Why do you believe in astrology?
This question, and those connected to it, have been troubling me for some time. I've started a couple of threads in various gaian forums about astrology and whether or not people believe in it, and every time I get the same range of responses. It's like hitting a brick wall, and it's really, really frustrating.
There are all the standard responses, people pointing out that the constelations no longer match the period of time we call a given sign, the fact that at the time of birth, the doctor has a greater gravitational effect on an infant than does mars, etc. Then there are those that just say "it's a pseudoscience" or "people only believe in it because they're gullible and because they want it to be true for comfort" and so on. Time after time I try to argue astrology's case, but no matter what evidence I cite, it makes no difference. It seems People just don't want to give it a chance.
So, why do you believe in it? What is it that, to you, justifies astrology's classification in your mind as something that is true, rather than some pile of superstitious, unfounded psudoscience?
For me, it's the 4th poll option. I wasn't bruoght up believing in it, but at the same time I was never told it wasn't true. Through investigation of in depth natal astrology, I gradually came to the conclusion that it was accurate, that there were some truly amazing predictions ringing true time and time again, and that this was something that, while I had no idea of how it worked, I was willing to say that I believed in it.
So, what about you? Why do you believe?

I look at Astrology from a hobbyist's perspective. My mom talked about it a lot growing up as something that was to be considered as fact. Not from a prediction aspect, but definitely a personality aspect. "Well, he's a Saggitarius, that's why." Things like that. And, like you, it's just something I've noticed over the years. People fom the same sign *tend* to have the same personality traits. Yes, everyone is different, but then, everyone's charts are different. 3nodding The further one delves, the more is learned about that person, I think.
There's a lot of superstition in my family. Her dad's side is originally from what was Austria-Hungary, Gypsy stock, Bohunks, my grandfather would say. Lots of really cool paranormal stories in our past, and being an Aquarius, I have a tendency to take interest in occult subjects and to take up with oddball individuals--lol. wink cool (At least that's what Woolfolk said.) blaugh

I guess I sort of see it as symbolic somehow. That astrology represents something that isn't physically tied to the planets (because there have been changes in the skies over the years) but is easy to conceptualize that way.
The more I understand myself, the more I can see certain personality traits represented in my chart. The stereotypically insecure Cancer sun, a need to express my feelings, thoughts, and ideas (fifth house Leo Mercury), unnatural good luck (Jupiter conjunct the AC), a tendency towards Virgos (Virgo DC), a chameleon personality-type (Pisces moon, rising). Etc. It all sort of...works. And I can see it in other people's charts, too, but obviously I understand myself better than anyone.

I believe because it all just sort of fits...and if something isn't true, I can usually pin point the source of misinformation. I think it's important to filter out all the bullshit because I've seen some astrology sites that were just complete crap and people shold be ashamed of it. They were totally talking out of their own asses.

This is actually funny but I got interseted in it by watching Sailor Moon. But I have always been a star gazer when ever I would be in the car I would just sit and look out the window when all the stars were out.

I got interested because of Sailormoon. Looking at the planets and everything. I really got into it when I was in the 9th grade, which was last year ^_^.

astrology is a new thing to me really. I've only really believed in it for about 2 or 3 years. Astrology is where I get my support from in life. Religion just isn't for me, and I find many faults with it, but when I found astrology, it became my "religion"...I believe that the universe governs our lives, moods and what happens, and I believe that you can also speak to the universe as if in prayer. It doesn't always gives us what we want, but it gives us what we need I believe. There's one astrology I always look at daily, and that's Jonathan Cainer, and I started looking at it for support at first, not really thinking that much of it...but there have been so many times that his readings have been correct...and I mean, not just generalised..really quite true, that I believe in it now. It's not correct 100% of the time, but I do believe it's correct when it matters most. Basically, I believe in astrology for the support and comfort it gives me in life.

I believe that everything, even lies, have a thread of truth in them. So even is astrology is wrong in some respects, there will always be that thread of truth within it. Okay, anywho...
I believe in astrology because when my mother got me into it I found out lots of truth about myself & the people around. Come on. Books just don't randomly describe yourself down to the dot without truth in it!

I respect people who don't believe in it but they lose my respect when they b***h me out like that!! twisted *Sighs* Do you guys ever get that?

I went with the 4th poll option as well.
I'm the kind of person who only believes in something if time and time again I keep recieving truth from it.
Astrology has been keeping that up nicely. Therefore I lack a reason to not believe in it.

I feel like astrology is a lot of fun to do. it's really interesting that these were psycho-analysis made 100s of yrs ago by other people who put their time and effort on them. even more amazing how some of the traits that they noted are strongly evident in some people.

The fourth option for me.
I didn't like astrology when I was little because I wanted to be an earth sign and I am a pisces. My best friend and I were into wicca and sailor moon so we started reading about it more when we were in, I think, 6th grade. Ever since then, we've both been very fond of astrology because it just has this crazy habit of being accurate over and over again.
Also, most people who criticize astrology think that it is all about newspaper horoscopes and predicting the future. Most of them don't even know their own sun sign, or what a sun sign is. They also think that it's too general and sign descriptions can apply to anyone. I find the opposite is true! When you get into natal charts, everything becomes very specific and complicated.
I also think it's a lot of fun. 3nodding
