tab Lok'dim'fi... (Little darling) She whispered to her spider as they arrived in the first of the city's farm areas. Magnolia city was quite large compared to what the troll was used to...but then, she had only lived outside her village for a short time span. Everything seemed big, all the people so estranged from one another-everything felt impersonal. Most people wouldn't judge or be critical of the new surrounding. They would simply think it was something new to acclimate to. Z didn't mind judging because no one was there to stop her opinion, and half the time she didn't feel like communicating her disgruntled thoughts to the people who saw her judgmental gaze. What did she care if others 'knew' she was actively despising their way of life?

She took in her surroundings, the rolling fields of produce and the out-of-control weeds invading the entirety of the space. Fus’quashi e'chuta. (Such stupid s**t.) she muttered as she bent down to yank the first handful of weeds out. The shadow hunter disliked the fact she had to leave the school to go on missions, let alone come to find that the surrounding city couldn't even work well with nature enough to avoid, or at least reduce, things like weeds. They were stubborn and hearty, sure, but there were bound to be surefire ways to prevent them, along with the pesky pests that crawled about. She honestly couldn't remember pulling weeds that often where she lived, but then, she also didn't have potentially unsustainable farming land. Everything was small so as not to severely impact the loving forest they lived in.

Z got down on her knees and started pulling, making sure the roots of the plant came with it. Last thing she wanted was for it to grow back into something even less manageable-then they could easily blame her for the situation and worse circumstances. All she wanted was to get along well enough, learn what she needed, and go back home. Her tribesmen needed her...They needed to push back the infiltrators and get them off the land that was rightfully theirs. The greed of a faction. If it weren't enough her former village was in ruins. Relax, Zulmag'jin will protect the tribe...jang bebe chaadi (protect baby brother), Ran'fi. I do miss him so...

She stopped for a moment, and Lydia hissed, poking at her sides with her legs. Lighten up, wassa'fi (little love). Ran'fi will grow big and show you how strong he is. Just the thought of him growing up had Z near tearing up. The last time she saw him, he was holding his first hatchet-the one she had given him. He was so small...Just barely walking straight with a little hunch. She shook her head and went back to pulling the weeds, thoughts of her loved ones leading her far away from the reality she was living.

ARYN RAIDEN

Wind rushed through the griffin's feathers, stirring up Aryn's adrenaline the longer he flew. A knowledgeable biologist would argue his species was not built for long-distance flight, but Aryn disagreed.

Ever since he was a kid, he spent hours just gliding around, flying as far and as long as he could - no matter the strain - just to feel the rush of weightlessness being off the ground, the enjoyment of watching his shadow followed him along the ground when he swooped and veered. His stubbornness paid off, too, as he'd grown an endurance for flight that unrivaled to any other griffin he knew of.

The city of farms came into view. He glided above the flatlands, counting the fields until his eagle-eyes picked out a figure standing alone among the weeds and vegetables. Tall and slender with brilliant gold head of hair gleaming in the sun, it was impossible not to spot them and he continued his flight towards their six o' clock, watching as the person from behind, watching as the figure bent and began pulling at the ground.

He was sure this was the section he was assigned to take care of. Was this a farmer or did someone else sign up for this mission too after all? Hope this doesn't mean I have to split the pay.... Been dying for potato waffles lately and I sure as hell am not trusting the Amaterasu markets again.

He swooped over the person - a woman? - and shot towards the ground, claws and paws skidding up some of the dirt as he flared his wings out and came to a halt. He flapped twice for good measure and shook his head before folding his wings in on his back and sides.

"Woo, it's a helluva lot hotter down here than up there, I'll tell you that much. This is going to be a pain in the a**, huh?" he said, his voice being projected outward into the mind of the... He narrowed his eyes at the other person for a moment. The person had feminine features - a slender face, body, and round eyes - but the intimidating height, severe expression, large fangs, and overall toughness laying over their every being was just enough to throw his judgement off. Long pointed ears, bright hair, and off-colored skin didn't help in identifying even what they were. Not an elf- not with those fangs. Greyish skin... Hm.

"Okay, don't take this the wrong way, but you are a female, right? I mean, you look like a girl, but pretty sure I haven't met a whatever-you-are before and I don't want to get on the wrong foot with someone by referring to them as the wrong gender again."

He froze for a moment when his eyes fell to her waist, and he lowered his head. "Also, don't panic, but there's a huge a** spider crawling up your side. Hold still." He took a couple steps forward, thinking to swipe the sucker off with one of his front claws.

tab It had been quite some time, picking one weed bunch by one weed bunch at a time. It wasn't tiring, rather, tiresome. The land didn't cover her back and body as she was used to. It left her exposed and out in the open to be attacked and taken to opposing tri- They are 'civilized'… or so they say. You don't live in the Highlands anymore. She thought with a sigh. Lydia kept prodding with her spindly legs at her sides, jabbing harder and harder each time. Z cackled softly, a harsh sound most would hate to hear. But she loved it-normally loud and sharp, drawing out for a few seconds at the end. Ran'fi will not forget you, wassa'fi. He will recall the hatchet, he will recall your golden. You need to focus, so you can get back to him. Z shrugged and slightly shook her head, playfully swatting Lydia with a bunch of weeds. Lydia understood her intentions, and Z understood her companion's all the same; they had been together and inseparable for well over ten years now. She could even recall the moment she held Lydia as a hatchling in her hands. The sweet orchid creature had been so small…now look at her. She had grown magnificently. Lok'dim'fi… Obeah. Yuutee atuad e jang chaadi'fi. (Little darling… Thank you. May the Spirits bless and protect my little brother.) Z set down the handful of weeds to gently stroke the underside of her abdomen, a tuskful smile accompanied. She was right, after all. She would see Ran'fi again and he would surely remember her.

The troll bristled at the loud sounds of the earth been upended and she turned to see what it was. Her eyes widened as her smile had become more sinister. It looked to be a griffin-one of the creatures of her forest that she used for transportation. Granted, she didn't need much transportation in these Loa-forsaken cities. To Naraka with the mechanized, robotic life of the human cities! And what is it doing here anyways? She questioned thoughtfully before being assaulted with some voice in her head. Z visibly flinched and took a step backward, pushing back on Lydia's legs. It rang loudly in the language she despised most, the language she wish would cease to exist...The language she knew was part of the downfall of her people. Common speak-she was sick to her stomach of the humans ruling the earth with their disgusting phrases and pronunciations. To Naraka with the faction and this stupid griffin for being the probable cause of the ugly language in her head.

Wassa…What is happening to you? Z stood up straight and turned to look the thing in its eyes. Da murka quashi. (That foolish idiotic creature.) She whispered, shifting her body to stand in front of her companion. The Loa tamer knew better than to believe that the Spirits were speaking to her in that manner, and frankly, the griffin could be the only suspect. She understood perfectly well that druids-shapeshifters, some call them- existed. She had seen them…and they were beautiful. But none had ever turned into the half-eagle, half-lion creature that was standing before her. More importantly, they never had those colorings. Only the ones in the ******** mountains of the dwarves.

Z pulled away, her face cringing and crinkling tightly, her deep-set hatred boiling her blood quickly. It was questioning her gender, confused by her race. It wasn't like this hideous place had such beautiful creatures as she. She was a rarity-so for it to expect to find one of her kind, more particularly her, around these parts of the world was somewhat insulting, even if unintentionally. She reached behind her and held onto a couple of Lydia's legs, pulling her up to start backtracking away from this griffin. She had to get away from it. She didn't understand why it chose to land right where she was, nor did she understand why it decided to target her, but she wanted to get away from it. Time slowed for a moment as the last phrase sunk into her brain, processing the value of the common speak and rewording it in her own language. Lok'dim… sul. (Beloved…strike.) She commanded and dashed out right, her long strides taking her right to her weapons laying down beneath the crops.

In the meantime, Lydia shuffled quickly left, hissing and shooting webs at the griffin's head. She laced the last one with her poison, spitting it out as the webs passed under her fangs. Z notched an arrow, aiming for the griffin's heart. Alarion Loa, sul i jang fu. (Guardian Loa, attack and protect us.) From all the shadows of their beings, spirits began to sprout and rise in the shapes of panthers and serpents, the deceased ancestors of her people rising once more from the dead. Shadows gathered and crept from her hands along the shaft to the arrowhead attached. Z took a breathe and kept her eyes on the target before sending the weapon whistling through the air at the single thing keeping it alive.

ARYN RAIDEN

Aryn heard the woman whisper under her breath as he approached, although the words were completely unfamiliar to him. Her tone was rough, but the words sounded pretty cool.

He brushed the thought aside for now, focusing on the spider. Instead of doing as told - or perhaps because of a language barrier - the woman suddenly dashed to one side, the spider jumping off of her towards the other. A hiss unlike anything he'd ever heard from a bug reached his ears before the spider began shooting it's sticky webs with an amazing accuracy. The first one hit him straight in the face, he was so unprepared for it.

Argh! What kind of bug does something like
that?

He instinctively began trying to claw the stringy, sticky, gum-like stuff away from his eyes At the sound of another web shooting out of the arachnid's spinnerets, however, he forewent his clawing and immediately leaped to the side. Keeping his front claws mostly off the ground and spreading his wings slightly for balance, he relied on his strong back legs to leap away again and again at each attack of the web, taking note of the spider's range and speed and jumping further and further back.

"A little help with that bow would be- whoa! The hell, lady?!"

He caught sight of a black swirl of energy from the corner of his before looking just in time to leap around the enchanted arrow's trajectory. It grazed across his chest, feathery fluff flying off where it swooped by. The resulting cut erupted into a burning, sickening pain, as if the arrow had been lit with a cursed fire.

Holy hell, that actually hurts. This lady means business. Aryn thought, stumbling once from the wound before abandoning the spider entirely and bounding towards the woman. The familiar thrill of adrenaline coursed through him in a reaction to the injury, and if he had been in human form. Finally someone interesting who knows how to fight. Too bad they were supposed to be working together.

He closed the gap fast, so she wouldn't have time to do whatever the hell she did to her arrow again, and swiped at her bow with one clawed hand to disarm her.

tab Z felt content in the moment that the plan had worked. The moronic creature was highly confused by what was going on, probably unsuspecting that she had any control of a monster like her orchid arachnid. No one ever really expected Lydia to be of any use, either. They always kind of just looked at her as something that followed her around like a puppy dog. But her people weren't ones who allowed highly intelligent creatures’ talent go to waste in favor of some useless pet. No, no. What an insult to the creations of Mother Nature, the Loa, and Shadra, her God. Instead, they spent just as long training them as they did with the trolls. Days and nights. Practice and more practice. All of it to get them to adapt to their master's calls and fighting styles, constantly learn to change procedure when the situation changed, and learn new commands and new responses...It was tough, but the chieftains and the doctors were demanding and expected those of the tribe to defend the home they had created for all who lived there.

The griffin clawed at its face, trying to get the nasty webs off-of course, to no avail in time for the second round. Unfortunately, it was smart enough to get up on its hind legs and begin retreating, hopping backwards like a crippled raptor. Z would have laughed if the thing hadn't called out to her in her head again. She cringed again, faltering in step and breathe. It had decided that she was female. Well, at least it had a grasp on anatomy… <******** thing! Shut up!

She shook her head, the invasion of private space making her wholly uncomfortable. If the thing was in her head...what else could it do? Anything but speak forsaken common speak...please just stop! Thankfully, her attention was brought away by the quiet tear of the arrow singing in conjunction with the griffin's feathery body. Her mark was hit- but it wasn't good enough. The thing hadn't cried out in pain, nor did it seem to faze it. Instead, it chose to ignore Lydia and come running after her. She whistled for Lydia to come along. Fu d'zana, qa fu toje ja'da. (It has some tusks, but it's still stupid.) she muttered to herself. She didn't have much time to think as it came up to swipe at her. Z held up her arm over her head, catching the claws with her left as she dropped her bow with her right for the kopis at her belt.

She grunted and bit her tongue, displeased by the power and sheer strength of the beast as brown blood beaded and began pooling on her skin. She held her ground- she wasn't stupid enough to let it think it was so great. She stabbed upward toward the wound she had already made, calling out to her walking shadow spirits. Alarion Loa. Lasuam. (Guardian Loa. Consume.) Her commands were like spells- alluring and compelling. The shadows were quick to follow orders, the panthers taking off in a sprint to their target, the serpents slithering ever faster to strike. Her ancestors were slower as they were harder to control, but soon enough they all caught up and pounced as one onto the griffin that was standing over her. The shadows dissipated in the fluffy feathers of the creature, becoming nothing. It was almost as if they hadn't existed. Rak'tsha ackee niqwai? (Feeling fiery within?) She questioned mockingly, shuffling to the side to get out from its shadows.

ARYN RAIDEN

Aryn sooner expected her to jump back than actually meet his attack head on, but the tall as hell women blocked his swipe with her left arm. She dropped her bow, as Aryn had initially intended, but replaced it with a large, curved dagger from her belt. His right claw dug into her arm as he began pushing his full weight onto her to force her down. As she stabbed upwards toward his arrow wound, his other claw caught her dagger around the blade and held it tight, his thick scales protecting his palm from injury.

Before he could her surrender lest she be crushed by 530lbs of fluffy griffin, she spoke a few short words in her unknown language again and more shadows began forming around them, taking the shape of animals charging in to strike. He released the arm the woman had used to block but managed to jerked the dagger away from her other hand just as the shadows reached him.

The shadows felt like fire seeping into his skin and Aryn collapsed into a crouch on all fours at the sheer intensity of the sudden wave of burning pain plaguing his furry body.

"Damn hell... I see... you're serious... No more warnings."

Aryn forced himself to stand straighter, the unbelievable agony weighing him down and slowing his movements until he took a deep breath and screeched at the top of his lungs, voicing his pain in a mighty war cry. The adrenaline kicked in as he focused his mind on nothing but attacking the woman in front of him and he charged forth, lowering his head towards the woman's torso. The lingering burn throughout his body only motivated him to put more strength into his headbutt as he approached, convinced that whacking the s**t out of her could dispel the freaky magic attacking his innards.

tab Z began to backpedal, glancing over briefly to find where Lydia had gone. She needed her companion here to help her subdue the damn thing. For some reason, it just kept fighting with her-she was hoping at some point it would surrender, give up, or otherwise limp away pathetically. Unfortunately, it didn't seem so inclined to do so. It made her wonder whether the griffin was just ballsy or if it was plain stupid. She would kill it sooner or later...or at least, she hoped. Despite this desire to see its head off its body, she felt this strange need to keep it alive and domesticate it. It would make it so that she didn't have to use other means of transportation, and considering the fact it somewhat snuck up on her, she presumed it to be very quick. She would have to train it to endure longer rides, especially if she wanted to take it back to her home. Whether it was welcomed in the forest or not was something she was unsure of. Normally griffins of those colorings were creatures her tribe chose to kill for the feathers, claws, meat, blood...and they were normally weapons for the common speakers in the Highlands-even more reason for it to be dead. Something feels different about this one, though...And it can talk. she thought.

She licked her lips when it crouched to the floor, and she could tell that it was forcing itself to not writhe in agony. Her spirits weren't meant to make it feel like rainbows and sunshine. Hell no. They were made to make him feel hopeless and miserable in darkness and shadow, hatred and fury that had yet to be expressed by the creatures and ancestors alike. As she basked in the glorious pain it was in, it spoke to her. "Damn hell... I see... you're serious... No more warnings." What did it mean? The whole fight was started when the griffin implied its desire to kill her Lydia! No one was going to touch her companion-that was the rule. But what did it know of her rules? It hadn't ever even seen her race before, let alone understand how sacred spiders were to her tribe.

Lok'dim'fi- shada naowa. (Little darling- webs, now.) Lydia followed commands and kept up her quick creep as she shot webs from her spinnerets. She aimed for its fast-moving claws that bound across the synthetic soil. Z didn't have much time to think before it crashing into her abdomen, taking all the breathe out of her chest. The world blacked out a moment before her body woke up and kicked into overdrive. It's not playing, any longer. The witch doctor found the strength to push herself up and off the thing, her body hitting the ground with an uncomfortable thump. She rolled a few feet and took just a moment to push herself up off the floor. Yudona jillik! <******** rat!) She spat angrily, reaching to her belt for her last set of weapons: her hatchets.

With blood smeared and dripping profusely down her arm onto the earth below, Z held her ground, weapons slightly below chest height. She signaled for Lydia to come by her side. The spider didn't hesitate a moment to skitter across the land over to her master, hissing to comfort her. The troll's chest was heaving from the battle, the mental wear on her slow and weak. She had strategized and fought for hours upon hours back in her land, why would one griffin take her down? Her eyes met the griffin's, trying to make sense of why it was fighting her. Survival. she reasoned, disgruntled.

We must kill it. The spider warned in a series of guttural sibilations. Her spindly legs shifting, the arachnid unnerved by the strong, feathery creature. Some level of compassion and respect for nature overwhelmed her anger, stifling her primal need to finish it off. She often did think and act in rash manners, but this time she chose to control herself to see where it took her. Dinde, lok'dim. Alarion Loa, laraeda. (No, dearest. Guardian Loa, relinquish.) The spirits had entered without permissions and left on command, bursting from the winged creature toward the shadows of the trees. They were consumed and vanished, leaving just the three of them again. Z weighed her options - she could befriend the creature and try to tame it, she could kill it as Lydia proposed and attempt to use all parts of the carcass, or she could flee and feel utterly ashamed of not having stood up to the thing that decided to target her beloved companion.

The first seemed the easiest, the last being something she simply couldn't bring herself to do. She was from a very proud tribe of trolls who bragged of bravery in times of hardship and peril. She was told never to back down from a fight unless there was no way to win - and even then, her kind had a hard time walking away.What...do you seek? She asked, the rasp in her voice emphasized by the broken attempt to speak the common language. Why do...you plague...myself?She questioned further, ignoring the scratching and prodding of her spider. If the damn thing couldn't understand her, at least she tried. She already was doing something she hated- giving in to find compromise and peace with something that probably didn't look at her so respectfully.

Aryn's head met the woman's torso with a satisfying whack and she flew back as he began to slow his charge. The pain thrumming horribly inside his chest momentarily dimmed by his victory hit.

Ha! Take that, you- ah!

All four four of his feet suddenly became entangled in web from the damn spider and he tripped, landing spectacularly in the dirt. His chest heaved at all of the exertion from the pain and charge and now fall, and he laid still for a moment to gather himself before turning on his side and struggling to undo the webs around his feet. He had to work first, before the spider or the woman would recover. However, the burning sensation began creeping up on him as the adrenaline subsided, overwhelming his senses again and slowing his movements.

s**t, s**t, s**t... come on...

His head tilted to see that the woman had gotten up already and now drew near, some wicked looking hatchets in both hands.

Well, world... it was fun...
he thought, although he didn't give up clawing through the webs. He'd go down fighting to the last breath. No giving up - no regrets.

But instead of striking him down, she spoke in that eerie foreign language again. Suddenly the blackness that had infiltrated his body poured out of him again, the near unbearable pain leaving with it. Aryn took a huge breath in relief at the missing agony. The cut on his chest still stung but it was nothing compared to what the shadows had made him experience.

He stopped struggling for a moment, rolling over on his belly again too look up at her confused. Was she tired? Or did his almighty headbutt knock some sense into her?

She stared back and spoke brokenly in English. Aryn tilted his head, listening carefully as he worked to recognize the words beneath the heavy accent.

So it was a language barrier problem... He thought, glancing at the spider near her. That thing must be her pet or something. Oh, jeez... He shook his head and looked at the woman again.

"Okay, so I see what went wrong here... I didn't realize that bigass spider was your friend. I'm sorry for trying to squish it, so let's stop trying to kill each other for now, okay? I'm from Amaterasu Academy. I was hired to pull weeds in this field. Are you a farmer or are you from an academy too?"

tab The troll hissed, irritating as she waited for the griffin to finally pay attention to her. Lydia had done as she had asked - she had entangled the thing. It was a good idea to get the feet, so as to immobilize it, especially considering Lydia had particularly thick and strong webbing. Her breed was a wonder, and Z could only thank Shadra every day that she had the sweet hatchling bestowed to her. If the griffin hadn't posed a potential transportation unit, she would have been more inclined to actually kill it. It was so dumb, it seemed... Survival instincts only do one so much good. Big birds cannot think as trolls can.

After her shadows exited its body, it seemingly was able to breathe as it gasped. She could only imagine her ancestors were doing the choking...They were angry and vengeful spirits. Some managed to move to the other worlds, some remained behind. She didn't mind some stayed- they were better used here than in some afterlife wasteland.

Then it seemed as though the bird-brain finally registered her words, looking up to her. It seemed thoroughly confused that she had finally spoken the common language it seemingly only knew. It managed to look to her spider, and she moved to step in front of Lydia again as she had before. Why was this stupid thing still eyeing her kindred spirit?! They had just had a small fight over the precise thing and it still wanted to target her? Yudona murka... <******** idiot creature...) she muttered under her breath, raising her eyebrow in challenge.

She grunted in disdain when it spoke to her again in her head, flinching more visibly than before. Was there no other goddamn way for this thing to communicate with her? Her long, slender ears twitched ever so slightly when it mentioned her spider - only to assure her that it finally ******** understood that the spider, her Lydia, was part of her being. Yes, stupid thing, yes. Why did it take so damn long for the griffin to figure this out? It then apologized for it's actions and she nodded slightly, still eyeing it warily.

Z scoffed and laughed when it mentioned the school that she was attending. She took a good few seconds to laugh it all off before shaking her head. A...farmer? Got be...playing a joke. She found herself laughing harder when she said it. Loa, her? A farmer? I be...one with nature. Her words came out slow, her extremely heavy Jamaican accent making it harder for the thing to understand her sentences and words. She grew tired of trying to think how to say what she meant, however. She wasn't going to speak like a comensha if she didn't have to.

She turned her back on the thing and went back to the patch where her bow and kopis were, grabbing it up before heading over to where her weeds were. Lydia followed her master's vibrations, paying close attention to whether the beast came after them again or not. Ja'da fu. (That creature ain't the smartest in the armory.) she mumbled to herself, somewhat disgusted that she looked like a goddamn farmer to the moronic feathered thing. Z proceeded to drop down on her knees, putting her weapons back on her person, before beginning to pull weeds once more. She hoped the griffin would mind its own business and do what it came here to do.

User Image Aryn winced the crazy woman began laughing at his comment, her laughter painfully loud to his lion ears. The laugh itself reminded him of a villain's laugh from a kids movie, but she soon stopped to explain. She seemed to really struggle with the language and immediately turned her back on him after her short comment.

"One with nature... What are you, a monk or something? That didn't even answer my question. Hey! One With Nature! Get back here!"

He tried to stand up again before falling over because of the web still wrapped around his legs. After wiggling around for a minute, he managed to finally slice himself free with his talons and claws. He stood up, a little light headed still from the earlier agony the lady's magic put him through, but soon walked up to her. Sticky pieces of web still clung to his feet. Although it bothered the hell out of him, there was little he could do about it until later. While he paid little attention to the spider now, he vowed to squish it - regardless of the giant woman's wrath - if it covered him in any more sticky crap.

The woman herself was crouched over the earth, pulling weeds out of the ground just as he was supposed to. He plopped down a couple feet from her. This woman was strong and could very well kill him again, but he refused to let that give her the right to ignore him.

"If you're not a farmer, are you from Amaterasu?" he asked, as he tilted his head downward to inspect the arrow wound she had given him. The fluffy white feathers surrounding the gash were already caked in dried blood and he gently began rearranging them so he could see the wound better. He continued talking incessantly into the woman's head as he inspected himself.

"What was that magic you used on me? It hurt like hell. Care to share your name? What are you anyway? What do you call your native language? I want to look it up. Where are you from, Jamaica? Never been there before. What made you leave? How do you train a spider to fight? Do you make your own equipment? What..."
