodi up ahead but didn't bother her, figuring they'd part ways soon enough. Plenty of apartments around here. He went ahead and lit up a cigarette, and the rush of nicotine in his lungs did a damn good job of washing away some of the day's stress.

She just laughed and waved at him as she exited the building. Outside, she paused only long enough to zip up her bag before heading towards her apartment complex. And trying really hard to ignore the rumble in her stomach. Man, that sandwich sure sounded so good right now. But she wouldn't eat it until she was home and working on homework. Maybe. Okay, just home and relaxing then.

That prickle at the back of her neck had her glance over her shoulder finally as she cut across the street towards her complex. Was that... Hitch? A laugh bubbled up.

"So you did leave them, didn't ya?" Good for him! Wait... why was he going this way too? He wasn't, like, following her or anything? Was he?!

So she'd noticed him. Hitch's lips quirked in a smirk around his cigarette, and he crossed his arms neatly over his chest. "Yeah. I said ******** 'em." Because he was off the clock now and that meant cursing was right back on the table, customer or not; really though, it was Kodi. He doubted she was about to flip her s**t over it.

His brow quirked, though. "So, uh. You live nearby or somethin'?" Given they were both walking the same way and all... he could've just left well enough alone, but it was a little weird.
