Maleńki had found life in Lux's clutches to be more tolerable lately. As her numbers grew, he was able to melt further and further into the shadows. Staying on the outskirts of her vision and keeping to himself and the few soquili that he socialized with in this bitter motley of evil beings and prisoners had become easier as time went on. He thought it would be impossible to continue living under her rule, but somehow she had found someone that not only tolerated her cruelty, but enjoyed it. And for once, Lux had children that were her own flesh and blood - children that she did not steal. Mal still felt bitter over the 'what could have been'. If Lux had not stolen him away from a potentially perfect and loving family. He often wondered what his real parents were like, but he would never seek them out. To do so would draw Lux's attention to them, and he would never willingly subject someone to what he had gone through and was still going through.

Today was a quiet day, which was a rarity around here. Lux and her hell-spawn, known as Conqueror, had gone off to talk of what areas they would scout to raid next, and Jellyfish - ... Mal stopped that thought. No, her name was not Jellyfish. Her name was Death... but Mal was sure that if she had the life she was supposed to have, she would be named after a fish like Anchovy and her other siblings. Mal had given Death and her brother fish nicknames to pay homage to their true parents, but he didn't dare speak them aloud.

He shook his head. Lux and Conqueror were off scheming, while Death was off doing her own scouting with one of the new recruits, Alik. He didn't know where Lux's other children or lover had gone, but they didn't seem to be in the large scorched clearing that made up their camp. He did spot Sugar Pie, however, and he walked over to stand beside her. She was letting one of the raccoons spread a salve on a fiery red slice that seemed to glow against her side.

"Are you okay, Sugar?" he asked sadly.

Sugar stared at the dirt in front of her as her body rested on the cool ground. Her stringy blue hair had escaped the braid that her raccoon friend had hastily gathered it into, and it was now hanging loosely in gnarled blood-crusted strands. She should be used to this by now. Ever since she had signed her soul away to Lux Flamma, she had been nothing but a pawn and glorified punching bag for the 'suti and her band of evil thieving goons. There were small saving graces. Staying here ensured her twin sister's safety and the safety of Candy's mate and family. The more soquili that Lux recruited, the less noticeable Sugar was. And Sugar had made tentative friendships with those that were here against their will and had been dragged into this mess just like she had been. Speaking of friends. Her cracked lips stretched into a small smile as Maleńki approached.

"I'm fine, Mal," she said. "It doesn't happen so often anymore, you know that,"

She'd been careful, but today she had made the mistake of allowing one of the raccoons to style her hair. The raccoon had been so happy to work with Sugar's long blue locks, and had crafted her hair into a brilliant braided up-do. Lux's hellion of a daughter had spotted the difference in her appearance immediately and had sniffed her out of the crowd like a vicious bloodhound. The monster they called Death had followed behind her. Conqueror had struck Sugar to the ground, and Sugar had assumed her usual position of curling into a small ball to lessen the hurt of the blows and protect her vital organs. Conqueror had laughed and stomped on her legs and ribs a few times, before ordering Death to fix her hair. Instantly claws were tearing at the raccoon's creation, slicing her scalp as they tore through braids and small ties . Sugar stared at the ground as the onslaught of pain continued. This was her fault. She should have kept to her routine. Remain unnoticed and unimportant. She laid prone on the ground until Conqueror was satisfied with the mess her hair had become and the blood and bruises marring her skin. She had continued to lay there until the coast was clear and her raccoon friend had run to her side crying and begging for her forgiveness. Sugar had just smiled and asked for help patching up. She was used to this.

Mal frowned. He didn't like it when Sugar was hurt. And he really didn't like that she had become so used to it. He had been hoping... planning something that could get them both killed, but it was something he was close to implementing. Lux's children were becoming too much. They were brutal and ruthless towards those that they did not consider their equal. Prisoners held little importance and were nothing but bodies to them. Lux's son was unhinged and had a taste for the hearts of mares. Because of this, the number of female prisoners was dwindling. Mal wondered when Sugar would show up on his bloody radar. Conqueror was just awful. Lux had taken Conqueror under her wing, and the large mare had become worse than Lux in her cruelty to others and her need to show her power over those she considered weak. Word around the camp was that Lux and Conqueror were planning something big. That would be their chance. He looked around, before lowering his voice.

"We need to leave... soon," he whispered.

Sugar felt a tiny glimmer of hope float into her conscious and stomped it down. They had tried to leave once and it had not gone well... at all. She still had the scars to prove it. And she couldn't leave or her sister... her sister would be in danger.

"I... I... We can't!" she hissed, looking around them for any one that might be listening. "There's no way we'd make it,"

While Lux's army growing had given her more safety because of the numbers, it had also increased the amount of minions patrolling their borders. It was hopeless. They were stuck.

"This is dumb," Alik whined, dragging his claws in the mud. "How many times do we need to walk around in a circle? Trust me, no one is itching to walk into Lux's clutches! Do we need all this patrol s**t? Uggggggggh,"

The hippogryph flopped to the ground dramatically and stared at the golden eye that was now at his eye-level and looking back at him, unamused.

"Deathy darling, come ooon. Can't we just say we're patrolling? How many times have they stuck us together and how many times have we actually done anything worth while?"

At this point, Death had become used to Alik and his behavior. It was odd to her that in the beginning hey had been so tense. Recently, he was the only one that spoke with her - and he spoke with her like she was a normal mare, not a monster. Her patrols with Alik had become strangely comforting, and she had become unsure of their relationship. Death did not have friends. She never had a friend. Was this what friendship felt like?

Alik started whining and Death heaved a sigh, leveling him with her golden stare.

"Mother says-" she stopped. Mother actually had not said a whole lot to her lately. Instead, Lux had been doting upon her other children. Death had been cast off on scouting and perimeter duty for the majority of her sibling's upbringing. She had started feeling the loneliness of her childhood creep back over her. No one talking to her. Everyone sneering at her because she was disgusting. The beast.

She wasn't sure what she had done to displease Mother, but she would try her hardest to overcome the loneliness and jealousy and prove herself. If that meant patrolling until her claws splintered and her hooves ached, so be it.

Alik squinted as Death stopped talking and spaced out on him. Sadly, this was a normal occurrence. He sighed.

"Death, girl, you gotta get out of your head," he groaned. "Your mother says a lot of things. Do we really have to listen to it all? I'm pretty sure she told that one cerynei that he should light himself on fire the other day. Did the cerynei light himself on fire? No,"

He rolled onto his back and stared up at the sky. It was cloudy and the wind was cold. Alik was pretty sure it was going to storm. Being wet and slopping through mud was not on his to do list.

"Come oooon. It's going to rain. Can we at least patrol a dry safe zone? Like a cave? I know you don't like it when your eye sockets fill up with water. Remember the incident at the lake with the fish? Because I remember."

Death shook her skeletal head, taking in Alik's words. Her mother did say a lot of harsh things... She shrugged and looked at up towards the sky the best she could with her eye. It did look like a storm was brewing. At the mention of the lake incident, she glared back down at Alik, who was sprawled on the ground like a foal.

"Get up," she growled. "There is a cave nearby where we can wait out the storm,"
